does anyone have skills to make a flash app for local maps lets say
make the flash app to use the map files saved from google as images of the local area or whichever area you need
for example sequentually numbered map images from left to right in rows for reference so i can upload my own area maps
if i had any knowledge of flash id probably make it but i dont...
Note from Admin: Chrieg has made a tutorial on the 3rd page - I'm putting it here in the first post so it is easier for all to see.
How to use flashmaps
First off you need the right firmware. According to fishfutters tests, the versions 3.53 and 2.53 (including beta versions) work.
To use the flashmaps-app you have to organize all the needed files on your D2 in a specific manner:
In the folder named "FLASH", create a subfolder for every map you want to use. The names of these folders don't matter. You can name them after the maps they contain. Now in EACH of these folders you need two things:
1) The actual app ("flashmaps_1.0.swf"). you can rename this file too, to match the name of the map it belongs to.
2) another folder called "map". (this name can not be changed)
the "map"-folder again contains the following:
1) The JPEG-images the map is composed of. They are named consecutively. (e.g. "map1.jpg", "map2.jpg", "map3.jpg"...).
2) the "mapconfig.txt"-file. This file contains some specific details regarding the respective map. (width, height and the starting point of the numeration; for more details on this see the instructions for creating a map).
If you have all your files in place you can view your maps by opening the corresponding swf-file under "Utilities"->"Flash Player" on your D2.
How to create a map
Creating your own maps for the flashmaps-app is very easy and doesn't require any specific knowledge or commercial software!
First you have to find an image of the map you want. The image can be as large as you want! It will just eat up a little more space on your player but the performance always stays the same. That's the actual point of the app.
If you have found your image you need to split it up into pieces of 160 pixels in width and 120 pixels in height. The pieces that will remain at the right and bottom border probably won't have these exact dimensions but that doesn't matter. The resulting files have to be in JPEG format. The file name has to consist of the word "map" and a consecutive number. The numbering doesn't have to start at any specific point but you have to specify where it starts (more on that later). The app will arrange the tiles according to their numbers like this:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
There are several ways to split your image up. One possibility of course is using the slice-tool in photoshop. I won't explain this method here though because I havent figured out the easiest way to do it and I guess not everyone here has a copy of photoshop.
Instead I found a freeware-program which is just perfect for this task. It really doesn't get any easier than that.
The program is called "Splitimage" and you can get it here (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/castlesplit.html). After installing it you can import your map-image by clicking "File"-->"New...". To specify the grid pattern go to "Edit"-->"Edit using Dialog...". On the window that opens, open the "Processor"-tab and select "Create Columns and Rows of Specific Size". Enter 160 for "Column Width" and 120 for "Row Height", then hit OK.
Before saving the images we just have to check some settings: go to "File"-->"Preferences" and ensure that the field for "File Name and Number Separator" is empty and that "Use Numbers (1,2,3...)" as well as "JPEG File (JPG)" is selected. Then hit ok.
Now we can create the files: go to "File"-->"Generate Images...". Enter "map" as filename and save. That's it.
Now you just have to create the "mapconfig.txt"-file. It contains some details about the map, which the app needs to display it correctly. You can use the sample I included in the download of the app and adjust the values for your map.
The contents of the file look something like this:
&rows=12&cols=8&startat=1
It defines three parameters: "rows", "cols", and "startat" and assigns a number to each one. Replace the value for "rows" with the number of rows your map contains of. "cols" stands for the number of columns. The "startat"-parameter specifies where your enumeration starts. If you use "Splitimage" your first tile will probably be named "map1.jpg". That means the value for "startat" is 1.
When you've done all that you just have to arrange all the files as described in the "How to use"-instructions and you're ready to go.
And don't forget to share your maps here (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19180)! [smile]
Cheers!

D2 supports *.jpg images ;)

what i meant is a flash file to organize and navigate those jpg images
like for example i save maps on my pc for my area in numerical order or whatever.
for example to move north south east west with onscreen arrows, to select the area
zoom in zoom out ( d2 only has like fit screen,50% and 100% which is not much use for maps
(applies to all topics)
please read the questions carefuly before ansvering
Reading a map on a DAP while driving is very dangerous >.>
But it would be pretty handy for those traveling days...but you know, the D2 isn't a GPS device, so even if it was possible, you'd have to load new app after app to get other directions updated. We're talking more than a million possible locations, and that's just too much to ask (but still a dream-come-true if google somehow supported DAP flash maps!).

You get directions and everything even though it's not GPS.

ok ill try again loli dont think i explained it clearly
have any of u used paper maps numbered like 2456,2467.. north is 2556 south is 2356 east is 2256 or whatever
they have them for each area
thats what im tryin to copy is instead of that paper map i can save images from google maps onto my D2 sequences like that all i would need the flash app to do is give me more flexible zoom on those images and arrows on teh screen so i can move maps up down left and right
i dont need a gps for that
kinda like the grid map
http://docs.gimp.org/images/filters/examples/render-taj-grid.jpg
Raver,
The point is, none of us have heard of such an application. It would be fun to look at one.
I think Zverik's point was that you can use your D2 right now without a custom application by saving consecutive screenshots as .jpg images and putting them in your picture folder. You can easily navigate left and right in picture view mode almost in the manner you describe; going up or down a row will be a little more cumbersome.
I've never been real happy with mapping applications on my Palm PDA. The screen was just too small to get the level of detail I wanted to see (street names) and yet have enough of the map on screen that I could stay oriented. I have really liked having a map (especially with GPS) on my laptop.
I don't think this is what you want, but you can try this out... http://board.cowon.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=PDS_FLASH&page=2&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=M&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=M&desc=asc&no=38&bmenu=M
hi
it looks like i had the same idea as you. some time ago i also thought that the d2 could be used for viewing maps but until today i was always too lazy to code it. as you have also noticed, the picture viewer of the d2 is useless for maps because of the insufficient zoom. i first tried making a simple flash app that would load any image and let you zoom it as much as you want. but it turned out that the d2 can't really cope with large images so that didn't work either.
the approach i used in the app i wrote this evening was splitting the map up into small parts just as you suggested.
so the thing i wrote may be what you are looking for. i just have to say that i wouldn't call it very user friendly (yet). maybe if some people are interested in it i can try to make some improvements.
when you open it up you start in the middle of the map. then you can just drag it around. there is no zoom feature (yet). the reason for this is that i split the map up so that the d2 would have to handle only small amounts of data at a time. now if the app would let you zoom out there would be much more pixels on the screen again which probably wouldn't work very well (also, it would have made it much more complicated for me to write it [biggrin]). a possible solution for this would be to save the map in different zoom factors since in this case storage space is perhaps less of a problem than performance.
the app also doesn't really work as smooth as i had hoped and sometimes the image flickers because it constantly loads the parts that are displayed at the moment and unloads all the others but i think it's still quite usable.
to use it with your own maps you are going to have to do some work in photoshop. you have to cut your maps up into pieces of 160x120px and save them as JPEG images in the "map"-folder (i strongly recommend the slice-tool!). the images have to be named "map1.jpg", "map2.jpg", "map3.jpg" and so on. the app will arrange them like this:
1 2 3
4 5 6
7 8 9
...
in the "map" folder there is also the "mapconfig.txt"-file in which you have to specify the number of rows and columns you map uses. i guess you can see by now what i meant with "not very user friendly" [smile].
anyway, here it is: http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~msteven/iaudiophile/map.zip
the sample files you find in there are the purpose i created this for. it is a map of public transportation in my hometown. (so if anyone of you want to bring me some beer you won't get lost [biggrin]).
i hope some of you can use it and as i already said, i'm open for suggestions.
cheers!

Wow, nice one! What tools did you use to make the small picture parts from the big picture? Is there any batch-like tool one could use?
i'm glad you like it. i used the slice-tool in photoshop to create the little images. but after you asked i did a quick google search and found this (http://www.snapfiles.com/get/castlesplit.html). it seems to be the perfect tool for the task (and it's free, yay!).
you can import your big image by clicking "file"-->"new"
besides creating the tiles it can also expand and crop your image, which is also useful in this context. click "edit"-->"crop/expand image..." to open the dialog box. in the "new base image"-box you can then enter the next bigger (or smaller, if you want to crop it) values for the width and height of your image that are divisible by the width and height of the tiles (160 and 120). this way you can ensure that the tiles at the right and bottom edge won't be smaller than the others. an alternative to this would be to scale the image but you'll need another program for that.
so when your image has the right size you can hit "edit"-->"edit using dialog" to create the rows and columns. on the "processor"-tab select "create columns and rows of specific size", enter 140 and 120 respectively, hit "ok" and there you go.
to create your files first go to "file"-->"preferences" and ensure that the "file name and number separator"-field is empty and that "use numbers" as well as "JPEG File" are selected. then hit ok.
then go to "file"-->"genarate images...", go to the folder where you want them, enter "map" as filename, click "save" and you'll get a perfect result.
i wish i had known this program yesterday! [biggrin]

but I made my first map and it works fine !

we should make a section for finished flash maps !!!
and a how to instruction manual ^^
don't rename them! i'll just make a quick change to the app. i think this way it makes more sense because most of the people will probably use this program and it would be kind of stupid if everybody would have to rename all the images. a map section sounds like a good idea! although there may be some copyright issues concerning the maps. i think we'll just let the mods decide that...
and of course i can write a step-by-step manual on how to use it.

Thanks to "Chrieg" who coded a nice Flash Map tool, we can now use the D2 as a map and navigate easier.
He will write a nice little step-by-step manual on how to make flash maps.
Hope many people join us to make some maps of cool places, citys or even whole countries !
Example:
Map of Germany
Link: http://timreinhart.kilu.de/Cowon%20D2/Flash%20Maps/Germany.rar
http://timreinhart.kilu.de/Cowon%20D2/Flash%20Maps/flash%20window%20ger.jpg http://timreinhart.kilu.de/Cowon%20D2/Flash%20Maps/ger%20s.jpg
Can i ask for maps here? Then I would ask for a Norwegian map.
I put the two folders of the maps (USA and Germany) in the FLASH folder on my D2, but when i open the .swf file of the maps, all i get is white screen.
did i miss something?

Please do not ask questions in the finished flash maps thread.
Many thanks,

sorry Fishfutter for letting you wait for the fix. i also made some other improvements and it actually took me the whole day! but i think it paid out.
I proudly announce:
flashmaps v1.0 (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~msteven/iaudiophile/flashmaps_1.0.zip) is here!
the new features are:
-scrolling buttons: you can scroll through large maps without having to drag all the time. they also work much smoother than the dragging.
-the starting point of the numeration of the images can be specified in the mapconfig.txt-file by using the "startat"-parameter. so now the first image can be named "map0.jpg", "map1.jpg", "map314159.jpg" or whatever you like...
-the images at the right and bottom edge don't have to be 160x120px anymore. that means that when you're creating a map you don't have to worry about its resolution and don't have to resize/crop/expand it.
-optimized loading: the tiles are loaded faster and the image doesn't flicker anymore.
enjoy.
(instructions on using the app and creating maps will follow shortly)

hi
did you use the swf-files that were included with these maps or did you use the new version 1.0?
if you used flashmaps_1.0.swf the reason may be that the mapconfig-files of these maps don't have the "startat"-parameter. add "&startat=1" and try if it works.
however if you used the swf-files that were included i don't really have an idea what the problem may be. I tried them on my player and they worked.
i just made some changes to the app so that if there is no value for "startat" it is 1 by default. this way the maps that were already made should work with the new version too.
you can just download the file again and try if that works.
Hello!
My flashmaps seems to work only if i chose to point with the following pointer pin when i start the map.sfw file, works not if i chose to point on it with my fingers?
i have fw 3.53

I got even a white screen in mine browser with flashmaps 1.0 with the original images!
I think there is a problem with flashmaps 1.0.
That's really weird. I just downloaded it in order to check whether the file on the server is ok and it worked fine. Are you sure all the files and folders are in the right place? (I'm sorry to ask but I just can't imagine what else it could be).
Does anybody else have these problems (with either version)? [confused]

To Chrieg:
I have translate and post your tutorial on a french forum.
Le Tutoriel de Chrieg, entièrement traduit est ici. (http://dencowon.fr/forum/post1942.html#1942)
I just have to precise:
- Flash maps do not work on my D2 with fw 3.53b but work fine with fw 3.53.
- Splitimage name my files in beguining by "map0". I tried to just give "0" as the "startat" value but it did not work.
So I had to rename them with a batch with ACDsee. But I know than a lot of freewares can do that too.
- Flash maps can be used as a "Flash comics".
So congratulation for your 100% freewares method !

Rigobert, for re-doing the London underground you have my thanks; was going to re-do it myself but you've saved me the trouble. [cool]
My excuse is that I was very drunk when I made it and it ended up being far too magnified. [laugh]

I think there was a problem with the cache in Firefox, because now flashmaps 1.0 is working fine. (after a reboot of mine laptop)
It's even working fine on mine D2, after changing the "startat" in the mapconfig file. :-)

This app is WONDERFUL [thumbsup][thumbsup][thumbsup] !!Thanks for creating it! it's very useful!
I'm sure i'm not the first to think of this, but i'm also using it with screenshots of webpages, mainly wikipedia, and reading them on my d2. it's a little extra scrolling but its pretty easy to read, plus you get the pictures you wouldn't normally get with the text reader.
Thanks again for the WONDERFUL flash app!!![thumbsup][thumbsup]

I know it's been said that maps only work with .53 firmwares, but has anyone actually tried a map in 2.51?

Is it possible to implement to zoom a Flashmap like a normal picture?

in theory it is possible but the image is already displayed at 1:1 and you would need a zoom out funktion ^^

Come on Fish... your are one of our stars in design... why don't you deal with Flash stuff to convert some of your excellent flash skins like Clix for instance to this GOM Flash (http://board.cowon.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=PDS_FLASH&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=M&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=M&desc=asc&no=95&bmenu=M) which seems to be the only capable of show cover art in all the ways. I mean no change of size, reading from flash memory or SD card.
I would like to have your Click One - black instead of that GOM design in that base. [biggrin]
Sorry for be so demanding [rolleyes]
EDIT... This don't belong here... sorry so much moved to flash UI thread

Hi!
I've played around wit the flashmaps. What confused me was the &startat parameter. I thought this describes the startposition of the image first displayed but instead it describes the first number of the enumeration a map begins with. What's about a parameter like &displayfirst=x where x is the map that first displayed when you open the swf?
I think that would be an additional nice feature?!

I think that's a good idea! I can easily implement this in the next version.
about the zoom: i agree that it would be quite useful to have a zoom-function in order to zoom out and get a better overview. it's just that this would require very big changes to the way the whole thing works so maybe i will implement this some time but it's probably going to take a while.
so for me, only fw 2.35 worked (the beta 2.35b didn't)
and after updating to fw 2.35 i hade some withe-screen's -> now all works like a charm :-)

It is difficult to find the good size for a map:
- Too big, it is difficult to find a way
- Too small, it is not legible. (I think that I made it a little too small).
And the second problem is that its remains nets by resizing the card.
So this tool is unteresting, but not as powerfull as a complete viewer with displacements and zoom tools.
A2, A3 & Q5 are more appropried to read a map or a comic on is PMP .
So I think it could be a good idea, to publish the completes maps (in one file) on those players forums !

yes, 3.53b doesn't work. Rigobert already found that out. You need 2.53 or 3.53 final.
Is there a similar Korean forum with Korean maps? That would be pretty neat. I know the Seoul subway system can get confusing.

when i edit mapconfig.txt with a linux text editor, i tried gedit and vim, it doesn't work (white screen with arrows). but it does work with the windows editor notepad it works well.
the vim-file is one byte larger than the notepad-file and ends with 0x0a
other than that a great application! very usefull!
if you're using linux, imagemagick is very very handy for splitting images from command line:
convert map.png -gravity NorthWest -crop 160x120 map%d.jpg
you can use it for almost every input image format, i think it also works with a pdf file

there is a program called Google Maps Downloader (http://www.cnet.de/downloads/0,10000011,273r-78239s,00.htm) but it's shareware and the trial version has a limit to the zoom factor. However, I figured out another way to do it. Have a look (http://www.metacafe.com/watch/1073912/).

ahhhhhm...I kinda ran into a little problem with the maps ?!?!?!?!
the D2 seems to have problems handeling all the images (not the flash application) as the database kinda not supports that many files. I had a few maps with 1000+ images and combine that with a 16GB SDHC card and the D2 can't handle all the files !
So I can only have that many flash maps on my player at a time ^^

Oh no! I totally forgot about the file limit because it has never been a problem for me. Is it correct that you can only have 3000 files on the internal storage? That would be a real problem. My map of Zurich alone consists of more than 2000 files and I would actually like to have some other maps and some music too ^^.
The reason I made the tiles only 160x120 pixels is to get a better performance but now that I know this I'm probably going to test the application with larger files. If it can handle images that are 320x240 that would divide the number of files per map by 4. I think that would quite help.
when i try to split image with "the castle" is shows an error massage.. "not enough storage available for this command".. my image size is around 10000x6000 pixel.. i am using a crappy pc.. is this the problem of my pc??
Fishfutter

Hey Orionbrand, thanks for the nice world map! I really like it. I was just thinking about making one myself.
ok i'm on 2.54 now.
i just realised though that the resolution is so poor that only main roads are visible, is it possible to make street names visible too and increase the overall quality?
someone mentioned something about zooming in and larger file dimensions...can the .jpegs not be 320x240?

With flashmaps 1.0 there is no zoom function yet and the image tiles have to be 160x120. However, the resolution of the tiles doesn't have anything to to with the quality of the map. The only thing that matters is the size of the original image. This image will be displayed on the D2 1:1 (100%).
I'm working on a zoom function and I will also check if the tiles can be larger. But the purpose of larger tiles is just to reduce the overall number of files because of the file limit.
hmm i tried Horatius's google map of Braunschweig, Germany (http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=166983&postcount=17) and the resolution is a lot higher than the melbourne one you made fishfutter, it looks a lot closer in (1:1?).
the map is huge and a lot clearer, i can easily read the street names, this is what i'm after. any chance of a higher quality remake fishfutter, as well as making it 5000x5000 in total (if that is the maximum?)?
Fishfutter

well the maximum it only limited to my RAM memory ^^
and I wanted to buy some this week but I didn't get to the shops yet.

ok no problem, i can try if you tell me how to get the maps from google to jpegs on my PC, so i can open them in splitimage.
i got the map from google thanks to Chrieg's video tutorial, everything was going great. i hit Generate Images in SplitImage, only for the following error to come up when i tried to save...
"Not enough storage is available to process this command."
i assume this is the RAM problem, mentioned? i had the original map saved as .jpeg (17.8MB) 5000x5000 pixels, is that too large to process or is there some other reason? or a preference setting in SplitImage that needs changing, perhaps image compression?
what am i doing wrong? i have 2GB of RAM, is that not enough??
EDIT: just tried starting with a map of 4000x4000 pixels, now when i try to generate images SplitImage gives me an error saying "JPEG Error #36."

i got it to work, did you make sure that you click edit>edit using dialog...>processor>create columns and rows of specific size.
input 160 for width and 120 for height.
click ok.
generate images then worked on my 5000x5000 image.
my only problem now is i don't know what i'm meant to put in the mapconfig file?
how do i know how many rows and cols there are meant to be?
also how do i pinpoint the starting point?

If the first file is called map0.jpg the starting point is 0, if it's map1.jpg it's 1 etc.
You can see how many rows and columns there are in Splitimage. After entering 160 and 120 for width and height on the processor tab, click "Apply". Then switch to the "Edit Values"-tab. There you can see the number of rows and columns.
ok i entered the right numbers 42 rows and 42 columns for my 5000x5000 image, but all the images are positioned incorrectly, they're all there, but there not in the right places when viewing the .swf...
also i want my default location (home) to be the center of the google map, but when i go to take the screengrab and save, my pinpointed location is always in the top left hand corner near the zoom buttons...how can i make it so my home is center of the map after the screengrab?
shouldn't there be 32 columns instead of 42? (5000/160=31.25)
hmmm before it said 42 for each, now it says 34 for row heights and 25 for column widths. i'll try that.
EDIT: still jumbled up...wtf!
if the original image is exactly 5000x5000 it should be 42 rows and 32 columns
if the original image is exactly 5000x5000 it should be 42 rows and 32 columns
ok that worked.
does "startat=x" work? i have it set it to 96 (map96 is the little map where my location is pinpointed), i want it to start there, but it doesn't seem to.
The startat parameter doesn't define which tile will be displayed first but at which number the numbering of the tiles starts. You're not the first one to be confused by this. Sorry about that [smile]

02-05-2008, 14:34
in addition to the file-limit problem, it's taking quite a while for the player to start with so many files, so i made 480x360 images (i also had to modify the swf). that's reducing the number of map files by a factor of 9. now, my 4000x4000 pixels satellite photo of zurich has 99 instead of 850 pieces.
i'm not an expert on file systems, but i think that many small files will eat more space than larger files (especially on large disks), because the FAT filesystem is split into clusters: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluster_(file_system)
the disadvantage of larger images is, that scrolling is less fluent than before. but because i don't use my d2 primarily for navigation that's not too important for me. i also tried even larger images, but it took too long to load new images or the player simply crashed.
btw. thanks for the instructions how to save google maps, exactly what i was looking for!

Did you use Splitimage make the 480x360 tiles? It won't let me set column width or row height to more than 300.

Nice maps, i would love to have an map over Thailand for my vaccation!??
what is the limit that screengrab can capture? it doesn't work if i try 10000x10000.

The maximum resolution I could get was 10000x5000 or 50MP, I don't know if there is a limit or if my computer just can't handle more than that.
The max I can get with the Splitter tool is just 5000x5000.
has anyone actually confirmed whether the jpeg files in the map folder count towards the 3000 file limit on internal memory as well as actually stuffing up the database?
was just wondering because you can't actually view the map files anyway, not even via folders in picture mode or anything. as long as the map.swf itself displays properly and the rest of the files (videos and music) remain intact, that's all that matters.
i'll test out my theory later.
seems i was right.
i had my melbourne map which is made up of 1345 files, Horatius' German map, which is 1940 files (now already well over 3000)
plus what was already on my internal memory, 15 albums of music, 30 videos and some pictures (1595 files).
i tried everything, maps, music and videos. nothing was missing, everything worked like normal.
this leads me to believe my above theory is right that the "hidden" map files don't contribute to the overall file limit.
just to make absolutely sure, i'm about to try load on Chrieg's Zurich map - a further 2112 files in itself!
UPDATE: tested again with 3 maps this time, plus what was already on my D2.
Internal Memory: 5673 files, 37 folders, 2.01 GB Used, 5.59GB Free
database still intact, all files (including music, videos and pictures) working 100%, no lag or anything.
well that's good to know the maps can be a whole lot larger and made up of thousands more files, without having to worry about the file limit issue.
Nice job! Thanks a lot for testing that! That's one thing less to worry about. What firmware did you use?

When I had a lot of maps and my music and more on my D2 4GB + SDHC 8GB full with music I had a big problem.
By searching songs or navigating through the files and so on, there were no names shown. The place where should stand e.g. "artist - title.mp3" was empty.
And the foldernames were empty, too. Another bug was, every file and every folder was called "artist - title.mp3" ... verry funny.
I reflashed my firmware and deleted some maps - I won't need a map of Germany or Melbourne in the next few months ^^ - and now it works, but I have less than 3k or 5k files on my D2 or SD-Card.
i have a feeling it's because you guys have 4GB D2s

a map for vienna plsss :(
1. Anyone has a NYC subway map? :)
2. I loaded up a NYC map but it doesn't seem to work properly. Nothing happens when I click on the arrow. Not sure if it makes a difference but I'm using firmware version 2.54
Anyone? Mainly #2
Are you talking about Fishfutters NYC-map?
Do I understand you correctly that the map is being displayed but you cannot move it around?
Does it work if you test it on your PC and do other maps work on your D2?
I am using firmware v.3.54 so I don't know if there is a problem with 2.54. Anybody else?

What about the copyrights of the maps posted here?
Maps are just about the coolest thing ever on the D2 (I guess FLAC is pretty cool too =). Anyway, I'd like to put in a request for one or two nice Washington D.C. maps. I'd like a map of the D.C. transit system and one with landmarks, museums, etc... on it. If I could get one map with both transit and sites of interest that'd be great but I'm having trouble finding a map like that.
Thanks in advance
is there a possibility to run maps on 2.51 ?? its the best firmware and the only one which works with 16 gb cards.. pls help

First off, thanks for your hard work on this app Chrieg, it's really useful!
I have an idea that might make the zooming/navigation easier, and likely isn't too hard to implement either. If there was a single 320x240 image in the map directory called say index.jpg that was a completely zoomed out image representing the entire map, then that image could be used to quickly navigate around the entire map by toggling to it then just touching the point on the map that you wanted to go to.
Advantages would be:
- Much less need to scroll for miles to get from the starting point of the map to the area of interest.
- No need to zoom images in/out, instead you could just toggle between the tiled 100% view and the index.jpg view for quick navigation.
- The index.jpg image could be made to look a lot better than an automatically generated 320x240 image based on all the tiles (which would probably take ages too, or not even be feasible on the D2?).
Does that make sense? If not let me know and I'll explain in more detail. Or if you open source the application then maybe I can even help with the implementation :)
Hey guys. I'm sorry for letting you wait for so long. There were some problems that took me longer than expected. But now it's finally ready:
flashmaps v2.0 (http://people.ee.ethz.ch/~msteven/iaudiophile/flashmaps_2.0.zip)
There are basically two new features:
1. Zoom: You can now zoom out up to 35%. Of course more would always be better but that's pretty much the limit of what the d2 can handle. And after all, at 35% you can see 3x as much and I guess that's not all that bad.
2. I added the "displayfirst"-parameter that Ken Guru proposed. It's an additional optional parameter that defines which tile will be displayed when you start the app.
The contents of the mapconfig.txt might look something like this now:
&rows=48&cols=44&startat=0&displayfirst=2111
That would mean that the map in this example consists of 48 rows and 44 columns, the numbering of the image files starts at 0 and the image named "map2111" will be displayed first. As I said, startat and displayfirst are optional. If no valid value is given, startat will be set to 0 and the first image to be displayed will be the one right in the middle of the map.
This time I didn't include an example map with the download. There's only the SWF file. You can just copy it to your map folders and overwrite the old SWFs and add the displayfirst-parameter if you like.
@Snowman: I think I get your idea and I think it's brilliant! Of course this would mean a little more effort for the people making the maps but it would surely be worth it and of course it would also be optional.

hello chrieg
thank you for your great work!
The zoom function is very useful and 35% are far enough. The only thing I would change is the step for zoom. 5% steps would be much better, because it takes too long to zoom fully out and in.
And if the map gets smaller than the display during zooming out, there are some display irregularities. This dosn't matter, because functionality restores completely after zooming completely in again.
Thanks
awesome. thanks chrieg.
can you also zoom out?

ok there is definitely an error in the mapconfig.txt.
it says that there are 19 columns and 19 rows. this can't be correct since you said there are 1899 pictures and 19*19=361.
that means you have to figure out how many rows and columns there are in your map and correct the values in the mapconfig.txt file.
are there really exactly 1899 pictures or is that just the number of the last file? because if the first number is 0 the total number of images would be 1900 and i would guess that there are 38*50 rows/columns. but that's really just a guess.

"If you have found your image you need to split it up into pieces of 160 pixels in width and 120 pixels in height. "
It´s possible to use images with 120x120 or 160x160? With "Maps Images Downloader" I can do automatically download from Google Earth images with 256x256 resolution. So I wonder if you can modify the app to accepted images on that resolution.
Sorry my english and congratulations for the good job!
Daniel [biggrin]
in the description of "google maps images downloader" i read that it is able to combine the small images into a big one. from there on you could just proceed according to the tutorial by using splitimage.

Yes, works well for maps. Just use the SplitImage. But for satellite imagery file is very large and SplitImage not working. If it were possible to use images with resolution 160X160 or 120X120 I do not need to join the pieces in a single image and not need to use the SplitImage.

That was exactly what I wanted to report, mine went from 3 to 16 dots...
Now into the app, the zoom option is great, however is bit slow, why not make it jump by 5% because going form 100% to 35% takes a lot of time, specially if you are lost [toungue]
Also, the D2 screen is not that big, so why don't remove the UDLR buttons? I believe is pretty easy to assume you have to use your fingers to navigate, it's a touch screen after all. [rofl]
Like I said, I also have a huge map which I made and have already shared, however is also very slow to go from two distant points, so why not have a button that will adjust the "scroll/pan" speed like: normal/fast/faster, or maybe a "skip" 5 images?
btw, good job and thanks for the app, next week i'll be on holidays so will have a great opportunity to test it.
I've been working on some flash maps and I was going to post them when it dawned on me that I won't be able to upload them directly here. I would appreciate any suggestion for reliable file sharing service. Thanks!
If somesome needs public domain maps, you can look here:

when i edit mapconfig.txt with a linux text editor, i tried gedit and vim, it doesn't work (white screen with arrows).
..
if you're using linux, imagemagick is very very handy for splitting images from command line:
convert map.png -gravity NorthWest -crop 160x120 map%d.jpg
I also cannot edit mapconfig.txt with gedit. But with linux/OpenOffice it works!
Editing flashpad_config.txt works with gedit!
It is also no problem to edit the D2 radio.ini with gedit.
I suppose the problem is the way flashmaps_2.0.swf reads mapconfig.txt

i think that u can add buttons to navigate diagonal.
i dont know how to program with flash, but it shouldnt be so hard to do it. u just need to know which column and row u are, and then
c-1,r-1 c+1,r-1
c-1,r+1 c+1,r+1
it can be more easy to navigate with this addition.
another thing that u can do, is to change the start point on-the-go.
and last thing, i think that support at 320*240 pictures should be better, and to make the buttons disappear after 10 seconds or less.
sorry on my english :)
hope u will find my advices usefull :)
keep doing this great job!! and thanks alot.

hi,
I've created a little bash script, which creates all you need for a flash map.
1. Download this archive (http://wa552.fv15.de/sonstiges/flashview_1.0.tar.gz)
2. Unpack it
3. It creates a folder, in which are two files. The bash script and the "viewer" (Thanks to Chrieg for the good work).
4. Put the picture you want to convert in the new created folder.
5. Open a terminal and make the script runable. Now run the script (sh flashview_1.0.sh imagefile)
6. The script creates a new folder, in which is all you need. This folder you have to put on your Cowon D2.
That's all - very simply, very quick [rolleyes]

@Highlander
When I unpack the bash script, the permissions are already fine:
$ls -l
-rwxr-xr-x 1 myname users 798 23. Mär 19:42 flashview_1.0.sh
If it is not, type "chmod a+x ./flashview_1.0.sh" in your shell to add the "x" (being in the same folder).

Hi Dominik!
Seems to be a very useful thing. I just don't get the part - "how to make the script runable". Could you please explain this a bit more?
I think, after much trial and error and slowly diminishing ignorance[unsure], that the bash script is a linux program, so doesn't work for those of us running windows.
....
Now into the app, the zoom option is great, however is bit slow, why not make it jump by 5% because going form 100% to 35% takes a lot of time, specially if you are lost .....
Why not use another config file parameter to define the zoom step size, so everybody might be happy.
An easy way to run the linux script is to install:
www.andlinux.org (very nice stuff !!!!)
It has a straight forward windows installer. The only thing missing is the convert binary this is installed opening a "konsole" and run this command:
apt-get install imagemagick
Thanks to Chrieg for his good job. The new feature of flashmaps v.2.0 is great. As it works now you can use it to read not only maps but your own documents converted into jpg format too. This option is more flexible than reading a TXT file because you keep the layout of the page (underlined, headers, images, footnotes and all). You can adjust the size of fonts as you like. I convert my documents from .odt into .pdf with Open Office and then I convert the .pdf file into jpg with this great free convertion site:
http://www.youconvertit.com/ConvertFiles.aspx
I hope this can be useful to people who have problems in reading texts with D2. For this I have a request for Chrieg. Could you make buttons disappear after a while as the standard D2 buttons control? This would make the page more readable.[smile]

Thanks, but already have used flashmapV2 from Chrieg which I have overwritten the old SWP file. It you mean the stylus option to navigate then it diesn't work. Any suggestions will be gratefully received. I am using fw 2.54.
I recommend fw 3.54, I have no problems with it. Anyway, try adding the extra parameters in the mapconfig.txt file (&startat=0 and &displayfirst=your choice). Even if they are supposed to be optional I have experienced that without them my maps didn't work. The file should have a layout of this kind:
&rows=24&cols=25&startat=0&displayfirst=5
Thanks, have done that and still no luck. Will try to reload fw

'Allo, all. Elderbear's progeny here.
I went ahead and ported the bash script in to vbscript, so it will run in windows.
It still requires you to install ImageMagick, though, since the script calls that. But you can download that free from their website:
http://www.imagemagick.org/
During the install process, there's a "Select Additional Tasks" screen. On that screen, you need to select "Install ImageMagickObject OLE Control for VBScript, Visual Basic, and WSH."
Here's the script, in a zip file:
http://www.mediafire.com/?umzedf1n9gu
It includes Chrieg's viewer.swf file, and also includes the text of dreieinhalb's bash script in the vbscript's comments, showing the line-by-line translation, since it's a *very* straightforward port. (Hope this isn't stepping on any toes! I'll be happy to adjust the file specs if anyone wants me to. I did this partly for my dad and partly to try my hand at vbscript, which I'd never used before.)
You'll probably notice there are two versions of the script. The one called flashview_xp.vbs will only run in windows XP, not in any other version of windows. The one called flashview_vista.vbs should run in any version of windows that has IE installed (I think version 6 or higher, or something like that), which I added as a workaround, because for some bizarre reason M$ has taken the common controls out of VB for vista. I found the workaround online after much digging. It's a little hack-y, so I suggest the xp version if you've got xp, but the "vista" version will technically work.
Comments or suggestions?

Not to boast too much about my cub, but give his program a try with the windows exe version of ImageMagick. I just split a map into over 1300 maplets that Splitimage said there was insufficient memory for, and the D2 runs it! Map needs to be a jpeg, like with SplitImage. You just double click on flashview_xp.vbs and it will ask you what map you want to split. Takes a while on my wheezy old machine, but it gives you a message when it's done. It puts the maplets in a map folder with a configsys file and puts that and and the .swf viewer into a folder ready to put into the flash folder in the D2. Thanks to Dreieinhalb for the Linux code are due, of course.
I created several maps, but I can not copy them all to D2. The numer of free directory entries is not enough or due to the many small files the space occupied is very large.
And the startup time gets very long.
Maybe there is a way to create on big archive (like zip) with all the small jpg files in it ?

Chrieg gets credit for the flash file, too--I didn't change that at all. I actually didn't supply much here. And actually, it can split stuff other than JPEGs...I set the filter to that as a default, but since it's really just a very thin wrapper over ImageMagick, it'll split anything that ImageMagick will. (GIFs, BMPs, PNG, etc.) If I make another version, I'll update the filter to include more stuff...for now, you can select other things by changing the "file types" option at the bottom of the file dialog to "all files (*.*)". Also, if Chrieg makes a version of flashmaps capable of displaying files larger than 160x120 to avoid the "many small files" problem, I'll add a feature to make it easier to change the output size. (I tried to do this today, and then discovered that they don't actually work with the viewer. ;)
I can't run imagemagick with XP (I don't know anything about scripts and the like). What am I supposed to do after I have extracted the file...I can see no .exe...

Ok...I'm not really sure about the ethics of this, but my sister decompiled Chrieg's flash file, so I was able to make a version of his flashmaps program that uses 320x240 maps. I also updated Dreieinhalb's bash script and my windows ports of the same to chop things to this size. All three parts can be downloaded at:
http://www.mediafire.com/?nbrjdoxmm5g
Chrieg and Dreieinhalb, if you have any objections, please let me know, and I'll take the files down.
Note that this is only useful for really large maps--it won't work at all for maps smaller than 960x720, and it will only zoom out to 50% for maps smaller than 1600x1200. (It will zoom out to 30% on larger maps.)
Hope this is useful to some people. It cuts the number of files by about a factor of 4, and for very large maps, it can also have a significant impact on the total file size.

hello i have a problem. i am basically unable to do anything with flash, so maybe i misunderstood the instructions, but i have tried to make a flash map for the metro railways in Tokyo, and i only get white screens. i made the map files correctly, and also i beleive the txt file is correct, but im not sure what to do about the flash file. i tried just using the flash maps 2.0 flash file, but i only get the gray screen. maybe im just doing something really stupid, but if you could help, thanks. included are the files i have been using.

Hi, Sleeping.
There are a few errors in this setup. First of all, the map is 15 columns by 13 rows, not 14 by 12. Second, the startat parameter should be 0, not 4, because the files are numbered starting with 0. Finally, you need to remove the underscore from the filenames--"map0.jpg" instead of "map_0.jpg".
Here's a fixed version.

Ack. I've just discovered that a keylogger called "winvestigator" has been running on my machine. I'm taking down my uploads until I can determine that they're clean. If you've downloaded them already, please run anti-spyware software to ensure you're not also at risk!

I was getting into the range of 8 cycles of the dots with 3.54 with all the maps I had on the D2. Now, having converted the two biggest to the 320x240 maplets, I've been able to add a third huge one and still get a 5 sec start with 3.55 (would be less than that if I hadn't succumbed to putting in a startup animation)

i grew up and lived in sydney most of my life, and i love it too. but i hate the public transport there.
are you guys after the bus or the train lines? either way they'll be BIG.
(there's no trams in sydney, just some light rail and a monorail that all mostly used by tourists)

Do Flash Maps work with the D2 DAB model using 4.x firmware, as I am unclear about this?
Thanks.
they should, I think - I mean I see no reason for them not to work... (try them out, it wont damage your D2)

Dominic,
Flash Maps seems to work fine with Firmware 4.55 on my D2 DAB.
Regards
Does that mean the latest firmware 2.57 does not work?

Hi LitleJon, would you mind terribly reading the first post of the Finished Flash Maps (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=19180) thread. I have moved your post to the correct thread.
