View Full Version : AV out broken?

Though I rarely use the AV out feature on my 30 GB A2, I was at a friend's place and had the intention of showing him a couple episodes of Heroes. Long story short, my AV out jack doesn't appear to be working.

I've tried 3 different mini-to-RCA cables to no avail, but I do NOT have the originals that came with my Cowon. Is there something different/special about the cable that ships with the player?

Just for shiggles, I tried recording video through one of the cables with the AV In port. I got a high whine in the audio, through which I could barely hear the tv program's dialog and background music and no picture at all. Subsequent wiggling of the cable jack did produce a recognizable, albeit poor picture on the A2 and no sound at all. No such luck with the AV out.

At this point, I've submitted an RMA request and waiting to hear back from Cowon, but I figured I would ask: Does anyone have any troubleshooting/repair advice that can save me from being separated from my player during the warranty repair period?

Other than that, the playback on the A2 is flawless. I can read text, watch movies, listen to music, the works. I just can't record or port video out to a bigger monitor/tv.

It just sucks to suddenly be without those features, since they attracted me to the A2 in the first place.

Any help?

Yes there is something different, they use a 3 cable mini-jack design that's hard to find on general sale. You need to find them or try to buy some more from Cowon or from someone with a broken A2 who will sell you theirs.

The reason that they are special is that the normal ones you are using carry two signals (left/right audio). The A2 needs an extra cable to carry the video signal and hence has an extra ring on the jack.

The three that I've tried using are each 3 cable mini jacks, with red, white and yellow rca ends (each). I presume that's correct, no?

I am not, I repeat *not* using the standard mini to 2 (two) rca ends (red and white)

Yes the cowon cable is different than the cable for video recorder. The high pitch sound you got is most likely the video signal. Try searching the forum. I remember there is an old thread discussing about the cable. If i'm not mistaken, the cable from creative zen vision:m or ipod are using compatible video out cable.
