Hi,

I have the following "problem": I have a relatively huge number of mp3 files without the track number in the ID 3 tag (I recorded line-in and used MP3DirectCut to separate titles and put them in individual mp3 files). The titles DO have the title numbers (e.g. 01 Imagine .....).

I have started adding the track number with the help of winamp (mark all files on playlist, select View File Info, insert track number and click update button). And have now discovered that it is much faster with mp3tag (enter number in track number field, press intro takes me to next title's track number field).

Is there a way to make this faster? Is there an ID 3 editing program that stores the tag info (including the track number) in an editable file such with the format of tables/columns as database info (so that I could just copy and past the track numbers into the corresponding column)? Or is the ID 3 info included and kind of hidden in each mp 3 file?

Thanks for your help.

Yes ID3 tags are stored in MP3 files.
Looks like you have a very specific problem.
If you don't find a Windows solution, I can write down a script for you that you'll need to run from a Linux distribution supporting NTFS writing ( e.g the Ubuntu 7.10 LiveCD ).

FORGET MY ABOVE PROBLEM, I DISCOVERED A SOLUTION THAT SOLVES MY PROBLEM:

THE MP3TAG HAS AN AUTO-NUMBERING-ASSISTANT THAT AUTOMATICALLY INSERTS THE TRACK NUMBERS IN THE FIELD, I SUPPOSE, ON THE CONDITION THAT THE FILE NAME HAS THE CORRECT NUMBERING (01 ...., 02 ....).

AN ADDITIONAL QUESTION: DO ID3 TAG NUMBERS HAVE TO START WITH A ZERO (0)? (There is such an option in the MP3 tag editor program). I assume this is NOT necessary since the ID3 tags converted with Nero do NOT have 0's.

I don't know if it's necessary, but I think it's less confusing. The program I use, known as MP3 Tag & Rename (http://www.softpointer.com/tr.htm), offers several track numbering styles (x, 0x, xx/xx, and so on).
But I personally think that it's less confusing to put the 0, since there are some old mp3 players / programs that will put the 1st track next to the 10th and the 11th when the 0 is not present.
