Does anyone know how to use (mcdonalds) thier wifi? is it like starbucks when you have to sign up a contract for a years use? i live in australia so free wifi networks are hard to come by and i've recently heard you can get an hour of free internet from macca's and then it'll cost you $5 for 15 minutes afterwards. Sounds like they don't want internet leeches OR just want the customers to come in and out since the people who came for the free internet won't stay to pay the high price. Personaly i would like a place to check out my email when i'm not at home and macca's is spread widely around australia.
since the Cowon q5 has wifi, we shouldn't be discussing how and where we'll get our free wifi right?
look at that

you can find here all the hotsopt in australia and more.
a bout mcdonalds i think it's for free.
my sister is manager at mcdonalds and when i asked her in the past i recall that she didnt say anthing about money.. but i will ask here again today .

just checked some other forums and have discovered:
1. It cost $5 per 15 minutes (no free time)
2.Telstra is too blame for lack of free wifi
It seems Teltra wants no-one to have free wifi here - they think its like giving free money to beggars. Well this makes me Pissed at telstra; thank god i don't use thier internet cus i'll never support them now.

its just that macca's was the closest in walking distance, everything after that i'll need the train or go by car.
I know on certain trains in England, they have free Wi-Fi, you got similar in Australia, etc. ?

Hey Hess
Its growing all the time except its very underutilized as like when mobile phones came out here you were seen to be a wanker if you were seen on one, now the same with laptops, umpcs, pmps (non cowon ones[biggrin]), but sooner or later everyone will be browsing.
The think here too the country is so big compared to the population (2.5 people per square kilometer) its restricted to city centre and out about 20 or so kms

well, looky there. Im in Mcdonalds (eating a big tasty b4 a movie) and on the wifi. Here in Korea, you have to subscribe to a service, but you can use it anywhere theres a transmitter. Here, its like $17 u.s. a month for all you want service. hell, i can pick it up in my house sometimes...very convenient

Man i envy Korea - its the 2nd most connected place on earth! my friend Jasmie/yaerim is very patriotic to s. korea. If the the main language wasn't korean i would live there - otherwise i would feel left out with everyone speaking korean and i would have no idea how to speak it, plus i would also have to learn Korean! p.s do you like DBSK or TVXQ? i heard over 3/4 of the korean population love them!
@Hess
there was a plan for wifi on buses and trains but it never lifted off (plan was made last year), but they are plans to put free wifi at the c.b.d and a.c.t or at Sydney inner city place (buissness area) wich is being doe to make Sydney to look like a better ploace to do Buissness (APEC meeting was done in Sydney for the same reason - it could have been done on a island for better security but they wanted to promote Sydney!).
@mikey
It has SOMETHING TO DO WITH TELSTRA!!!!! just check some forums or other sources of information! they all mention problems with Teltrsa or at least the places i looked up.
Yes Korea have the right idea
How would these paid for wi-fi networks work with the limited configuration tools available on PMPs like the Archos players and the Q5?

i think you sign up online and you give them your debit/credit card number or if you already have a plan with them (e.g. mobile, internet) they charge it to your plan. However i thinks its a waste of money to spend $5 for only 15 minutes when i can go to a computer cafe for $2 an hour in i think westmead/wentworthville (i forget which one)
I have just asked my sister a bout the wi fi at mcdonalds and she told me that it's free.
mabye just here it's for free and in other countries it's not.

No, Koreans are ultra nationalistic, and they lie like no ones business, to build up their country in the eyes of the world. Its not as bad as southeast asian countries, but it aint Japan. They just dont get the love like Japan and China, oh well.. I dont know Dbsk but i know tvxq and its not true, maybe 3/4 of junior high school kids like them, but not most people. They have tons of great gadgets, but most people here are not gadget saavy. Even gadget people I know arent really that "geek-y." . They play games and have a myspace like page, but otherwise, they aint too into the internet, i think. Korean? I speak it (translate/interpret) but its not that interesting. I speak Japanese and it was easy to learn. But I prefer Japan alot more. That said, I was placed here to work and I take advantage of the great wireless and gadget situation...food is great, girls are kind of cute, not that interesting, and theres the nationalism thing...

Gee... the image my friend told me of Korea has shattered! i actualy thought all people in Korea were tech savy, Korea sounds kinda dull to me now. It actualy sounds a bit like america-ish except the people arn't into rap, its realy annoting in american movies they always say "y'all" every 10 seconds and other stuff like "homeboy" (no offfence intended).
On another note, how are the guys over there?(personality wise)
i've seen lots of manga/anime/manwha that show that the men are generaly kinda arrogant but in a good way (e.g. fight off another other possible suitors for thier girl with tooth and nail!), i think its impossible for that kind of person to exist but just want to make sure.
If its a wrong perception, blame years of reading shoujo when i'm bored.

Oooooh, I love Big Tasty's so much, they were only on sale in the UK for a short while, then they came back recently, but now they've gone again.

well, you confuse alot of japan and korea, theyre not the same. Korea is kind of like Japans cousin. yes, there are similarities, but tis not the cool futuristic stuff. Korean guys? jealous, drink alot, and very conservative. and alot of them dont like the fact that the Korean girls like foreigners so much nowadays. Not tech saavy, generally, except for mabye their cells, and truth be known, theyre not impressive. they look sleek, but theyre no smart phones..very limited on features. it is dull, a bit drab, but its better than alot of other asian countries, and they do have alot of wireless setup, so good for me..and living expenses are kind of cheap (outside of seoul, where land costs are crazy now)..korea just basically has japanese manga trnaslated or korean homegrown stuff, 99% is basically japanese in spirit..
and koreans are way into rap, but it isnt the cool stuff we have coming out in the us or in japan. its like 1990s stuff. not the fresh prince, but not much more advanced....korea doesnt really have an appealing music scene, except maybe to chinese. and a few boy bands that appeal to asians.
rock is here, but very derivative.
in summary, its not japan..
but it works for me...
Sorry to bring this back up but the internet in McDonalds in the UK is free. Took my MacBook in the other day, browsed for wireless connections found 'WiFi Zone - The Cloud' unprotected so I connected. Loaded up safari and it took me to a page asking me for my email address and postcode and then it gave me 24 hours of connection before I would be reset =] then I was off and running, pretty fast too, I guess nobody else was using it. Nothing was blocked either, I was quite happily downloading torrents. Just for the record too, because you don't give them your full address you don't get any junk mail from them, which was something i was weary about.
