Ahh man. Going back to that "are we more tolerant" question from a few days ago I think I might retract my statement that all ipod alternativers are pretty open to other DAPS. Rio boys have voiced their displeasure with the "fragile, weak, and un-interesting"X5.

Lol, riovolution is an awesome forum tho, I used that site for my Karma.
However, the guy who wrote it was being a complete ass. Furthermore, they do have convo's about DAP's that don't devolve to flaming.
we linked them and they linked us...
LETS TURN THIS THREAD INTO A KARMA BEATING SESSION

All the X5 bashing in the world isn't going to prevent me from watching Futurama and Family Guy on it during lunch break.

What are you, me? :)
lol... yeah, there's quite a few fanboys at Riovolution, not worth the effort to discuss other players there. and whatever you do, don't say anything bad about the karma. when i first tested it, karma sounded like shit (i didn't know it was misconfigured in the settings) and when I said so they launched a massive attack...

:D
Hey, Karmas are pretty sweet. I don't know whether its better than M3 because I've tried one, but are you going to sink to that level?

No. I love the Karma as well and I wish the Karma 2 or Chroma or whatever it is would come out alrady. No mud-slinging from me. Whatever sounds and works best to you is the best player for you.
That's ironic, the reason I never considered the Karma was because there were too many reports of it breaking a few months after purchase. And the X5 is made of metal, what is flimsy?

I just have this bad feeling that Rio is going to die out pretty soon OR refocus. There seemed to have been so many HD issues with the Karma, I don't know how many they've had to replace. Plus, they've been so hush hush about players above 6GB (ChromaKarma2 or whatever) that I think there's nothing behind the curtain to be hushed about. ie. "We've lost the high capacity battle; let Creative, Sony, iRiver, Cowon, try to face off against Apple. We'll concentrate on profitability at the low capacity end."
Just talking out of my @ss, but this was my reasoning for giving up on waiting on Rio.

Or, could be that Rio is aiming to keep it's position as standard-setter when it comes to DAPs with focus on sound rather than fashion. As far as sound goes, anyone has yet to beat Karma.
Let's face it, the Karma crowd is the one least likely to be imressed by shiny casing and color screens... I am only guessing, but maybe Karma is not rushing a new product to the market, but is working on improvements that matter to their customers.
I'm not saying that IS the case, what do I know... But I've seen comparable situations in other inbdustries in the past.
Nah, I'm sure they're off playing golf, or polo. But the X5 has alot more going for it than a good design and screen.
It seems like half of you guys didn't even read through the referenced thread. There's some negative sentiment, but they are not by any means bashing it. In fact, they are doing a lot of "______ shortcoming is actually not too bad because ________" when referring to the iAudio stuff.
Breathe in...
Yep, there's nothing like watching TV on a low res, 2" screen. Not like my fingernail is bigger than the person on screen or anything.. Wait, it is! :o
And who needs a database or proper playback of music when you're able to watch movies at less than 15 FPS on a 2", low res screen? Who needs a parametric EQ so that it's actually worth using when you have the ability to VIEW PICTURES?!?
Nothing like a DAP that requires you carry a paperclip around so that if it freezes you're not stuck without music for hours. You know, the freezes that happen randomly when you load up new music while walking with it, since this player's meant for home listening only. Oh, and ethernet rules when it picks up an invalid IP address over and over with the latest rio firmware for no good reason, all to be followed by an HD crash. Luckily, I can return it, but.. oops, they only gave me a 90 day warranty. That's what one gets for buying from someone who's been out of business over three times already.
Breathe out..
Point being? In spite of the fact that they've matured and been arouind for a while, not one company has managed to get everything right to the point where the enthusiasts can be 100% content with their DAP. Choose/insult what's best/worst for you. Yet remember whatever you pick at the moment, there's probably something blatantly wrong/missing with/from it, so there isn't any definate best or even better in most areas.

I also think some of the riovolution people are missing the point when every other thread someone posts, "I'm perfectly happy with my Karma, why would we need anything else?"
True, but Rio's not going to support you that much longer if they get into financial trouble from not competing. What if your (one's) Karma has an accident or it needs replacing. It ain't all that easy to find that replacement, and don't try holding your breath for an updated DAP from Rio that acts like the Karma.

I love my Rio Karma but the X5 absolutely blows it away in terms of sound quality and volume levels. The X5 is built better as well. The interface is equal once you get used to the folder system.
The Rio is a bit quicker in terms of access time and such. Both are great DAPs IMO. The X5 is my everyday carry now though/

Yea lots of die-hards there.. Luckily for my I ditched my Karma in time to get a cash refund. The Karma is a great player but in most cases it seems it WILL die on you, and that's a guaranty. In the couple weeks I had it the thing froze twice and dust got under it's screen. Bad build quality... Breaks my heart.
