View Full Version : Obvious Spam and Mod Notifications
Please don't notify the mods regarding any "obvious" spam that's less than a day old. If it's there I'll catch it during a normal review which I usually do at least once a day, and if it's a weekday I can't get to it any sooner than when I _do_ get to it (i.e. I can't go to the forums just because I got a notification).
Thanks!

Maybe you need a couple more mods who are at least authorised to delete spams? Seems unreasonable to expect you to do 100% of it.
Not really. Deleting spam is one of the easier parts of the job.
The admins and I are discussing other spam deterrents though. One possibility is that in certain forums you'll only be able to start new threads if you already have x number of posts.

It's easy unless you are required to do it at once (or even sooner). Some anti-spam measures would be good though .. maybe everyone's first post or two has to be moderator approved before appearing?
Ugh...then I'd _have_ to see every spam thread. No thanks.
Though if the process wasn't automated, and people had to specifically request that new threads be released....I wouldn't _like_ this per se, but at least I wouldn't have to see the spammers (hopefully).
Worst-case scenario, and I'm not advocating this, I'd see the Off-Topic forum go away entirely, since that one seems to be the big spam magnet.
Anyway, I don't see the harm in spam threads lingering. They're clutter, but they're not causing any actual damage to the board and it's not nearly as disturbing as a flame-war, for instance. Usually simply the name of the thread gives away what it is.

I think austinv ought to consider using the services of the Ancient, Cranky Technocrat a.k.a. GSV3MiaC. I can speak to his technical prowess and desire to keep 'his' haunts clean of spam and other crap. Though, at times, abrasive, he is capable of keeping a level head about himself and making decent, well-thought-out decisions about the direction of forum threads. My expereince with him on the Cowon America forum is that he is over qualified to be a moderator. I am in no way dimishing the value of doniago, the once pointy-headed mod, and his invaluable moderation skills. I only add that the mor ehelp one can get from dedicated forum members to keep th eforums clean and on track are certainly worthwhile. It's not like mods receive a fee.
So...the check isn't in the mail? [cry]

Nope, you are SOL like the rest of us elevated to mod status. We do it for 'love' (oh, puke, I can't believe I wrote that).
(long string of expletives deleted) :)
This thread is running way off topic... who's gonna notify a mod? [biggrin]
