Is there anyway that that the X5 can browse by artist, song or album info or is it just not possible? Might Cowon create an upgrade with this feature for the American market?
I'm torn between buying the iAudio X5 and the iRiver H340. The iAudio is so attractive, but the idea of having to manually organize my whole collection is daunting....
Thanks

The X5 will display info in the tag, but it will not feature database browsing.
Personally, file-tree makes the most sense and is the easiest and most convenient for me.
Thanks.
I just found austinv's review and writing in the thread "iAudiophile has an X5 in hand!"
Personally, I'm shocked that Cowon won't implement the feature, it would be so easy for them to add that programming and I'm positive would dramatically increase their U.S. sales. It's the main reason why I may buy an iRiver H340.

That may be so, but Cowon primarily serves the Korean market and database browsing apparently isn't a deep concern for them. Furthermore, I think iAudio's products are geared toward savvy consumers with better-than-average knowledge of computers; these type of people appreciate the merits of file-tree.
The iRiver seems to be a nice player, but it also seems to lag behind the X5 in quality and support.
well i tried both methods with an ipod and m3.. and id3tag is much better way of finding music once ur collection becomes 3000+ songs..
especially if u only remember the song name but not the artist..
I still don't understand how it helps, can you browse by song name or something?
Basically, you create your own, single way to navigate. How I did it:
MUSIC >> GENRE >> ARTIST >> ALBUM >> SONG
It's efficient IMO. But then again, i have only filled about 4 GB worth of music. I have about 700 high-quality songs.
Does the id3 database in the iriver work well? I thought I had heard of some issues with it. Anybody tried it?

It works very well however .....make sure that the id3 tags are set up. Some files downloaded are missing artist and album info.

There is rumor of a 20gb iRiver H10 on the way...that supports id3 tags..like they all do in the US. Wonder if they have worked out the bugs yet.... Ha.. bet not. Though my H10 has very little problems ready for a change to a new and improved model. X5!!

Yup, that's the way to go! :)

Why the American market in particular? Don't you think everyone would want such a feature???

To be fair the H3xx range is very old and shouldn't "really" be compared to the X5.

Surely you have to on the H3xx range also, no?

Um, why not? Because the iRiver has a bigger screen and more pixels, for the viewing of photos and movies all the better?

I mean it's unfair to complain to much about it's weakness. The X5 is a different generation in a way.
But it's also FAT!
Bravadon: Cowon's primary market, korea doesn't care about databases as much.

Yeah...we keep repeating this but what we need to do is IF we do want id3 tag info then lets ALL...and I mean all email Cowon and ask every single day for a date firmware will be released for id3 tag support. As they say...only the squeaky wheel gets the oil. If Cowon does not think it is that big a deal they will NEVER address it. Do we want it or NOT? Yes..yes...I know who you are....those few who don't care about id3 tag info. Yeah just like only a select few people don't have DVD players at home but...the rest of the world does and like it.
I don't have a DVD player at home.

And?

Thanks but why are you addressing this to me? :)
If you are referring to my comments on America I was more pointing out that other countries besides America are interested in these features!
I assumed everybody would include korea.

zaphanathpaneah, right on man- I like your attitude and I totally agree with you. I think Cowon can only gain by adding the ID3 TAG browsing function. It would be easy for them to add it and it would increase their sales big time. Also, it would settle my mind on which player to buy. One other feature, however, that makes me lean toward the H340 is the fact that it's all one unit. I can easily see that little add on piece -that you have to attach to the X5 in order to record, wearing out with months/years of heavy use.

The sub-pack was initially an issue for me but:
A: The iRiver is bigger because of it
B: Keeping it with the charger will be easy enough.
TBH ID3Tag support doesn't really interest me (though I've never really used a DAP to test one without it) but if you want to write an e-mail and I'll copy/paste it and send it off I'm happy to.

Well...that would be fine. Do you have a contact at Cowon? Lets rally some support for it. Just to be clear I am not knocking those who don't use id3 tags, I am just saying for those who do love it, lets get them a reason to buy into the x5. Actually I know the x5 will NEVER unseat iPod, though I wish it would just for the principle, I think more people should have a better choice of a DAP than just the fad or main stream device. I'll get working on an email and post it to a new tread entitled "RALLY for id3 tag on X5". Perhaps i'll get it done by monday. It would be great if I was not the only one though.

Lke I said I'd be happy to copy/paste an e-mail and send it off. I'm happy to help but not enough to send my own sorry.

But what about track numbers? Will the tracks be played in the order of the album? If not, I might be turned off the x5.
BTW: Sorry, I didn't see a quote button

You just have to put numbers in front of the name of the file, like this:
[1]Artist - Trackname
[2]Artist - Trackname
[3]Artist - Trackname
[4]Artist - Trackname
[5]Artist - Trackname
[6]Artist - Trackname
[7]Artist - Trackname
That can be done by your audio grabber program (EAC, Audiograbber).
Personally, i like the file-tree browsing superior to the database browsing. A friend of mine has a Philips MP3-Player that only support database browsing, and it's a glorious mess! :)
By the way: I got my iAudio G3 last week...great, really great. Even the workmanship. No creaking if you press the player in your hand. Great. *g*
Have a nice day.

I prefer
Artist - Track - SongName
Since artist is always going to be the same anyways, and it would work in case files from more than one artist get mixed together.
I have a friend with a dell jukebox with ID3 support, he has some artist names repeated because of that like:
The Beatles
Beatles
Because they aren't tagged correctly.
The point is that files don't organize themselves, and either way you need to do it.

Damn. EAC Organizes files into folders? I did it manually and renamed 500+ tracks. Didn't take that long though!
You've mentioned a good point there - does the X5 list folders beginning with 'the' e.g. "The Beatles" next to folders called plainly "Beatles" or am I going to have to rename all my Artists "Beatles, The" etc. so artists are grouped properly?

And then a year from now we all will be complaining about non-responsive customer service, after we've shut it down by spamming with complaints.
Seriously, I think those resources will be better used by people who have faulty units, or concerns or problems the manufacturer may not be aware of. They never claimed there would be a tag database, so not having one is no reason for punishing them.
If that is so important to you, there are plenty of other players who have chosen to design their product more closely matching to your priorities. iRiver H300 is the first one that comes to mind.

This is not a punishment Darkroom, this is loyal customers who appreciate the prooduct and want to help Cowom make the unit better. Let's see.... why would Cowon not want us to recommend improvments to their product so we can spend more money on their products and, god forbid, they make a few million so they can stay just above the poverty line? I can't think of a reason, can you?
Filetree is much better for chinese, japaness and korea. The data base is good for western language. This is why asia people do not care about data base much. Most of my songs are chinese, it is almost impossible for me to use data base function.

There is a fine line when you stop being a customer and become a problem instead. The above suggestion is certainly beyond making your opinion known. Anyway, I am sure they have their reasons to conduct their business the way they do. They have been very successful in doing so thus far, so obviously they are doing something right.
Reality check: Whatever you or I think we would do if we were engineering/marketing their products is insignificant. If any of us thinks he is much better at it than the current players - hey... there's a business opportunity. Spending your life e-stalking every corporation that you only agree with 99% is a waste of life.
