View Full Version : Charging the X5
Somewhere in the review of iaudio x5@ dapreview.net i read :
the X5 does NOT have
* USB or power jack built into the main unit (mini-dock instead)
1.do i have to buy the mini dock separately ?
2.what is the use of a cradle ?
3.to use the featue of inline recording is it necessarly to buy the cradle ?
iaudio x5 includes a subpack.
4. what is this subpack ?

1.mini dock? if you mean the cradle: yes; if you mean the subpack: no; ...can't think of another thing you could be meaning.
2.it's supposed to look good, be practical and you can make your wallet lighter and/or thinner, if you buy it. So it is just a gimmick...
3.no, the subpack will do.
4.without it, you can only use the USB-function and earphones. you need the subpack for the rest.
please correct, if I've written untrue stuff (except unimportant language mistakes) ;)
Other players have cradles but it provides no added functionality to the player that the subpack doesn't.
The subpack has the USB 2.0 port, line in/line out, and the AC jack spot.
I do not know if you can connect to a computer with the USB OTG.
The subpack is very small but it might be annoying that you have to bring it places if you need to use the stuff.
i was planning to buy the cradle.
Now i ll buy the remote instead.
One last thing, the subpack is about 1/4 the size of the player.
Heres a picture for you to see it.

Except it will mean you have two. Personally I charge my DAP upstairs but my computer is downstairs so it would be a bit annoying having to carry it around the house.
Plus cradles are nice you can see everything on the screen while it's plugged in. I have one for my mobile phone and it's much nicer than leaving it on the table with the standard cable where it's hard to read while plugged in.
I plan to get both the cradle and the remote. I don't much like cases.
I do not know if you can connect to a computer with the USB OTG.
I'm sure I read you can't. I don't know if it will allow you to charge this way but you can't do anything else.

Why?
I'm confused, you said
"Plus cradles are nice you can see everything on the screen while it's plugged in. I have one for my mobile phone and it's much nicer than leaving it on the table with the standard cable where it's hard to read while plugged in."
How would the phone cradle make the screen easier to read?
And you would connect the cradle to the USB connector in your computer downstairs, so how would a cradle help you charge it upstairs? The subpack is much more portable.

1. No
2. Same thing - it just looks pretty but has exactly the same functionality
3. No
4. Subpack=Mini-dock
Thanks exity, for answering the questions and make some things clear. I also didn't know what the "minidock"(subpack) was, but now I do.

LOL sorry my bad.
I went as it's in a cradle the angle of the screen is much easier to read instead of it lying on the desk.
And you would connect the cradle to the USB connector in your computer downstairs, so how would a cradle help you charge it upstairs? The subpack is much more portable.
It wouldn't.
I meant I can use the cradle for charging and copying tracks downstairs, and use the sub-pack with the AC adapter upstairs.
Oh, well I'll just carry the sub pack and save 30$ :)
