View Full Version : OGG vs FLAC for High Quality Sound
Does anyone notice a difference between OGG or FLAC when playing on the iAudio 7? Which would you recommend for highest quality playback?

I'd recommend you do some blind testing with the same track encoded in both and see if you can reliably spot the difference. Most people can't tell Q=1 .ogg from .flac, never mind Q=5 or Q=9 (both if which are still smaller).
flac is a nice archive media in case someone comes up with the ultimate .blob encoder which can compress perfect music into 4 bytes a fortnight, but for use on a portable player .. I don't see the point.
Does the I7 support OGG tags correctly though? Mine isn't showing up right......

It shows album/artist/track name etc (the basic stuff) in file/folder view (so it does read the tags) but in 'tag/music' view it can't even show those. So no, it doesn't work if you want to sort by genre or year or whatever.
Mind you, I'm not sure flac is any better. 8<,
FLAC does show up correctly in the tag/music view! Now there's a reason to use it.....shame though that it takes up a bunch more room.
What's the easiest free program to use to rip a CD using FLAC?
Hmmmm......this is odd. It appears that OGG files do correctly show up in the music mode as well (at least the ones I have tried). But they are kind of broken in that respect. I'm gonna stick with FLAC unless I can't.
