hello all
i've read through the forums a couple of times but couldn't find an answer to my question.

got my iaudio 7 8gb today. when connecting the usb cable to my laptop, the symbol "usb connected" appears as it should. the manuel states that the player should now switch into the battery charging-mode and a battery symbol should appear. (it would then be possible to see the charging state by clicking at "remove hardware safely".)

unfortunately, the battery symbol does not show up. if i disconnect the player and remove the hardware safely, the player seems to charge and the battery symbol appears.
however, i can't load and charge the player at the same time that way.

that can't be right?
tried reset, didn't put firmware on it yet but i doubt it would help.

what do you guys think?
i'm confused 'cause i did expect all sorts of problems but not that one. if it really is one?

would really appreciate your help. many thanks in advance.

If you are running Windows then it works. Otherwise it seems to not work at all. Best bet is to just leave it plugged into USB for a few hours and it should be fully charged, you can't really damage it by leaving it plugged in even when fully charged.

Am using Windows XP already.
I am not afraid that I would damage it by leaving it plugged in. It's just that the manual states something completely different and, as said, I find it rather weird that the charging symbol only appears when I disconnect the player via the "remove player safely mode". Also, I can't check the battery status that way which is also not convenient! Pretty annoying to be honest. Obvisiously it shouldn't be that way, so many other suggestions appreciated.

@keef: interesting... does the player charge, no matter which symbol appears?

edit: martin says it does. well, I would be interested in the reason for this anyway. I'd like to see the charging status, that's all (without having to disconnect). Is that not possible?

I'm not sure what the problem is here. As long as you are USB connected, and the PC is able to transfer data either way, you get a 'USB connected' symbol. As soon as you 'safely disconnect hardware' in XP (and presumably, if you were just plugged into an A/c charger, rather than USB) you get a 'state of charge' indication (although all I've ever got is 'full') - you do have to wait maybe 30 seconds. You do not unplug the USB at this point, just wait.

What is it you were expecting that you didn't get?

As someone already said, and as with other players like the X5, the thing is charging the whole time you are USB connected anyway, however the display only starts showing state of charge when you 'safely disconnect hardware', so USB transfer is no longer possible. As far as I can tell this is what the manual says.

Thanks GSV3MiaC!

Okay, then it's obviously not possible to see the battery status without interrupting the USB transfer. That's pretty clear then. Not excellent, but clear and okay for me.

I was just confused by the manuel which seems to indicate that the player should show the charging status symbol when plugging it in (at least in the german translation).
Thank you guys. Going to tuck into the other functions now. :)

Oh, a German translation of the manual - that explains it then, since even the English one is seriously buggy. By the time it's been turned from German into French, then Italian, then Arabic, and back into Korean, it will probably be quite interesting. 8>.

Most Cowon players are this way (well, ones with internal batteries), they don't tell you 'charging' or anything about the charge status, until they can't tell you about being USB connected - that seems to take priority. presumably to stop you pulling the plug too soon, just because it says 'fully charged'.

Given the current transfer speeds (even with 1.13 firmware) I can pretty much guarantee it will be fully charged before you can get 8GB of music loaded onto it. 8<,

fwiw, I just managed to 'safely disconnect hardware' having used my I7 all day, and I do indeed have some sort of orange beer glass dancing around saying 'charging' although it really give no idea whether the player is 5% charged or 95% charged. Stupid animation .. just show me 0-4 bars please. Another triumph of form over function. 8<,

Now I'm going to pull the plug, because I happen to know it is 80% charged already, and further charging is not necessary and won't help the battery life any.
