View Full Version : How do I format a SDHC?
I'm not very techno savy so if you guys can help me, I'd really appreciate it.
I have a d2 and I've already updated to 2.5b. I just received my SDHC (Transcend 8GB class 6) in the mail. I'm off to the store now to buy a SDHC reader as my old reader doesn't recognize the SDHC.
So my question is, how do I format the sdhc? I put the card into the reader and then what? Someone already suggested that once you do format the card, make various files on it for pics, movies etc. No problem, I can do that. Someone was also mentioning FAT or something. What's that about and do I need it and if so, how do I do it?
Many thanks to everyone.
It may already be formatted - try using it and see. My Toshiba came fully ready for use by the D2.
SDHC cards are typically formatted in FAT32.

Hi cangel. If you have the USB connection mode set to MSC (under Settings->System) on the D2 then the SDHC card should appear as a drive in Windows. So, all you should have to do is bring up Windows Explorer, identify which drive it is right-click on it and choose 'Format'. A dialog will appear and format it as FAT32.

If you put the card in an SDHC reader you will get the same thing - a new removable disk drive. Normally a card reader is much faster than going through the device (in this case the D2), but suck it and see.
Thanks for your replies. My 8GB Transcend class 6 card is working fine. Thanks again.
Hello
My problem is the following:
I have a Kingston 4 Gb SDHC card, I formatted it and put files on it but the D2 just wont recognise the files, I even tried to make directories that are on the D2's own memory but that did not help either. If somebody had the same issue or can help me I would really appreciate. Thanks

what type of files did you put on it?
Hi
I formatted it in windows explorer in FAT32, I put on music and video also even via video-conversion software so it should have put it in the correct way but that wasnt the case it still didnt recognize the file, in the D2 root I have two directories called D2, first is the bulit-in memory the other for the sd-card but when I browse the direct. it goes to the subdirectories of the built-in memory, so I dont know what to do
OK now it works fine, i formatted the card again with the same parameters and now it works, i dunno what it could be anyway now its cool to have a lot of space to put on videos

Hmm weird. When you stick in a SD card it should mount under /D2_EXT regardless, there should never be two /D2 directories? Well, If you have to ever format it again, do it FAT32 with an allocation size from 8192 (minimum cluster size for an 8G card, slower but more usable space) to 32768. (faster but more wasted space with lots of small files.)
There are also 3rd party formatters like Panasonic's SDFormatter v2 (http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html) although feedback indicates people have mixed results with it.
