View Full Version : D2 Font Patch
New version.
No big changes, just some cosmetic fixes. Also works with 1.xx versions of firmware.
I think it deserves a separate thread, so it will be easier to find.
Enjoy!
How to install Font Patch:
1. Download fontpatch and D2 FirmWare (make sure it's the same as the FW version you have on your D2)
2. Unzip both
3. Launch fontpatch
4. [in fontpatch app] Navigate to folder 2 of the D2 FW
5. Execute fontpatch
6. drag&drop D2N_font.bin [from folder 2 of D2 FW] to D2 root (the "root" is the D2 drive itself)
7. eject and restart D2, voila your font has been emboldened
does this increase size only, or change style, or what...
the one im familiar with only increases size of font.
any chance of getting side by side screenshots of the new font patch and old font patch in effect on the D2 to show the cosmetic fixes?
In the screen themes (http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=14856) thread you'll see a lot of screenshots, they all show the new font.
And Dominic, it's unlikely you'll notice the cosmetic fixes.
okey doke mate, if you say so, Thanks for all your work so far, you've helped us all out loads, I really appreciate it and i'm sure everyone else who's used your programmes and patches does too.
Huh? I don't appreciate these updates at all.
. . .
. . .
Just kidding.
MaxSt has been an incredible, yet highly reserved, force in turning the D2 into a UI modding wonderland. Colour me continually impressed. I suppose that might be greenish blue, or something.
- wader
Don't mean to sound stupid but what do you need to do with it to make your font bigger?
any chance of it just being a regular zip? the exe browser doesnt show my D2 (im on vista...vista doesnt see it as a hard drive, but as a portable device which is not assigned a hard drive letter)....(also, i use MTP)...(and where the hell did my system folder go?!?)
. . . (also, i use MTP)...(and where the hell did my system folder go?!?)
SYSTEM folder is not visible under MTP browsing, as you already figured out! :)
- wader
well......crap!....if i switch it, and then turn it back, will i lose all my..."stuff?"
and how do i do it?
the way i see it, i can reset everything if i need to, but i dont see a font file =[
scratch that, i went ahead and reformatted the whole thing (all my data was on the SD, so i just popped it out and ill just pop it back in when im done)...in other news, if you make a system folder, stick the logo.ilb and then stick it in the root drive, the player will then go ahead and install it and use it like you did stick it in the system folder to begin with. thats just an easy way for someone like me to cheat =P
Who Am I?

the way i see it, i can reset everything if i need to, but i don't see a font file =[what?! switching between USB connections shouldn't remove any source of data (well, there was that one time with my F2) [rolleyes]
and OMG i noticed that to. can't view the system folder with the D2!(ok, your meaning by PC or within having the player on?).
well......crap!....if i switch it, and then turn it back, will i lose all my..."stuff?"
I know that you lose your playlists, but haven't heard of anything else going away.
There have been some file indexing issues, where files don't appear in the D2 UI after switching from MTP to MSC, but I believe each of those cases I saw involved trying to copy those original files to the D2 via a UMS-protocol program under MTP mode. Or something weird like that. Recopying the files fixed the issue.
- wader
like i said, i popped out the SD card and just reformatted and reinstalled my theme and all that jazz. everything has gone smoothly. took me all of 30 seconds to recreate my default jeteffect theme...
i dont want to make a new topic, but wader, what is the best video converter for BIG files? the one that elvis has made works, but once it goes over 100 mb, it always fails and i want to encode movies and that kind of jazz.
Yup, I was late to respond for your prior post.
I don't know if there is a best video conversion tool for all bigger files, and I use various ones (some, in two- or three-stage processes).
However, for converting DVD-sized movies with a single encoding pass and not worrying about external subtitle integration, I've found that ffmpeg is tough to beat for the D2. Instead of using a batch file and two-pass encoding, I use WinFF and single-pass encoding for the faster conversion jobs - which actually looks pretty swell on the D2 and stays in perfect A/V synch. See this (http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?p=133971#post133971) and the post which follows it for my usage details.
There's more information on using ffmpeg (with other tools) for D2 encoding here (http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=15172).
Now, get back on topic, you! ;)
- wader
well, i WILL get back on topic with this handy word of advice...
just make it a zip. drag and drop the 2 (or 1) file into the root folder. unplug, restart, and it says "Font Update."
no reason to make it an exe when all you do is put it in root.

Need to advice how to use this patch? Tried but didn't work, it said "Error : D2N_bin not found"
Anyone can assist?
My FW version is 2.21.
Download the firmware from www.cowonglobal.com
Unzip it and you'll find D2N_font.bin in there.

Sorry, I forgot to say 2.20 and 2.21 are the same firmware... ooopsy daisy...
But if you want to use 2.21 (http://www.advancedmp3players.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=7249) it's on the AMP3.co.uk website.
Here's a link to 2.20 (http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=C08&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=download&category=21&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=download&desc=asc&no=258&bmenu=download) off the cowon website anyway.

After launching the Fontpatch then drag & drop D2N_font.bin to D2 root. Will this delete all data in D2?
Nope, it will just reload the font, which you have now emboldened.
(Folders 0 and 1 erase stuff, Folder 2 installs theme and font)
So just drag & drop D2N_font.bin to the D2's root and restart, it'll all be good dude.

No it'll all be good.
With the D2 Firmware it is folders 0 and 1 that erase data on the unit, folder 2 contains the D2 theme and D2 font.
So, if you drag & drop D2N_font.bin to the D2's root and then restart your D2 it will simply upgrade the font and that is all :)
Just wanted to thank MaxSt for the nice font patch...
I put it on my D2 month's ago but for some reason I didn't like it so I took it off...but now I like it...lol...not sure why....thanks MaxSt..[biggrin]

I followed the instructions and saw the installation being upgraded on the D2s screen, but the font size didn't change.
I'm using fw 3.41; could this be the reason?
Updated version of my Fontpatch instructions "for dummies" as requested by Sirocco. The fontpatch is a programme designed by member MaxSt which will embolden all text displayed on the D2, including album, artist, title, all menus etc... The effect of this patch is to make the text visually clearer to see as through the emboldening process the text gets bigger on screen.
Instructions:
1. Download fontpatch and Firmware (make sure it's the same as the Firmware version you have on your D2)
2. Unzip both the fontpatch file and firmware file you have just dowloaded
3. From the unzipped fontpatch file you will see a programme called "fontpatch", it will look like a D2. Double Click the fontpatch icon.
4. A screen will appear asking you to select a folder, navigate to folder 2 of the Firmware you downloaded in step 1 (it will be located on your computer, where ever you chose to save it)
5. Once you have selected folder 2 click "ok"
6. Next you will have to drag&drop D2N_font.bin from folder 2 of your firmware to the D2 root (the root of the D2 is when you double click on the D2 and see the Music folder, Video folder, Text folder, etc)
7. Eject and restart D2, voila your font has been emboldened.
You can download the fontpatch here (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2123&d=1185322183). You will have to find the firmware yourself on the Cowonglobal website, or by searching these forums.
Hope this helps,
Dominic.

When I try to access that first link I get a 'login' page (even though I am logged in) and attempting to login there gets me an 'invalid password' response (even though it isn't). What gives??
dunno, I updated it though in case others got the same error

I like the new font. It makes the text viewer much more readable. Thanks a lot.
Is it possible to use the same font in the dictionary?
Applied fontpatch successfully on 2.46 firmware.
Thanks a lot! [laugh]

Went through all the steps and with FW 2.5 there isnt a root folder but a system folder which I take is the same. After dropping the bin file there the font didnt change. any ideas?
Works for me on 3.51 stable :) Thx
there isnt a root folder but a system folder which I take is the same.
No, it's not the same. Root isn't a folder.
Just copy the bin file to the player, but don't put it any folders.

Just got my D2 so pls excuse my dumbness.
I want to try the font upgrade but do not understand the references to folder 0, 1 and 2.
I have FW2.5 and dont feel the need to change it as Ive had the player for 2 days and it works with no problems.
When I connect the player to the computer, all I see are the folders - flash, system, music, videos, pictures etc.
If I run the font change exe, do I choose system folder?
Does the D2 have to connect in the MTP mode to do this or have I got it completely wrong?
Is it easier if someone uploads the font bin and I can just put it in the root directory and restart the player? If so, could someone do that?
I am a bit confused about this but no doubt its just me.
Hi,
Sorry for being noobish, but i just can't update my font and it freaks me out. can someone tell me the exact updating process (i work with XP). i download it,then what? should i "open" or "download" it? and after that should i put it in the root folder or SYSTEM folder? i know what happens next - you unplug and restart the player.

I just downloaded it last night and applied it, worked like a charm for me. Thanks for this!
Is it possible to use a different font altogether?...i just applied the patch but with the extra thickness the font doesn't look as nice as it used to...is it possible to use a more 'smoother' font?

Hi all, I've just ordered the 8gig DAB version of the D2 and was just wondering if the font patch is compatible with the 4.51 version of the firmware? or does it not matter as long as the firmware used to install the patch is the same as you currently have?
Thanks in advance
Test it yourself. Download the firmware and patch it.

Ok, thats great thanks.
I was only initially concerned because i couldn't find a downloadable version of the firmware on the cowon website. But amp3 have since provided a link to download it so i should be all sorted.
hello,
Can i have the patch with other fonts and font-sizes, or how i create one?

Mayder, please read this thread. There are instructions on where to get the font patch and how to use it.

No unfortunately it seems that cannot be done. If you search these boards you should come across a thread which explains why, this one here http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=15841&highlight=font+change for instance is a few pages long but well worth the read

Good evening everybody

Hello yacine
Nice to meet you again so far [rofl]
Yes,my friend a little bit anxious to damage my brand new D2 (you know me well now) because I have not yet found my own pretty korean fiancé.[laugh]
I just have upgraded my 2.5 in a 2.51 and SURPRISED :....... It works fine
I change also the theme and SURPRISED :.................... It works fine too.
I have now a beautiful Dark theme (from Cassini)
BUT I fail very badly to apply the Font patch [cursing]..... but I think that now I know why [rolleyes]
see you later MaxSt ,yacine (and others) .
have a nice day with your cowon D2 !
Noob question...
If I want to install one of the finished themes, I do not need to run fontpatch, correct? I would just use the D2N bin file which I download with the finished theme...
Many thanks!

Of course you need fontpatch only if you wish increase the polices a little bit .
and you can install a theme perfectly without fontpatch .
In case y'all haven't read, the Zen V:M hackers are now able to load any font they want onto their ZVM's, so, any chance we can do the same for our D2's ? AFAIK the ZVM is far more difficult a device to crack than the D2

Fixed, so it will work with the x.53 too:
Hmm...i don't know what i'm doing wrong, but i'm trying to use the font patch, i just upgraded to 3.51 from 2.51. I had no problems with the fontpatch for 2.51, but 3.51 i'm having problems with. It will say upgrading font, and then when its done and i turn it back on, its still the same size font. I'm only dragging the files from folder 2: D2N_font and the d2fontpatch. Please help, my eyes are killing me.
Don't drag D2FontPatch.exe anywhere.
Run it on your computer.
Ok, nvm. I didn't run the patch to upgrade the bin file. It works now. Thanks for the patch!

Actually it does not. With 3.53b it is not working - if you try, you get an alert window with text message Error: wrong version of D2N_font.bin
Can you fix this? I really love your font - thnx

It works fine with 3.53b.
Use the new version from MaxST and run it in map 2 of the 3.53b firmware.
Run D2FontPatch.exe and upload the new D2N_font.bin to your root.

Thanks for the update.
is it easy to remove this if i don't like the larger font? if so, how?
also this won't make me lose all the files on my D2 by putting this on and possibly removing it, will it?
It's a rather simple process:
1. You take a copy of original file D2N_font.bin that comes in folder 2 of firmware.
2. Apply changes on one of the files D2N_font.bin
3. Copy it to root directory of your D2 player.
4. Switch OFF and then ON and you'll see font being applied then the player switch OFF automatically.
5. Next time you switch ON your player will show new fonts.
Your data won't be affected the player is designed to change skin and fonts safe and easily.
If you don't like the fonts you simply apply the file that you kept as copy in step 1.
This is not a change of firmware... it's a change of resources.
I repeat... the system is designed to do this.
yes!
font patch is correct for f/w 3.54
from this place:

Do the custom fonts (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18972) are working in 3.54 too?
Folder 2 is identical in 3.53 and 3.54.
So in terms of themes and fonts, there is no difference between 3.53 and 3.54.

thanks for the answer.
Thanks for that awesome font patch! I tried out some of Rigoberts Arial fonts before, but somehow some letters were cut off at left and the text was no fun reading with them. With your font its much better. The only thing that bothers me a little bit is the tiny serifs at the tips of the uppercase E. The font is supposed to be a sans serif font and this letter somehow always pops out of the text when reading, because it is the only one with serifs.
I dont know if someone else has the same impression and, to be honest, I did not read this entire thread, but perhaps some other people feel like me...
EDIT: I noticed, that other letters like the F also have serifs. I dont want to offend you or something. Its just somehow not so readable to me regarding the small font size. Perhaps you can send me the font files and i can change it myself, so we have another font patch available...
another clear easy-to-read font would be nice, is there any chance the font size can be made bigger still?
Folder 2 is still identical to the previous versions.
Hi, I have not been able to find any comment on fontpatch AND firmware 2.54 in this thread (sorry!) Is it possible to use fontpatch with firmware 2.54? I have used it with previous firmware 2.50 and 2.51. But when I use it with 2.54 it gives out an error message. Is it correct that (with the D2 having firmware 2.54 on it) I execute the fontpatch file from the PC and tell it that the firmware it asks for is located on the D2? Or is it done differently? Thanks! bwprius
Are you sure you're using the latest version of the patch?
Are you sure you're using the latest version of the patch?
If you ask this question, then I will certainly not be using the latest version. I was not aware of this possible reason. Does this thread contain the latest version? How do I distinguish my possibly outdated version from the latest one? Or are there fontpatch versions according to the firmware version? I now have 2.54. Any advice or link is higly appreciated. [thumbsup]
bwprius
Does this thread contain the latest version?
Yes, read the page 5.
How do I distinguish my possibly outdated version from the latest one?
File "date modified" would be different?
MaxSt - just wanted to ask,
The 'updated' version on page 5 - I presume this is also the same version that is linked to in the first page?
With things like this, it can be very time consuming to have to dig through x number of pages to first check if there are any new versions of the app - I naturally tend to just presume the first page will always be updated with the latest release as there is no gain from having an older version still showing there.
Anyway, just wanted to check.
Thanks for the app either way - SOOO much more ledgible with it :)

Hi Guys,
Thanks for the font patch, much better to read stuff.
Just a question. For some reason the D2 does not show text properly in that words are often parly on one line and partly on the next... all the other mp3 players i have used will wrap text properly.
Do you or anyone else know why this has not been fixed yet?
Thanks,
Mark.

No, but you could try to prepare your textfiles for the D2 (if you meant the text file reader). For example with my text wrapper (see signature) [rolleyes]

Thanks again MAXST
Works perfectly in v3.55
Now font is a lot bolder and larger
thank you
it is very straight forward:
1. download fontpatch and FW (make sure it's the same as the FW version you have on your D2)
2. Unzip
3. Launch fontpatch
4. Navigate to folder 2 of the FW
5. Execute fontpatch
6. drag&drop D2N_font.bin to D2 root
7. eject and restart D2, voila your font has been emboldened
Thanks for this very clear explanation ;)

How can I run the .exe file on OSX?
Hi, can somebody please post or point me to an unzipped version of this font patch as we lowly mac users are unable to run your 'darkside' exe's...[wink]
Cheers
Can't you use this:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/darwine
Err... yeah I spose, but I thought it would be easier to just post the unzipped font patch (for all the non-pc users) than download a 30meg emulator to unzip one program? It can't be that big can it? (the font patch that is). I could also reboot my mac into windoze, copy the patch over, unzip it, run it and copy back to the mac drive but I guess I'm being lazy [blush]
Thanks for the quick reply anyway MaxSt [thumbsup]
p.s. I'm a recent convert to the D2 and lovin it! I shied away from the ipod after a bit of research, glad I went the D2 - just gotta get rid of these stock ear buds - they're killing me. Going to pick up some Grado SR60's this weekend... sorry bit off topic.

Slow way of doing it with the fontpatch.
Mine was done like installing a theme. I got 'Font Upgrade' & progress bar on restart.

What? If you are going to pass judgement at the very least make a post that makes sence.

^ Makes sense, if you spoke English![toungue]
With this fontpatch it is pretty much akin to installing firmware. I'd just plonked a D2N_font.bin into my root directory.

Holy crap you don't say! [rolleyes] Of course first you have to actually use the fontpatch application... so please feel free to show me how the way you do it is faster than the "slow" way I have shown. Also point out which steps are not required as I can then modify my instructions.

You can't modify those instructions.
Your method:
1. download fontpatch and FW (make sure it's the same as the FW version you have on your D2)
2. Unzip
3. Launch fontpatch
4. Navigate to folder 2 of the FW
5. Execute fontpatch

7. eject and restart D2, voila your font has been emboldened
Mine:
1. Download D2N_font.bin file
2. Unzip
3.Drag&drop D2N_font.bin to D2 root
4.Remove D2 from computer and restart it.
Maybe I'm confused, always thought 4 was <7?
I see, you use a bit of magic to get the programme to work...are you honestly saying you don't do steps 3,4&5? If that is the case then max must have changed the way fontpatch opperates since I wrote those instructions.

^ That was my point, why use a seperate program[fontpatch] to do the same thing in less steps? Or have I disovered something?
Nope, never even heard of 'fontpatch', until recently.

Hahaha! Why did you post in this thread if you aren't even using the fontpatch application?? Seriously what a waste of time... You wanna know what fontpatch is? Read this thread, use the search feature, help yourself.

Haha, is it not just changing fonts then?
Edit - Sorry for misunderstanding dude. I actually had the fontpatch in my folder of D2 stuff; firmwares, fonts, themes, wallpapers...
I tried it, its definitely an improvement, easier to read.[biggrin]

Will the font stay big even if i've changed themes?
If it's not big enough can you change it to say 14-16 font?

Since I didn't find an answer anywhere I shalt post the question here.
is it possible to make a font that will show Hebrew while using the English language setting?
Thanks allot :)
I don't think that would work well, because the text orientation would be left-to-right, still.
Humanmoreorless
05-19-2008, 10:45
When I use the Hebrew settings there are still some options that remain in English, mainly the JetEffect options, all of the pop up buttons.. thats it I think...
so theres got to be a way to do it the other way around...
no? :)

show Hebrew... where?

show Hebrew... where?
Browser and player
AFAIK, when using the English menu, a song name that is in hebrew will be reversed.
The only way to sort this is to manually flip the file names and id3 tags with a program like הפוך על הפוך.
Humanmoreorless
05-19-2008, 11:21
so there no way to win both battles... oh well :)
thanks guys :)
Browser and player
Elaborate, please.
If you mean the "browser" "jeteffect", "menu", "save", etc buttons - they're graphics and will be the same no matter what language you select. You'll have to make a custom theme to rename them.

MaxSt link to Dominics instructions in the OP, not straight-forward drop into root job...
Also .exe's cannot be used on Macs.
Where do I put this .exe file? Do I have to run it under Windows?

^ Get your firmware.
Run the fontpatch.exe and direct it to Folder 2 of your firmware. Drag & Drop the updated file into your D2's root.

your suppose to run this within the Firmware Folder 2 not the D2 ROOT. Download Firmware again and extract the Font patch into Folder 2 and run it.

Don't have a folder 2. I have the 16gb with the latest firmware already pre-installed. thanks
Then you have to download your firmware version from Cowon. Run the Font patcher inside Folder 2 of what you downloaded and aftwerwards put the d2n_font.bin into your D2s root.

just to note that the d2n_font.bin File will only upgrade the Fonts not the Firmware itself.

Does this delete all your data on the D2? Fairly new at all of this so I don't want to lose the data by accident.

No, it won't. All your media remains unharmed.

Btw what's the difference between 3. Launch fontpatch and 5. Execute fontpatch ? [wacko]

Ironic this thread got posted in. I changed my font from white to black and decided it was a bit thin.
Right easy-peasy.
Download the Fontpatch program. Unzip it.
Download firmware thats on your D2[i.e. mine is 3.57]. Unzip it on your desktop.
Double-click on Fontpatch, then direct it to 'folder 2' of the firmware you just put on your desktop. You should get a message advising you of fontpatches success.
Plug your D2 in with USB and just drop the new 'D2N_font' file from 'folder 2' into the D2s root, in 'devices with removeable storage in My Computer.'
Unplug D2, then turn it on, you should get a Font Upgrade screen. When this is done it turns off again. Next time you turn on your Font should be embiggened.:D

3. open fontpatch app
5. use fontpatch to change the font
I've made a side by side comparison of the original and the patched font, maybe it's of use to some of you...

Hi,
first i want to say thanks to MaxSt.This font data is really good.
My firmware is 2.57.
After i updated the font on my D2, i check the new view.
The Problem:
After i ve clicked on Pictures button, now i see my wallpapers, but if i cklick on any wallpaper it shows a Folder like Music,Video,Record etc.
Here is a picture of it
Go back at the original font, and see if there's a difference.

is there any relevance of getting this for the 3.** fw?
The same relevance as using it for any other FW
Hey this seems to be the big thread about modifying fonts, so I was wondering is it possible to get rid off the text in the two front menus, but keep it in the now playing screen and browser. I havn't seen anything about this and would appreciate it as some themes come with there own text and it looks really weird to have two different things saying "videos"
thanks.
Just wondering before I install the font patch:
How could I undo the changes of the font patch?
Installing the whole firmware again?
Backuping folder 2 before patching and for downgrading just overwrite the patched folder 2 with the backuped folder?
Just change D2N_font.bin for the original one.
djini: you can get rid of the menu text using the font file present in Cassini's OLED III theme (as well as from other themes too i'm sure), but i'm not sure whether or not you can change it back (that is, i haven't been able to yet)
edit: yes, of course you can change it back to having menu text when you want. simply copy the d2n.bin file from the original firmware back in and your text will be restored (why i didn't think of that i'll never know)
