An impossible question to answer. I suppose the greatest band is the one you like the most. Some traits I would consider necessary to be labeled among the greatest would include longevity, record sales, number of times you appeared on the cover of Rolling Stone, media coverage, industry insider opinion, and the ability to affect the way people view the world.

Agreed, here's a link to a forum gathering data on best selling albums ever. May give some ideas as to which albums to listen to from the various artists.
