I've seen lots of complaints about the small file / folder limit of 2000 / 200 on the i7, so I thought I'd start a more constructive thread where we can post what minimum file / folder limit we actually need!

I'll kick off: I have 1916 files in 326 folders, at 6.23 Gb, which works out as 307.5 files per gig, and 52.3 folders per gig.

This would mean minimum acceptable limits of:

4Gb model:
210 folders, 1230 files

8Gb model:
420 folders, 2460 files

If some of you would like to post numbers too, perhaps Cowon will have a better idea of what's required for their next firmware release. Well, we can live in hope, anyway.

It all depends on how your music / videos are encoded. For me, I have most of my music 192 kpbs minimum so there's no way I can get more than 2000 songs on 4GB.

On My PC I keep music at q=7 .ogg, however on the portable player I use Q=0 or Q=1 .ogg, say around 2MB/song, so I need 4000 files in 8GB, 8000 in 16GB. Folders? Well for whole CDs it's around 15 songs per folder, but if I use subfolders under each artist, then add some more - say 10 songs per folder. If I just load favorite tracks, and don't change the layout, there could be up to 1000 folders (got that many CDs).

'What the limit should be' is missing the point though. THERE SHOULD BE NO LIMITS (except the size of the memory on the device). 'Can't be done, John'? .. see Rockbox.

UPDATE:
---------
Q=-1 .ogg, which sounds just fine, works out at 6500 tracks to 8GB, and about 700 folders, assuming 2 levels of folder structure (artist / album / <tracks>).

I have like 520-580 songs in 50-60 folders makes up 4 GB for me.
Most of my music is longer then 2-4 minutes though
