Is the X5 audio quality better than Iriver?

Yes, much better. Much flatter, plus you get all of the BBE effects and equalizer, ect. But if you like a more bass heavey, "bloated" sound, then Iriver all the way.

How is flatter better?

It is better because it shows the truest representation of the sound, not some digitally enhanced and altered misrepresentation. If you want to alter the sound then the Iaudio has many settings and effects to do that, but atleast the stock sound is cleaner. Not to say that the Iaudio is completely flat in itself, as it has some digital misrepresentation as well. Its just not as bad as the Iriver (or my Sony for that matter). I am also not saying that Iriver sounds terrible, but when looking for sound quality people mostly look for a flat response. It all really depends on your preferences, though.

The iRivers also have their own EQs and special sound effects.

But you want a flat base to work with so you can morph it more easily to your tastes, if the base is messed up adjusting it will be harder.

excluding the sound effect, i think that the sound quality of Iriveris more pure and clear than iAudio!!!

Personally I doubt I'd have a problem with any of them.

does Iriver really have more bass than Iaudio, or a simply equalizer setting in iAudio would balance the difference of bass?

I think you missed his point. He means if you buy an iAudio and an iRiver new, and play the same song on them without changing anything like BBE or EQ settings, the iAudio will sound more like the original song that was recorded while the iRiver adds more low sound, even if you did not change anything.

This does not mean iRiver has more bass. You can get just as much, maybe more base from the iAudio, but only if you go to the BBE settings and set that.

to refrain: iRiver doesn't have more bass than iAudio. It sounds lower when you have not asked for bass.

When I use iriver H140, I usually use normal. When use iaudio U2, I need to use user EQ to adjust the sound.
