View Full Version : Just recieved my i7 from AMP3
Okay guys and gals - I just recieved my i7 courtesy of AdvancedMP3Players.co.uk (http://amp3.co.uk). I am pretty impressed with it so far. I installed firmware version 1.12 immediatly and so far everything is cool. Same semi-parametric EQ as on all the new Cowon player. Fast transfer rates of roughly 5 MB/s . Any questions post them here and I will try and answer them or adress them in the review.
I'll take some pics soon too. [biggrin]
UMS & MTP: Check!
ID3 Tag Browsing: Check!
Gapless: Not really - gap about 0.1 seconds long - good enough if you ask me.
Firmware upgrade didn't delete all the files on the player: Wohooo!
Still attracts fingerprints like cowshit attracts flies
Build quality: Nothing creaking. Does feel a little squishable when putting a lot of pressure on it. Should be fine.
Controls: Seem really good to me, same as on the i6
Screen: If I am not mistaken, it is better than the one on the i6, but I really can't tell you seeing that my ex-gf now has my i6 ... [thumbdwn]
Playlists: Urgh, give me a dynamic playlist that I can save ... [cursing]
Volume: Ahhhrg, pain in my ears! Very very loud. Blasts my Grado SR 80.
FM Radio: Seems good enough
Voice Recording: Tiny bit of fuzz, sounds better than most others IMHO
Boot time: fast - only 100 tracks loaded at the moment though.
System Stability: No crashes yet
Transfer speeds: Fast (as mentioned previously)
General impression ATM: Really good [excited]
Should be gettting a Noreve sandy vintage case for the i7 too - should also be good.
Ahhhrg!
128 kbps recording in WMA [cursing] [cursing] [cursing]
This sucks!

So does the change recording bitrate functions (as described in the manual) not work then., or is 128 the max? The screen shots in the manual definitely show 256kb/s.
At the moment the max is 128. I will ask Cowon as soon as possible to see if they can up this. Probably yes - but you never know.
But it's still wma. I don't like wma.

So look at your manual p30 & 31, in particular the 'recording' screens .. what do you see (and how come the real world doesn't match??). I guess maybe they have some optimising to do on the encoder, but I thought it was all basically similar to the I6, so they should be there by now .. unless they are trying to stretch the battery life by keeping the CPU speed way way down. 8<,
As for .wma, I think you are stuck with it. Maybe something to do with the ever increasing stupid royalties on MP3, or maybe just because .wma really is better at low bitrates (although the neatest 2-pass VBR encoders probably can't be used on voice/fm/etc. input recording anyway). Not a deal breaker for me, although the 200 folders / 2000 files may well be.

eXity, how is the development of the design? far as screen, controls and all go? do you think the iAudio 7s screen can or will collect dust inside of it? my F2 has this problem and there's nothing i can do as the F2 has no screws so i can't take it apart and clean the screen. what about the screen? bright sun light will still bother us users lol.
How's the video? The same as U3/F2?

The design is good IMHO. I can't really remember getting any dust inside my i6, but at least the i7 has scews on the back. It hasn't been sunny enough in Ireland to actually be able to expose the screen to full strength sunlight yet [wink]

Pretty much. I have never really understood the point of video on a 1.3'' display. Actually on anything under 2.5'' I don't really see the point. It's just painful on the eyes, with low detail and unreadable text ... [surrend]

I bought my iAudio 7 solely for listening to music but I've just watched 'Clerks 2' on mine & I was really surprised how great the picture was & how useable it was as a video viewer.
I'm definitely going to always have 3 or 4 new films on mine (800Mb AVI compresses to ~240Mb) to watch when I'm stuck on the train or in a hotel room [biggrin]

As long as you are happy mate - that's great! I'll integrate your opinion into my review somwhere.

eXity, would you say the i7 is a good choice rather then say the D2? i'm just so into the thing ever since i saw it after i bought my F2 but i'm more of a portable person (yes i know the D2 is quite small but hey, it's more towards video in my pinion and to that i look to it as a A2).
Well, if you are looking for something smaller than the D2, then the i7 is a good choice. It is a load better than the F2 - I never really enjoyed the whole dynamic matrix control scheme. Cowon should just let it die. The F2 is better than the F1, but the whole series could be binned and I wouldn't really care.
The buttons are too small for my big hands and all. Whereas the i7 has a much more consistent controls. The only thing that the i7 can't do well is zooming into photos with the controls - confuses me every time I use it.
The D2 is definitely the most versatile flash DAP Cowon has made. Followed very closely by the i7. But they are both supposed appeal to different audiences.
BTW: I hope you don't mind me editing your sig. It was a bit too long for my liking - I compressed it a bit for you.

the F2 wasn't all that bad. the sound quality is great and the controls don't really bother me as it only took me a few minutes to learn everything. the zoom feature i fine useless. images become pixels in just 2 zooms lol. recording is just awesome. OFF TOPIC: would you by any chance know how to find the default images for the F2? i would like to change the color to green, pink, or any other color rather then blue.

F2: Not a clue
D2: Not as far as I know, but then again some guys have ripped the firmware to pieces and replaced the whole gui so I don't really know. And there are some Album Art auto tagger programs out there somewhere. So I think it's a bit of a non issue to be honest with you. Doesn't bother me at all really. [smile]

[smile]actually that mod stuff is a problem. when new Firmware releases they have to go back and change some stuff around. i find it funny. why edit the GUI and stuff for such a player. i find it pointless. but hx for answering eXity.
once i get my next two paychecks i'll decide what to buy. either the i7 or D2

Finding them isn't a problem. Changing the firmware would be a problem since the player will reject it, most likely.
(unless you can remove it)
Yes you can.
