Hey guys, how've yall been doing? I finally got the q5...loving it!!![rolleyes]

but im really confused about this whole windows CE business...winCE is not windows Mobile or pocket PC isn't it? So applications made for windows mobile or pocket pc won't work? I've tried a few stuff but I've actually never owned a pocket pc, windows mobile or winCE device before so im pretty clueless.....

Can I install windows mobile onto windows CE given that (according to wikiped) WinMob is built on WinCE? Aaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I really want to use this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [cursing]

Also....Regarding wireless usb adapters...is there any way in making the Netgear WPN111 adapter work on the Q5 or do i have to buy an adapter that doesnt require a driver? Help would be much appreciated!

Once I get these sorted, I might post pictures and videos!

Firstly, what is your reason for wanting to replace Windows CE?

calcheese

well i cant seem to install anything on it and all applications seem to be made for either windows mobile or pocket pc... I would also like support for other office files other than .doc but i need to install windows CE professional plus but i cna't find that anywhere! aieeee...

Please don't use such vague thread titles in the future. "Someone help me please...." doesn't really tell anyone browsing the forums what your thread is about.

Thank you.

As far as I understand (please correct me if I'm wrong), the Q5 is not meant to be a pocket pc, or a mobile computer. It's primarily a Portable Media Player. All my sources seem to say that you won't be able to install any third-party software on it. Of course, this is purely based on speculation and my own intuition and I could be completely wrong. But I don't think it will be as easy as Click > Install > Done.

Perhaps if you could answer these questions we might be able to help you a little better:

How are you trying to install the software on it? Did the Q5 come with some kind of desktop application for transferring files/programs (like some special version of JetShell or something)? Or are you simply copying files onto the Q5 HD - because that might not work as far as installing programs. Have you have any luck installing ANY programs at all?

Also, the Q5 already has Windows CE Professional installed. I'm not quite sure what you mean by Windows CE Professional Plus (I can't seem to find reference to it anywhere).

Calcheese - congratulations on getting your Q5 - Can you confirm whether it has DVR? (direct recording form A/V sources)
Regarding wireless USB adapter - I believe you need a RNDIS adapter - see the following link: http://blogs.msdn.com/mikehall/archive/2006/02/28/540912.aspx
Alternatively if you can, then order one of the original USB adapter from Korea as illustrated in the COWON website - available at http://itempage.auction.co.kr/DetailView.aspx?ItemNo=A096184319&frm2=through

Right...

Doniago, thanks for the advice! I suppose I just figured that since it's already in the Q5 forum, it wouldn't be too bad but thanks for chaning the thread topic to something more useful.

Globex - thanks for rep[lying... in the settings menu it seems to have an Active Sync menu although I haven't yet tried it...I'm still trying to read up on this whole mobile Pc kinda thing...I hear you can install through Active Sync? Regards to the mobile PC thing...it has windows CE which you can access and it has Freecell and Solitair and you can write Word documents and set up networking and such...I think maybe they intended some sort of mobile PC usage even if it is minimal....

Windows CE Professional Plus is mentioned in the manual of the Q5...it says that to open other office documnets other than Word, you must upgrade to Windows CE Professional Plus...I can't find any other references to it either except in Korean websites...but even those people can't find where to buy and download winCE Pro Plus.....?

*Edit* - I have now tried to use the Active Sync and I've installed some random game for Windows CE and it has installed although the program windows need to be adjusted...(the whole program window isn't displayed)..

Pepepaco - thanks. I've had a flick through the manual and it doesn't mentione DVR features unfortunately..although the manual is (in true Cowon style) very very vauge and sparse on details..thanks for the info on wireless adapters....do you think it'd be possible to modify a driver for winCE so i can just use my WPN111 adapter? perhaps not.... eek.

Just one more question - Does your Q5 have the option of changing menu language to english?

calcheese
07-10-2007, 06:41
the q5 is windows CE based and has a "cowon launcher" program from which you can access all your files and such...the "cowon launcher" is multilingual, however winCE itself is in Korean...it does have multi-lingual support but i need to find it and download it to change it into English..

Regarding third party apps...I have downloaded a few..but it's diffficult to find applications for WinCE...

So far I have a few games, a paintpad, an office viewer, a separate mp3 player and also windows media player installed on it...It's really good! although i wonder if i should have waited a few more months to get the european one? oh well...

Where do you live calcheese, and does the GPS work there?

calcheese
07-10-2007, 14:54
i live in the UK...GPS is only available with the "Navigation Package" which has a GPS receiver on the dock rather than on the player...I'd imagine it would be the same for Worldwide releases. I didnt buy the Navigation Package and so can't use GPS.

Check http://www.hpcfactor.com/

It is the best site for windows ce users...

Are you saying that GPS isn't built into the device? That would be awful!

This device is all of a sudden looking overpriced, but we have to wait and see

I'm not really sure but I think you could install any kind of pocket pc software and they are so many :-)

http://www.hpcfactor.com/downloads/tcpmp/

this is the page where you could download the free tcpmp player 0.72beta

Thank you, enjoy with your q5 and do not hesitate to post any test or review . . . ;-)

Certainly in THIS (http://www.freewareppc.com/multimedia/tcpmp.shtml) download location it seems to indicate that it is compatible with Windows CE.

Holy shit. Does that mean the Q5 can read mkv thanks to tcmp? and a lot of subtitles formats? and h264?

This may just have convinced me to get one!

ps: can you also read real with this? http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=825

calcheese

i don't think that will work becuase it's made for ARM processors and teh q5 uses MPIS or something like that....i'll give it a go though.

StanRex

ok thanks,

real isnt that important though.

MKV support is really cool, and subs... ^^

You're wrong, TCPMP v0.72 works perfect on MIPS processors.

Chek "other downloads" in the tcpmp site and you'll see..

Hi :-)

TCPMP is really great, it supports mkv container with multi audio and video tracks but can not handle muti subtitle.

The only thing you could do is to read movie and beside put a subtitle smi filetext not srt with the same name :

totoro.avi with totoro.smi
totoro.mkv totoro.msi
and so on . . .
I do not know why this amazing sotware could support multi audio file and not subtitle ? ? ?
Could we test what is the flawlessness and smoothness of a mkv vid when we play with TCPMP . . .
Because with mine fresh axim dell x51v which is the best pda movie player I hardly watch a mkv : poor framerate, slown skips . . . ect

Thank you :-)

Oh and I forgot : with tcpmp 0.72rc1 and tcpmp subtitle (the only way to support subtitle unless you have a non official 0.81 ) with plugin you could play h264 or x264 . . .

Many mkv file contains aac audio tracks and x264/h264 vids tracks : it simply works with tcpmp but not flawlessy as I told it

StanRex

MKV is only a container. It won t affect smoothness of playback. It s the video codec of the video put in the container that will.

totoro
07-15-2007, 17:21
Yeah that's right and the resolution . . .

But most of the time mkv file contains the last video codec and audio codec available on the market : x264, aac, rv9 rv 10, ogg . . .
Simply the best to manage these codecs, with attached files, bonus, chapter . . . almost the same quality and easyness than a dvd :

chapter
muti audio
multi video sometimes
bonus
cover

Mkv . . . 'it kicks my ass' (as Cartman say :-)
