View Full Version : eXity has an X5 in hand!
Well guys,
I finally got my X5 too (bloody Australian Post) and here are my first comments:
Design:
Lovely - you don't even notice the hump in my opinion
Controls:
Work very well
Screen:
Very high quality - better than nearly every cell phone I have seen.
Video viewing:
Even though it's 15 FPS I think it is looks pretty good.
Photo viewing:
Works like a charm, but a little slow due to the HDD access times.
USB-OTG:
Works well, but seems slightly instable when making first connection. I am confident that these issues will be adressed in future Firmware upgrades
Build Quality:
Top notch except for the tiny USB-OTG cover
Sound Quality:
Good as ever
My only bigger gripe is that there is no id3-based browsing. Really Cowon should have implemented this feature by now if they want to get real big on the international market.
More comments will follow - please bombard me with questions ... now!

how is the navigation through huge lists of music?
Australian post isn't great in Sydney so.. in Queensland... :D
Can you view pics while listening to some music?
Is there a pouch/case included?
How is the picture quality, and can you compare it to the iRiver H3xx player's screen, the nearest competitor?
eXity,
I'd like to know how you would compare the X5 to your U2. I'm looking to buy a portable audio device (for casual listening and working out/running) and I'm still not quite sure that I should get a flash-based player rather than a HDD-based - particularly when the latter option has all the advanced features of the X5, such as movie viewing.
I love the look of the U2 (minimalist simplicity,) and it has all the features I am looking for in a small package, minus a user-replaceable battery. 1GB will be plenty for my needs, although it would definitely be cool to have an extra 19GB to use as portable data storage.
I know this thread is about the X5, not the U2 - but I think I am not alone in my struggle to find the best player to suit my needs. Would you still buy your U2 even though you have an X5 now?

first of all hello everybody!
here's my question:
if u skip to the next song does it take a long time to play the song? because i bought the iriver h 10 but i gave it back due to the long loading time of the songs. sometimes it even took up to 10 secs just to play the next song.
any answere would be very much appreciated!
roscoe - i have an X5 as well, and no, loading time is very fast!
Hey Guys...
Any chance of letting the rest of us know how to get our hands on one??
Cheers!

I received mine from a business contact in Korea who was gracious enough to purchase it for me and ship it to the U.S. Everyone will have a chance to own one soon when they are released worldwide.
Cheers for the info!! :o)
How the sound quality compare with M3??
I said: "good as ever". Which means as good as/better than the M3 - I haven't had enough time to test it extensivly.
To the person who asked about U2 version X5 - X5 all the way in my opinion. Too many more advanced features that the U2 does not have.
Navigation is extremely quick and efficient. Scrolling speeds up after a second or two while going through long lists.
It is not possible to view pictures and listen to music at the same time.
How did I get it: I work hard.
Hi, can you see the sleeve of the record when the music is playing ?
Thanks,
edouard

"It is not possible to view pictures and listen to music at the same time."
Edouard is talking about a different feature that some players have where it shows the album cover on the now playing screen.
I remember someone saying that it doesn't, but I'm not sure. I know the A2 will since I've seen it in the pictures.

I know but seeing as you can't view pictures at the same time as playing music why would it be able to view an album sleeve (which is a picture) while playing music?
Because it is not exactly the same thing. Viewing a picture would constitute loading up a file that is seperate from the song. Usually album art is put on the tag of the song, thus they load at the same time. Cowon really should implement this feature.
i would rather see proper ID3 tags before they do pictures and music at the same time.

eXity, where did you get the X5 from and why was Australia Post involved? Aren't you in Germany?
Did you get the 20GB or 30GB? Could you let me know about pricing/postage/insurance please and whether or not this is available to the rest of us regular consumers?
It's a review unit and I am in Oz for a whole year travelling around.
20 GB

You know that's a lie there is no gold at the gold coast or at least there wasn't when I was there :D
Tell me Excity if the USB
On The Go in X5 is 2.0 Full Speed or 2,0 High Speed (faster)?
Err... Can I get a review unit for my DAP review site? Er... "Fido's not made up on the spot DAP review"?
Tell me Excity if the USB

I'm sorry mate, but you have to learn to spell my name first before I answer questions.
Ok Exity :P
So... if the USB

How did I get it: I work hard.
But you got it for free! and knowing that 'free' review copies/units of anything come with strings attached, I know iAudio wouldn't be very happy if you said that the X5 was crap, you have to say its good no matter what or they'll stop sending you review units so how do we know you're unbiased? ;)

Apologies if this was a one-liner, and not a serious comment, but over the last nine months since I began searching, and then got my M3, eXity has been very fair in his comments on all DAP players. This is as true with iAudio products as with others.
I understand the concept of the fact that there is a difficulty for a reviewer to be objective, but this is countered by the following:
1. Despite his youthful looks (unless the Avatar is not him), he appears to be an adult, and we adults can be objective - it's all about growing up.
2. He'd be found out pretty quickly when the product came to market, and his reputation here (and on DAPReview) would be lost/ignored.
3. He's never pulled any punches before and has been vocal about his criticisms of iAudio, and has actively helped and gathered information from Cowon - even explaining to them the shortfalls of missing an IDtag db. (Note: This seems to need more work ;) )
4. Cowon would not stop sending review units to average/poor reviews, as a) it's managed by their PR Company, who will have a dedicated budget, and b) they would be ignored in the press in the future if they took this approach. I appreciate eXity is not the Times, or a glossy magazine, but these forums are widely read and it would be a PR disaster to not send units for review on the basis of criticism.
Sorry, but as my wife's a journalist who gets "sent stuff to try", I often get this and it annoys me immensely.
beatchef: Our track record at DAPreview (parent site of iAudiophile) speaks for itself. :)
We have some of the most detailed and honest reviews you're going to find. Personal opinion is always a factor of course but we write what we mean and that's that. We're not paid to write advertisements and there's no strings attached. Free product is part of the business but more often than not we have to send the review units back. Most of the players I've reviewed were actually bought (big companies are often too slow to wait for, if you want the _scoop_). Anyway, it takes a lot of work to thoroughly test these things and then do a formal write-up. Some of mine have taken over 40 hours.
How did I get it: I work hard.

Thanks Austin and En_croute for defending me on this one but I would like to ad my own comments to what has already been said.
Basically, yes - of course I would be slightly biased if I run a site called iAudiophile.net, but this does not make me blind. If something is not good about the player then I will say it (like the missing id3 database, stability problems with USB-OTG, the not very dynamic playlists etc.)
I will be as honest as I possibly can be and will give the unit the mark it deserves. No more and no less.
But up till now in my book the X5 scores extremely high. The interface is beautiful, the browsing is great, video playback, USB-OTG etc etc etc.
Read the review in a weeks time or so and see that I have to say about the player.
Ok Exity :P
So... if the USB
On The Go in X5 is 2.0 Full Speed or 2,0 High Speed (faster)?
It's eXity actually but I will let you off the hook on this one.
I'm not quite sure what the speed is to be honest, but I will try and find out and add this benchmark in a part of my review.

I feel so touched En_croute - thanks a lot! And the avartar is me.
Have another few pics of me right here (I'm such a show-off):

Sorry if this has been asked, but due to all the compatability issues with cameras, can a card reader work in the usb slot? Obviously not ideal, but if it works ....

I've already answered that question man! No.

Every once in a while this happens. Someone replies to a post that was buried in the past. In this case the last post to this thread was 04/28/05, about 3 and a half months old. Then Bob came along and added a post as if the conversation were still going on. This has got to be a uniquely internet type of interaction and it always makes me curious. Did the person who added on the last post realize how old it was? DId they know and not care? Why add something to the post at all especially something like what Bob wrote which, while fine, doesn't really add anything of value to the thread. And why the heck did Bob even see this thread, was he scanning through all the old stuff? Maybe he did a search for a user or a key word and just didn't notice how old it was.
It just always makes me curious.
