Now the people at Cowon America said they don't have any information on an "X7", but they don't seem to be the most informed people anyway, considering the D2 went on sale 4 weeks before they said it would, so I take their information with a grain of salt.
However, check out a comment left by TheWeirdOne over at DAPreview:

as you can tell, he works for AMP3, and he says his information points towards a close release of an X7...hmmmm.
Anyway, I'm getting tired of my Zune. Battery is abysmal, though the sound is good, and no clock or anything really is rather frustrating. I think I'll give Cowon until September to release something. If not, my money will unfortunately be going elsewhere.
How about you guys?
Yeah, me too. I wasn't really thinking about the X7, because I was still very happy with my M3L. But unfortunately, my M3L got stolen last week. Now a really want a new DAP. I'm sure the X7 will be awesome and a great successor to my trusty M3L. I hope they'll come with a releasedate soon, so that I could focus on that. Otherwise, I have to go for another player. The problem is that there isn't really a perfect successor for my M3L (only another M3L, but they're long out of production, and I'm not a fan of second hand. The Samsung YH-J70 was also nice, but also out of production). There's the iPod, the Archos 404, the Zen Vision:M and the X5(L). The X5L is still the best option, but it's just old and still expensive. The others all have their own drawbacks (codec support, battery life, no UMS etc.), so I hope a X7L arrives soon.
It's not driving me mad at all. I just bought an X5L in full knowledge that it was being discontinued, because I had no idea when Cowon was going to bring out the X7, and the X5L fit my needs just about perfectly. I'm enjoying the freedom from DRM and the ability to play ogg files, and I love the drag-and-drop file management, so simple and yet so seemingly hard to find. It's a ways away from perfect--a more robust joystick would be nice--but I'm quite happy with my purchase and can wait awhile for its replacement.

I concur with Rockin Amigo.
My X5 30gig was great. Even better with Rockbox dual boot. However, I just like buying Iaudio things (i know, a bad habit). And I am dying to see a good DAP.
It just seems to me that DAP's have grown stagnent. There doesn't seem to be anything exciting out. The Zune is more a piece of crap (sorry Amigo) and the way Microsoft decided to PAY record companies just makes me angry.
Creative players and Ipods aren't cutting it either.
It is too bad that Iriver got out of the HDD DAP's. I had a Iriver H300 and it was great, although it did have a lot of faults.
The X7 is something for me to get excited for.

I don't think the Zune is all bad. It's certainly not the worst DAP I've owned, but it's by no means the best either. It has good sound, I enjoy ID3 interface, the GUI is nice, build quality is excellent, but that's about it. I would not go out of my way to recommend it to anyone, yet I don't think you should knock it until you've had one.
i probably wouldn't have one except I got a great deal for it.
I'm exited about it coming out....I've owned 4 cowon's now but they are all flash players...never owned a Hard Drive based unit...all except a Zune for a few days...
But I can wait...I'm in love with my D2...the longer I own it the more I like it..[smile]
You never know, they could be playing it safe and keeping everyone in the dark while they build/test/and implement all these excellent features and get the fw right to the point that everything works well. then one day suddenly BAM! Cowonglobal, America, and korea website is updated, and it is announced the "X7" is ready to be shipped to retailers for sale within a few weeks.
Ha ha, ya right, i wish.

Isn't the iPhone getting released today, I'm sure there will be plenty of hype/excitment around for a while [wink] [rolleyes]
But seriously the iPhone maybe a reason that they are a few delays with releases of various products as it will likely be an ongoing cover story item in major review/vedors.

I've had mine for 2 years, and I still agree with you on every point. I am happy with my x5l, and there is no need to replace it.
I will place my bet that once again iAudio will make the best player, and it will be ignored. The make/break on the x7 will be how they handle DRM. I don't want to deal with DRM, and hopefully we won't have to.

I am reminded of the advice someone once gave me 'you get what you put up with'. If users refuse to put up with DRM cr&p then the music publishers WILL stop trying to inflict it (just like you don't see many insanely protected CDs any more .. go back 10 years and that nonsense was everywhere).
The only people it inconveniences are real paying customers. The ripoff artists and Chinese clone works don't even get slowed down. I won't have a DRM track on my PCs, and I sent back several 'CDs' for not meeting the red book standards (and emailed the publishers and artists to tell them why) .. there is more music than anyone can listen to in one lifetime anyway. Probably even 'more GOOD music'.
