Well just as the title states, lets have a bit of a genre talk! What kind of music do you guys listen to mainly? No i dont want answers like "ya everything," ive had people say that and found that they only mean "everything to do with punk, or rap" haha!
So ya lets discuss different genres of music and what you guys like to listen to!
Ill give my own input once i see some people posting :p dont wanna write somethin for nothing! Haha

My favorite bands are a mixed bag, so I'll just say that I dislike the country music genre.
Current Favorite Bands:
The Dirty Projectors
Interpol
Hedningarna
Broken Social Scene
Mostly Rock. Well actually pretty much all of my music is rock but all different types and hardly any pure rock. Punk Rock, Pop Rock, Indie Rock.

It took about five to ten minutes. Anyway, I think all the artists I listen to deserve equal mention. Give some of them a listen. I doubt you'll be dissapointed.
I've really started getting into free jazz and avant garde jazz, like Sun Ra (really trippy stuff), Charles Mingus, as well as other artists like John Coltrane and Thelonius Monk. I've been listening to di.fm's modern jazz stream a lot lately (via streamripper).

Who will really read these endless lists?
I rather listen to some good and solid jazz (instrumental, free and vocal), soul (old and neo soul) and garage/deep house...and I'm too lazy to create endless lists of names most of you may never have heard about :-)

And for that they've invented the ls commando ... i mean dir commando :)
but you are right, nobody really gives a shit about what tunes someone else is listening, as long as they play their tunes on a cowon powered system, right?

well i read some peoples lists just to see what kind of stuff they listen to! And thats the number one way of finding new great bands and stuff that are out there by looking at what other people listen to ...
EllenIaudio
10-23-2004, 15:43
I also like the lists! Especially if I see that someone likes the same music as I do (aha, bjork, twarres, doe maar). This invites me to seek for the other bands mentioned and even to join soulseek! Now I have to find out how I can get this soulseek thing working...

For showing off your collection/tastes online, www.rateyourmusic.com is a good way to do so!
And it seems like a lot of people like "everything but country," and I've also heard those who say they like "everything but rap/hip-hop," but, though I'm not a big fan of either genre, I've found that there's something good in both.
I don't listen to much country, but I am a listener of Will Oldham, aka Bonnie 'Prince' Billy, and I also have a fun CD with country covers of Disney songs! And the soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Though?" is pretty good. When people say they don't like country, it's often that they judge the entire genre on the basis of the commercial output, and I find that in genres I really wouldn't say I like there's still something good to be found -- it's just that I haven't found it yet.
And when it comes to my own tastes, I listen mostly to newer alternative music. A few favourite bands and musicians are:
* The Flaming Lips [Newer material!]*
* Hefner *
* Jonathan Richman *
* Daniel Johnston *
* The Unicorns *
* Will Oldham *
Vlad Tepes Drac

ya the O Brother Where Art Thou soundtrack is probably the only really country stuff that i like! That movie was brilliant and "I am a man of constant sorrow" is a sweet song :P
*still trying to find a good way to get a list of all the mp3 folders on my iaudio* hmm

Well just as the title states, lets have a bit of a genre talk! What kind of music do you guys listen to mainly? No i dont want answers like "ya everything," ive had people say that and found that they only mean "everything to do with punk, or rap" haha!
-Vlad
I just had to quote this, because it is so true.
I say 'ya everything' too, but I'd like to think I say it because I believe it, haha. Plus its hard to tell other people the various music I like without annoying them. Which I am about to do here!
In terms of Rock music, I really, really enjoy
Hardcore and metalcore, such as converge.
post-hardcore/post-punk such as q and not u.
kraut-rock such as Can and Neu.
Post-rock such as GYBE!, tortoise, slint.
Indie-rock such as Guided by voices.
Math-rock. I know I listen to this, but I still dont know what it is!
I listen to other types of rock more casually
per instance, classic rock, goth-rock, alternative, ect
Listen to hip-hop when I can, don't be fooled, this is a wonderful genre.
UK hip-hop such as the streets and dizzee rascal.
Underground hip-hop, way too many to name.
I'm a heavy, heavy electronica listener.
IDM, is one of my favorite genres of electronica of all time. Boards of canada, and plaid are some favorites.
Jungle/Drum n' bass, I know this one the best, Listened to it for years now.
Industrial - I don't know this one as well, but I think its a great, often ignored genre.
Trip-hop - I listen whenever I feel like it
Much respect for all the other genres, trance, uk garage, hardcore and happy hardcore, house, I wish I could listen to these genres more.
Reggae- Reggae is awesome. steel pulse, toots & maytals, and I love U-roy.
Classical music - the only type I listen to is 20th century minimalist classical music, I suspect when I get older I'll dig classical music more. Steve Reich is a must to check out.
Jazz - i think thelonious monk would be my favorite, but I don't listen to as much jazz as i would like to. It's to hard to get into, there are so many different types. However, the bad plus is a very good modern jazz band.
country is not bad at all, I don't listen to it much. but I like alt-country such as neko case, wilco, blue rodeo, ect. I don't understand why people dislike it so much.
avant-garde, brammus mentioned the shaggs, who definitely fit in this category. I don't listen to this genre, but i've heard alot about it. Truely for the musically open-minded. I'd listen to it, but the CDs are way to expensive.

I'm getting confused. I met a boy who's really into indie and I'm starting to like my rave stuff less. Not that I like the indie stuff much either! So I don't know what's happening. Paradigm shift, I suppose. I still love trance and dnb... I just get bored of it a little easier now! :P *dislikes this confusion*
My favourite genres are metal (especialy powermetal), rock and Dutch music.
My favourite artists are Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius and Bruce Springsteen.

What is Dutch music?
Sorry but as a German I have no idea what our neighbours have as their own actual music. I have to admit that this is a general problem here in Germany. We always look up to "big" countries like the UK, the States or perhaps France but forget about the culture of our "smaller" neighbours. (Sorry for my half philosophical digression.)

Good stuff, here; glad to see alot of you M3 users are musically inclined; most people I see carring around a DAP ofter have a poor taste in music... also use the stock headphones (bleh!).

Tinuviel. I used to listen to trance and dnb 24/7. I used to own gigs of trance and jungle mp3s, used to spin dnb, I visited those websites 24/7. I've moved on since then. Do I still love trance and Dnb? Heck yeah! Dnb is one of my favorite genres, and it really is the most overlooked genre today. Don't be afraid to try other styles, especially Indie because Indie is awesome. I'm not saying its a bad thing at all to listen to only trance and dnb. I don't blame you for it, they are awesome. But you'd be fooled to think they are the only good genres out there. There is alot of awesome music out there, too much for me to keep up with.

I don't know about Germany today, but back in the 60's/70's Germany had that same problem that you describe. It wasn't until Kraut-rock came out that things started to change, and drastically did they change! Germans were pratically the pioneers of kraut-rock, and I really like bands like can, neu, faust, and tangerine dream. You can't forget Kraftwerk, the german band considered the grandfathers of 'dance music'.
If you look to alot of other important bands, they claim influence from these artists.
I'm korean, and really, korean music is a derivative of all other music. Nothing ground-breaking at all. I like it though

I mean music singed in the Dutch language (I didn't know how to say that :))
Artists like Acda & de Munnik, Blof, Frank Boeijen and Van Dik Hout. Those are my favourites.
But I guess that you've never of those before :D

Oh, hey, for sure! It's just I'm so used to judging a song by how it sounds now, that I don't give the indie stuff much of a chance if I don't like the sound right away... I dunno, a lot of just annoys my ears, if that makes sense!
I do like other genres - celtic, pop, slow rock, classical etc. It's just this indie stuff is mostly new to me, or it sounds like all alternative, that I'm a little... well... tipped off balance with it I guess! hehehe :) Definitely will continue to give it a chance though.

Piggen, exactly, I didn't heard their names before, but that's why I asked. Sort of getting to know new or other artists. Like very few ppl here know Cees Noteboom or Leon de Winter for their literature, I like them very much, though. ;)

Pretty much J-Pop and Electronica for me. Although, J-Pop really does include many more styles/genres than people give it credit for.
Old skool rock and roll. Led Zeppelin all the way!
Electronica...indie rock...ambient
Actually my favourite artists for more than three decades are Steely Dan! Aja is their best album.

I'm not a rap-fan but I think De La Soul is great. Other hornhonkers I forgot or were already mentioned.

Ska & Punk
I preety much love all ska (Jamaican SKA, ska-jazz, 2-tone, Ska-punk, etc...)(with many exeptions on most of the 3rd wave ska bands)
Punk in it's original form (end of the 70's, early 80's), hate new-punk (Those guys that play realy fast pop-rock with a girly voice, with crappy lyrics)
Don't like Hardcore.
Don't like those new Reggae bands, like patrice, and all those other guys.
Hate Hip-Hop (sorry!)
I like some Oldies, back from the days where music had more to it than a Teen with oversided tits, undersized clothes doing playback on stage... (Not that there's anything wrong with it....for a poster... )
If had to choose 1 genre -Ska
More specific.... 2-Tone SKA

Ska is good, can you recommend some of your favourite bands/songs to me? I'm always looking for new artists cause the world of music is too huge for one person to know all about. So most of my music comes from recommend's :P
As you probably now in every genre there's a ton of variations!
Just gonna write up groups from diferents type of ska, that should be easy for you to find!
Name of the band - Short comment - Recomended musics
The Specials-They Praticly created 2-tone (Rude Boy's outa jail, nite club, Enjoy yourself...)
Bad Manners-Great Live Albums also 2-tone (Sally Brown(live), This is SKA(live), feel like jumping(live), etc... as long as it's live!)
Toasters- A more recent 2-tone. (Running right trough the world, Underground Town, So long buck, Matt Davis, ....)
Pietasters- Great new band (Factory(live), Maggie Mae, Metro, Pietaster, Drinking & Driving, ...)
Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra- If you like instrumentals! (All or Nothing , The Pirates, Pedorazu(live), .....)
Skatallites- The ones who created ska Jamaican-ska (Gun's of navarone, everything else is good though, specialy the instrumentals..)
Madness- English 2-tone chart busters (ONE STEP BEYOND, Night boat to cairo, ....)
Catch 22- 3rd wave ska (Keasby nights, 1234, 9mm and a 3 piece suit, ....)
Big Bad Voodoo Daddy- great musicality, relaxing, if you like jazz start by these guys (Fire, Jumpi'n Jack, Machine gun, ...)
Mad Caddies- Another 3rd wave (monkeys, etc...)
Suicide machines- And Another 3rd wave
These should all be easy to find, if anyone want's more of a certain type, just let me now, and i'll seed anything!:jamming:

Like many, I listen to a lot of different genres, but mostly the Rock category. But my taste within that ranges from Classic Rock (Led Zep, Pink Floyd, etc.) to however you would classify the Gorillaz, Korn and SOAD, with a little of everything in between. Green Day is my favorite ATM. American Idiot is flat out brilliant...or at least not bad from a guy who doesn't have the greatest singing voice  ....
I don't like much hip-hop, but Jurassic 5 and De La Soul are faves. But vintage R&B like early James Brown or Big Bill Broonzy (Yeah, Google that!) or Ray Charles' Atlantic recordings are excellent.
Female jazz vocalists like Ella Fitzgerald, Norah Jones, Diana Krall....make a BBD melt under the 'phones.....
I hate "pop" country (you know who you are!:tongueu: ), but love very traditional, old country artists like Hank Williams & Patsy Cline. I also really love traditional country (which I think would qualify as "alt-country" now) like Dwight Yoakam (do yourself a favor and get his acoustic CD.... How do you spell muy excellente'? Yeah: Dwight Yaokam Acoustic.net.) Uncle Tupelo (early formation of Wilco...sort of....) are incredible, too....
Others: Pre-Fat/Vegas Elvis, Kasabian, Beastie Boys (true hip-hop, BTW), Beck, the Levellers, Rage Against the Machine.... Geez, I could go on....
One of my favorite things to do is use "shuffle all," esp. on my 20GB.... Then I might hear Patsy Cline's heartbreaking "I Fall to Pieces" followed by Tool's "Prison Sex" with an encore of Dwight Yoakam's accoustic version of "Little Sister" with a bit of Stevie Ray Vaughan's "Little Wing" or possibly Hendrix.... I like the jarring juxtapositions, though it embarrases me sometimes too....
BBD
Im indian, so im a bhangra fanatic. But I got tons of everything such as oldies of the Beatles and Bee Gees to Pink Floyd, Tupac, DMX, Eminem and many remixes and instumentals. So much music that I cant remember them all.

new wave, ska, dub, rok
Mostly Rock, a bit of Metal an nü (new)-metal aswell. Besides those ? Not much I guess.
I listen to A LOT of genres. Mainly I listen to Metalcore/Hardcore/Deathcore but I listen to a lot of Jazz, too. When I started to listen to Jazz I immediatly started to listen to Funk/Disco music because of the great basslines (I play bass). Then I started to listen to Daft Punk what made me love some kind of electronic music. And there are a few Hip-Hop artist I really like.
So here are a few artist I listen to:
Metal:
- War From A Harlots Mouth
- As BLood Runs Black
- Architects
Jazz:
- Chick Corea
- E.S.T
Electro:
- Daft Punk
- M83
Hip-Hop (sometimes, because its fun to listen to):
- Kanye West
- DMX
- K.I.Z.
Rock:
-Coldplay
And someone probably every man listens to: Barry White :D
Edit: I missed Jamiroquai. That's propably my favourite band.
I listen almost everything BUT hip hop. The "yo!" thing is not for me.
Mainly MPB - brazilian popular music - since i'm brazilian. :D
