View Full Version : Any convertors for Real Media Videos?
Hi,
I tried Badak, CinemaForge, iRiverter and MediaCoder. I can't get any of these to convert .rm files to D2 .avi or .wmv [blink]
Does anybody have any other suggested programs to try?
thanks,
BTW, I've had very little problems converting .mpg, .wmv or .avi with the jetAudio convertor.
Try Streambox Ripper (http://www.geocities.com/streamboxripper/items/Streambox_Ripper.zip) [biggrin]
Nice program. But, am I missing something?
I don't see any options for video. It looks like an audio only program. Although, it did convert a RealVideo .rm file to an audio file which is kind of neat.
Thanks for your suggestion,
I use
mediacoder (http://www.mediacoder.cn/index.htm)
to convert rm to avi. It's a free converter which is highly customizable.

Thanks Haydn,
I haven't been having any luck with MediaCoder, but your suggestion inspired me to dig in and learn this program. Let me just say this program is not for sissies [wink] and now I see it is very powerful.
I found a post on the medicoder forum that did the trick: mediacoder forum link (http://mediacoder.sourceforge.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=477&highlight=rm)
Someone here suggested to download the Real Alternative Codec (http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Real_Alternative.htm)
I did, and after alot of experimenting with settings it works. YAY!!! [biggrin]
I have some really nice vintage jazz videos in .rm format. The audio is just a tiny bit out of synch, but the originals are too. Maybe one day I'll spend some more time on them. I'm just sooo happy to have Parker & Dizzy, Miles & Coltrane, etc... on my little D2... I'm jammin' :jamming:
Thanks again,
After much experimentation, I think I've finally come up with some stardard settings to convert .rm videos to D2 videos.
The files I have are all originally RV30 encoding.
In MediaCoder, I choose 128kps for video, LAME 128kps ABR for audio, Xvid format, AVI container, and FFMPEG as the backend.
These settings reliably converted all my .rm vids. Some of the vids will play back fine after just the MediaCoder conversion. Most will not. So, instead of fooling around checking to see which ones work, after MediaCoder, I run them through the jetAudio Video Convertor. So far, after jet conversion every vid works. [biggrin]
One more thing I'd like to add is file size. MediaCoder will add about 10% to the file size. Then jetVideo, with Normal Default AVI, will add another 20-30% file size. This kind of stinks. So a typical 10MB file could end up around 14-15MB. Actually, it's not THAT bad. But the quality goes down a little from the original because I'm encoding it twice.
I didn't get a D2 for the video, but now I must admit, it's really cool [cool]
hope this helps,
omjeremy

Does Super work? You can get it here. (http://www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html)
thanks for the suggestion omjeremy.
Looks like a nice program, but I just tried it with similar settings to MediaCoder and when I played the video it froze my D2.
When I shut it off and turned it back on, my SD card was not recognized. Shut it off and on again and the card recognized. Very weird [wacko] I've never had this happen. I think I'll stick with MediaCoder for now.
Thanks again,
Robosax, i use MediaCoder for all my conversions for PC including rm to avi, but like u said, the end result is often not playable in D2. Then i use jetaudio, iriverter etc. to convert to D2 version. I am happy with this because I also want a bigger than D2-size version on my computer.
Among other things, I have downloaded quite a bit of MIT_OCW lectures in rm format and converted to them to avi. I can now watch Lewin's famous physics courses on D2. [biggrin]
I actually use MediaCoder for DVD ripping, music file conversions etc. It is a very powerful tool when you get hang of it. MediaCoder forums are very helpful like you said.
I don't have RealPlayer but only Real Alternative in my computer. So I can confirm that it works with Real Alternative codecs but I have no idea about realplayer codecs.
By the way, you and I seem to be using the same settings.
Enjoy your MediaCoder.
