View Full Version : Windows CE - Can Someone Explain More?
Well, I am dissapointed that cowon chose Windows CE 5.0 and not some form of linux, (Microsoft is popular in Korea) but there must be some advantages! I have a few questions regarding Windows CE.
1. I understand that Windows Mobile, Pocket PC, and Smartphone are all based on Windows CE. Does that mean I can install all the apps that work with those three on Windows CE?
2. Should I expect to be able to edit Office documents on the Q5?
3. What about programs from like windows xp, 2000, 98 etc. I doubt they are combatable but I could be wrong.
Thanks!
1. Unknown at this time. At least I don't have any sources that would confirm or deny this. But my instincts tell me that you will not be able to install 3rd party software on the Q5.
2. Yes. You will be able to open Office documents on the Q5. Unfortunately it is MS Office and not OpenOffice, however.
3. Any other Windows platform will not run on the Q5 based on the fact that the processor is not compatible with other Windows platforms.
Theres an emulator you can download to simulate how it works

If this is true, it would be a very stupid decision from Cowon. And I really hope this is not true. Cowon has got a good reputation for not making any obstructions for users.

I don't think that Cowon will close off the Q5 to other software. Not only would it be stupid on Cowon's part, but it's probably impossible to do so.

But Microsoft does...
I dunno. We'll just have to wait and see.

Of course, just see MorphGear Emulator running nicely on Cowon Q5 [thumbsup]

The only app I really 'need' to install is TomTom Navigator 6. I know it runs perfectly on Windows Mobile, so I really HOPE it can be installed on CE5 as well.
If this is not possible, I might as well buy a TomTom instead and let the Q5 pass by (as I already have an A2)
Are there no Asian Q5 users out here who can confirm? :jamming:

ouch. i just tried some web browsing with IE on that emulator (800x480 res) and stuff looks horrible. menu bars on loads of sites (ms included) are expanding downwards so you've gotta scroll halfway down a page to find any decent content. strangely cowon.com was the only site that looked ok. hope it's not like this on the real thing [no]
Try Opera: It's a much better browser or small portable machines (and larger ones to actually!)

Ive used Opera on a umpc and its the easiest way to browse when your limited by on on screen keyboard, once you set up your sites and passwords its great, fitting the page to the screen size is so handy.

As an owner of a Korean Q5 - I thought it would be a problem having wince 5.0 in Korean (Korean is like Dutch to me). In fact it doesn't really matter because there is not much you can do with Windows CE 5.0, especially because the COWON Q5 has a MIPS processor, for which there are very few applications available. The only interesting applications I have managed to find and install so far are TCPMP and Total Commander.
wouldnt one of those version of opera work on the Q5 :

?
from what I understand, windows mobile 5 is Ce 5.0 with dot net.
So maybe it would work?

Shouldn't CE 5.0 support the .Net 2.0 Compact Framework? I'd be disappointed if I couldn't write applications for the Q5 using that.
