COWON Q5
http://product.cowon.com/product/images/COWONQ5/img/cowon_q5/photo/list/q5_list01.jpg
The COWON Q5, a premium portable multimedia player (PMP), has an ultra high quality 5-inch widescreen LCD display with 16 million colors, and it is a next generation convergence PMP that not only can play movie clips and music but also has features including GPS navigation with an embedded Mando Mappy MXG, terrestrial DMB, encyclopedia Brittanica, and external wireless LAN support functions.
The unit features a simple yet luxurious black metal body and has a wing click GUI to remove buttons from the front side. Built with user convenience in mind, its compact design is outlined with a slim wrap around the screen.
The COWON Q5 runs the Windows CE 5.0 Professional OS powered by the AMD Alchemy 500Mhz CPU from AMD, and is not only capable of being a highly sensitive DMB receiver, but is also capable of playing various files with video format support that includes AVI (Divx, Xvid), ASF, WMV 7/8/9 and MPG, along with audio format support for MP3, OGG, WMA, WAV, ASF, and FLAC (a lossless compression codec). Moreover, it supports popular image file formats such as JPG, BMP, PNG and more. Through strong earphone output at 68mW, people can experience COWON's uniquely subtle and strong Jet effects including BBE, Mach3Bass, MP Enhance, 3D Surround, Bass, and Treble, as well as listening with the external 2 watt stereo speaker.
The COWON Q5 includes Encyclopedia Britannica to allow users to easily search useful information. The Korean version of the Q5 also includes an e-dictionary combining YBM Sisa's e4u English to Korean and Korean to English dictionary, Chambers 21st Century Dictionary, and a Korean language dictionary. It is speculated that the US/Europe version of player will include some form of a dictionary as well (it is unknown at this time which dictionary it will be, if any).
The COWON Q5 has strengthened additional features with support for ManView that enables image viewing without extracting compressed files and ChekView, a text viewer, that facilitates viewing Word and Excel documents for presentations with the WinCE based Office Viewer. Besides the wired/wireless remote control, head set, TV output, DMB recording and USB host support, it also includes basic functions such as voice recording, FM radio and more. With its UCI (User Created Interface), users can decorate it with personalized GUIs to express themselves directly through the device.
The COWON Q5 will be available in two HDD capacity variations, 40GB and 60GB. Its internal battery is capable of up to 13 hours of audio playback and 7 hours of continuous video or terrestrial DMB playback.
GPS Navigation:
The COWON Q5 comes with an add-on Navigation Package which has an added navigation cradle with a highly sensitive GPS receiving module and the premiere Korean high resolution mapping solution - Mando Mappy MXG.
At this time (June 2007), it is speculated that the the GPS Navigation features will not be included in the US/Europe version of the player. It is unknown whether or not these feature will be removed entirely, or replaced with something else. There is some speculation that the US version will use GPS Car Navigation (Optional) from Tele Atlas premium digital map data of the continental United States featuring text-to-speech technology and 11 million POIs (points-of-interest).
USB Hosts and other Plug-in Devices:
The COWON Q5 is scheduled to support various USB based communication services. It is unknown whether or not the Q5 will support plugin USB storage hosts.
WIFI & Bluetooth:
The WIFI capabilities of the Q5 are still unknown. It isn't clear whether or not the WIFI will be built-in or come separately as a USB dongle. The Korean version of the player (based on pictures on the official website) currently uses a WIFI dongle.
TV Receiver:
The US/Europe version of the Q5 will not come with DMB or any TV Receiver. A lot of people are hoping that the TV receiver will be replaced by a built-in version of WIFI.
Release date:
The Cowon Q5 was released in Korea in mid-May 2007 and it has been confirmed that the US and Europe some be released some time in late summer of 2007.
Based on numerous sources and contact with Cowon directly, it is safe to say that the Q5 will be available in US and Europe by the end of September. www.mygadget.dk already has the Q5 available for pre-order and says it will ship October 1st.

Yep, good job pulling the data together. I'm not impressed with the runtime though - this dude has 2x the battery capacity of an X5L (roughly) and only about 1/3rd the run time (for audio). The weight is pretty significant too. Definitely not for me. 8>.
Until the Us and Eur version is released its all speculation
Until the Us and Eur version is released its all speculation
That's not necessarily true. A lot of the things we know for certain already just because of the nature of the player. And we can make some pretty good predictions about the rest of it.
Hi at all
I've been watching the Q5 for months now and it looks to me like the perfect video player. I had an A2 and even if the display was only 4" I enjoyed it a lot. Mostly because of the long battery life for movies. I know a guy from Korea, from who I bouht 1.5 years ago an I-station V43. I absolutely felled in love with the touchscreen. So my question is, does anybody know if the Q5 can be switched to English language? If so I would get one immediatly as I'm searching for a nice video player for the holidays. So if anyone knows it please let me know.

i'm guessing because it's windows CE, you will have to reinstall an english windows CE into the device...but i will confirm once i get the player!
I was just browsing through the manual and it says that you must upgrade WinCE with a pack (?) to WinCE Professional Plus to enable the office viewer. Out of the box, the office viewere (ie for .doc, .ppt, excel files) is not included.
and it seems that you will be able to install various programs suitable for winCE but im getting confused between this whole WINCE and Windows Mobile thing... ?

Your safest bet, of course, is to wait for the US release. Which seems like it should be in about a month or so.
Do we know if it has a true line out? (not on the dock) so it can be used with a portable amp?
I'm not sure. You might want to take a look at these images:

Anyone know what sort of TV output it will have...S-video?..Component?..HDMI?...or just a composite?
Looking at : http://download.cowon.com/review/COWONQ5/pmpinside/review_q5_05.jpg
I think it's S-video. However, I don't know Korean so I can't confirm it based on the text.

Ok thanks globex...
Hello,
Do you know if the Q5 will have a remote control line in option?
The Q5 comes with a remote control. I'm not sure what you mean by "remote control line in option".
A remote control which will take command the Q5 without the walkman take out of this pocket.
sorry I'm french, so my english is not very good.
Je ne comprends pas vraiment ce que tu demands.
Le Q5 a un remote comme dans ce photo:
http://download.cowon.com/review/COWONQ5/pmpinside/review_q5_05.jpg
Mais il n'y a pas de remote qui peut etre connecte directement (je crois).
I think i remember a seeing a picture withe a in-line controller but you have to buy it seperately

globex, now that I look at the picture link more closely....if that cable rolled up is the lineout cable...it is possible it may have a component output...it looks like if you look closely there are 5 rca plugs...but the orange one is confusing...[confused]
I can't see a S-video plug on there...it would be nice if it was a component output..

Au fait je parlai d'une télécommande filaire, mais je ne trouve pas comment dire le mot filaire en anglais.
En gros c'est une petite telecommande qui reprendra toutes les touches du Q5
Yes you can get a line-in remote on the head phone cable, but you have to buy it as an extra.
In that photo, what is the circular thing just in front of the remote?

On the last picture...the blue, green and red rca cables ..they are usually "Component" video output colors...could it be that's what they are?? That would be nice because you'd get a much better picture on a HD tv set...better than and S-video...
Wow it does have Component output! That's awesome...I'll be able to hook it up to my High Definition Tv...with Component...
I have another question....Is the Q5 capable of playing vob. files??
Another question :-) Does korean people install everything on win ce 5 ? especially TCPMP that is so far the best media player to watch movies on PDA and because I want to watch my mkv movie files and choose audio tracks, subtitles, and even chapter . . .
Mkv container is cool and free, why no pmp that I know support this format ?
That's a shame . . . and houra to TCPMP :-)
That's all folks

Here are some pics of connnectors for q5
Can anyone tell if this is supporting DVR function?? The bottom connector was first understood as docking station connector. Now, with all these last pictures, it is the video out connector. What about video in? I also believe that this is not only about connections, but mainly about software application for the purpose. Any info on this?

I have read somewhere that the US/Europe version will have DVR - not sure about the Korean version - is the picture below "video capture" or only "screen snapshot"?
I believe it has DVR - as illustrated in the following picture as "video capture".
that looks like a screen capture function because live incoming video does not have a play position and play length at the bottom. Also it has the letters BMP that might refer to the type of file the capture is saved as.

Hey pepe, can you please give me the source website for these pictures?
Sure thing - the link is HERE (http://board.cowon.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=B04&page=1&sn1=&divpage=1&bmenu=B&sn=off&ss=on&sc=on&select_arrange=headnum&bmenu=B&desc=asc&no=105&bmenu=B) - connector pics about half way down the page.
I believe I read that it was supporting DVR and seeing these pictures came up to my mind that yes, based on the DMB function. So, the questions still is if there will be support for DVR without the DMB function, since this is useless in EU/USA. The A2 has this recording function for TV-IN from TV. The big advantage (I think it would work) is that you can record encoded cable channels from the TV, where the signal is decoded [excited] . Or is it going to support DVB-T and have the DVR function from this?
I'm setting the release date as confirmed for end of August or early September. If it turns out that it gets delayed again - I give everyone here permission to blame me and send me bomb threats. [biggrin]
what i dont get about cowon is why they are not supporting AAC or m4a?
what i dont get about cowon is why they are not supporting AAC or m4a?
Probably because of license fees. And IMHO there is no need to support such formats. You have support for Ogg Vorbis which has higher quality and is free.

I (personally) have never found a need to store my music in anything other than MP3. The fact that COWON supports a bunch of other formats is great, but I don't understand why people would be using them in the first place. They don't offer better quality sound... the compression isn't that much better... so what is the reason?
FLAC offers much better quality sound than mp3, since it is lossless.

I wouldn't go that far. Depends on the your bitrate. Back in the day when I used to be a head-fi nut, there were endless debates about the SQ of MP3 vs Lossless. Ive done my fair share of A/B testing, and to me VBR Lame is 99.9% of FLAC. What reall makes the difference are the headphones you use.
Of course that doesn't stop me from using FLAC. if you have the storage space, and you don't like the thought of losing part of your music, then do it. I store in FLAC on my desktop and then convert to MP3 for my audio player

it's not on the front page, but is there (speculated) pricing for the Q5? I might be interested in purchasing one, as it seems to be the messiah of PMPs.

last we heard was us$500 for 40gb and $550 for 60gb
Lets hope that archos new generation will make cowon bring this in cheaper

i hope so. i mean, this thing is good, but i'm not spending that much on it.
It really isn't that expensive if you think about it. It's $300 for a regular mp3 player (X5 for instance). An extra $200 for huge lcd, touchscreen, wifi, and etc... I think the price is fair. You're practically buying a 5 inch laptop here.

Agreed! - Add the accessories such as Dock & plug ins to the base price of the Archos 605 and you're getting close to the Q5. Pity that the capacity is only 60GB - Archos are going 30, 80 and 160 GB!

Is this the standard touchscreen technology that's been used for years, or is it the newer development seen in projects by Microsoft, Apple (iPhone), etc? If anyone owns it, the basic question is: can it comprehend more than one external stimuli at once? Will I be able to place two fingers in different locations and move from there to create an effect? That's the new rage in touchscreen technology, and was just wondering if the Q5 utilized it. I'll be getting it regardless, but am really interested in what the exact touchscreen workings are. Thanks!
Michael
My guess is that it's the older touchscreen technology, but I can't confirm this.

Since nothing has been released yet about the specs, I realize that it is pure speculation, but does anyone know if the Q5 will be able to browse websites like YouTube or other Flash video sites? If so, what about other Flash-type websites (like the Halo3 website found here - http://www.halo3.com/)? I have been all through this thread and can't seem to find anything about it. Also, what about video streaming from a host computer? I have seen it discussed, but nothing from Cowon about it, just people saying "yea, it should", but it should do everything a normal computer does, but doesn't b/c of various quirks (i.e. processor, WinCE, etc).
EDIT - Also, does anyone know if the Q5 offers gapless audio playback? This is something that is a must for me and if it doesn't, I'll be getting the archos 605. TIA
anyone know if this will support DVB-T? (not DMB)
anyone know if this will support DVB-T? (not DMB)
Cowon will release a DVB-T USB Stick but only for A3 models. [thumbdwn]
I would rather see DVR functionality instead of DVB-T! for good DVB-T you need a bigger antenna right? Also DVB-T isn't popular at all in Holland (even analog cable gives better quality here... and DVB-C is available everywhere).
Besides the local issues, if it would be possible to record live video from any source up to PAL resolution into MPEG4, it would be like heaven! no need for a videorecorder/ dvd recorder :)

WRONG dude, gapless playback on the ipod was only introduced last year.
Before that the only players that allowed gapless mp3 were the rio karma, the rca xxxxx (i do not know the exact model number so there is no point in giving you the wrong one) and rockbox based players.
I was wondering about that...
The original hdd based mp3 player the Personal Jukebox had it too. I had one of these for about six years before it finally died recently.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Personal_Jukebox
I'm hoping the Q5 will replace that for me (with significantly more features of course).
A removable battery would make this player soooooo much sweeter [thumbsup]

Excuse me... Gen 4, whatever....[yawn] ...You are quick to point out inaccuracies, but miss the point entirely....the point is that it is an option that should be standard on mp3 players, and for the q5 not to have it would be crucial. I mean for gods sake, the POS Rio 256 MB I got my wife 2 years ago had it, the Q5 as "a more capable unit" should have it also.....
Back on topic....
does anyone know if it will have line out for audio. its sounds better in my car than the earphone out
I would assume so, but I don't know for sure.

I completely agree with you regarding gapless playback but you missed my point completely which was that gapless on DAP's is a rarity and not common practice at all, contrary to your claim that it has been around forever.
Had you not made an inaccurate claim then I would have to reason to correct it, but if you are going to state something as a fact it had better be correct
One further correction, it was the gen 5.5 ipod that brought in gapless on the ipod.

Just to clarify this further, very few DAP's support gapless.
I said that it has been around forever, and that a Rio Karma 256MB I got over 2 years ago had it, not that every DAP offers it. You obviously have more of an interest in iPods than I do and therefore know more "details" about the little buggers, but iPod Genereations aside, the main competitor to the Q5 (archos 604 and 605) has gapless audio. It is like the Honda offering navigation in their new models of cars, but Lexus leaving it out....[thumbdwn]

No, I just have a major interest in gapless playback on DAP's.
The Archos PMP's you mentioned do not have proper gapless playback, it is close but gaps remain.
Please if you are going to post anymore do some research first and I will not have to correct you.

Well, maybe it wasn't 256MB (I didn't even use it, it was my wife's), but WHATEVER! You are focused on the details of some other players, all the while ignoring the point of my post....gapless audio! You didn't even bother answering the question I orginally posted (does the q5 have gapless?) instead focusing on correct my posts. You obviously live, eat, breathe, and sleep DAP so we have established that you know everything about them. But, the fact that you "have" to correct me says something about your character....
B.O.T. please!!
ADDED: Besides, since the Q5 runs on WinCE, doesn't the Cowon Media run like software? If so, software has been able to have gapless for a while also (WinAmp, AquaLung, WMP, etc). Shouldn't this be an easy firmware or software change to make the Q5 gapless?

I actually emailed advancedmp3players.co.uk yesterday, must have been just before they released this news, goog to see they are still mentioning the month of September where other sites and forums are saying late October, this will keep me slightly more interested now their is some spec.
This is the reply I got from Amp3 yesterday:
After a conversation with the company who are responsible for the distribution of iAudio/Cowon products in the U.K. I have learned that the bosses at Cowon are keeping the details of the European Version of the Q5 player very close to their chests until it is shown at the IFA Gadget show in Berlin.
Until we receive the final lists of specifications and pricing we are unable to list on our website.
I apologize for not being able to provide you with further information at this time.
When is the IFA gadget show anyone???

Haven't been to IFA, but a German tech-news page (heise.de) just came up with a report about Cowon presenting the A3 and Q5 on IFA.
http://www.heise.de/newsticker/meldung/95343
Quote: Available by October, 40gb Q5 650€, 60gb Q5 700€
Q5 Navigation is mentioned to be with the device in Korea, but not directly mentionend to be brought to the European (at least German) market.

Good answer :)
I was expecting someone to say the last day of september meaning a futher delay lol
When does it finish lol
Well, the amp3 link starts as:
"Fresh from the IFA Electronics Trade Show in Berlin..."
On the other hand, the video specifications are a bit disappointing compared to a3. mkv, h.264, ogg are not rare at all. Maybe later firmware... or can you install all the WinCE stuff on it? Maybe you can even cross-compile mplayer somehow...
Also don't quite understand, given that it already has digital out, why it does not have this option for pure audio playback... or does it? One could use high-end DAC, not only amp with the line out.
Good answer :)

BTW, does DVB-T make it automatic that one can use DAB as well? I couldn't see any reference.

Does the Q5 support DVR - from TV, etc. or not? It's unclear since in the press release it says: "DVR functionality with video (MP4) recording from TV, VCR or camcorder."
Even if it's only available by using a Dock.. at least the Q5 will have DVR ability (The A3 have it, why shouldn't the Q5?)

From what I understand, the Q5's processor (Alchemy) is not powerful enough to support DVR (AV sources recording) whereas the A2/A3 have Texas Instruments DaVinci processors.

dude, the Davinci is a specialized processor dedicated solely to encoding/decoding. The A3 has another general general use cpu that us much weaker that it uses for all other tasks.
From what i've read, the Q5 only has the Alchemy processor, which is general use. And it uses that for all decoding/encoding as well.

Me too. I've not decided yet between A3 and Q5. I will check prices and specs when it's out. Unfortunately the industry is not yet so far as we would like. A perfect device with cell phone, BT, Wi-Fi, GPS, Radio, TV (DMB, DVB-T), PVR, HD playback, Win XP or Linux, small enough and with long battery life. But unfortunately it is not possible to produce such a player/pocket PC yet.
I already own an A2 so I really don't see the advantage of getting an A3, I'm going for the Q5, but I want to see an official price and spec first.

I don't need GPS, Wifi, HD playback, etc...
I want a solid PMP with great sound, "universal" codec suport, and great battery life. Play music. Play videos. Do it well. Do it for long time. End of spec requests from my end.
So far the A2 is the closest to that bill.

Yes Toshiba announced it, but it won't be available for some time for others. I think Apple has the rights to get the newest drives first.
They have the same dimensions like the old 80GB HDD so if the Q5 has a Zif Hdd wich is 8mm thick it will be definitily possible to change it. The problem is just if the Q5 is easy to open?

Movie Player
File Format - AVI, ASF, WMV, MPG
Video Codec - DivX, XviD, MPEG4, WMV 7/8/9, OGM
Video Resolution - Max. 720 x 480, 30 fps
Audio Codec - MP3, WMA, AC3
Audio Resolution - Max. 48KHz, 320kbps
Subtitle - SMI Format
Max. Continuous Playback time - Max. 7 hours
Does the maximum video resolution determines that video files with higher resolution wouldn't play at all, or does it only mean that this is the maximum video viewing resolution (higher resolution videos will still play but with lesser quality)? Anybody has the answer?
I think, It just means that video over that resolution will not display any better and just get "cropped" or "resized" to the same size.
No, video with higher resolution will not play at all or will be very choppy. What do you expect from a 600 MHz AMR CPU? How could such CPU decode HD video? Even some modern 3GHz CPUs can't do it.

Max. 720 x 480, 30 fps is much for 600MHz but i think that is normal today....because of only using for videoencoding.... but i think a bit more is also okay;) but we'll see
I remember I had no problems with Duron 600 MHz and 720x576 MPEG-4 video. MPEG-2 720x576 even plays smoothly on Celeron 400 MHz.
Of course you need a highly optimized decoder, because the CPU will probably have restricted instructions. No MMX or SSE. But I'm not a specialist in this.

I guess that's true, but keep in mind that even though videos that some of us d/l from the internet (legally, of course...) are rips of HD broadcasting, they are still encoded in either DivX or XviD. These rips are sometimes categorized as HR (High Resolution) videos, which means that the difference between them and "normal" DivX files is in resolution only. Therefore, you won't need to have any special chip to view those.
However, there is a possibility that the Q5 cpu is not strong enough to render such large files (or buffers). I hope that this is not the case, and that the limitation is only relevant for viewing the files (files with a better resolution than the max resolution wouldn't look any better with the Q5). HR DivX is becoming more popular everyday now, and due to improved file sharing methods, faster connections, larger hard-drives and better pc monitors, my guess is that it will soon become a default.
The problem is not only in format, but also in resolution. If you have an SD PAL video, it has rezolution 0.4 Mpx. A fullHD video has 2 Mpx. So you need a 5x faster processor to decode fullHD (3000 MHz instead of 600MHz the Q5 has).
Furthermore most HD rips are not in MPEG-4 ASP (AKA DivX), but in MPEG-4 AVC (AKA h.264) which is significantly more difficult to decode. The standard of today and near future is Matroska container, MPEG-4 AVC video and AC3 or Vorbis sound.
Once again, don't expect the Q5 (or any other similar player) to be able to decode HD video. It simply won't play. Not that it will be in lower quality, it won't play at all!
Maybe the A3 will be able to decode 720p MPEG-4 ASP. This would be very nice. But the A3 has a special processor targeted at video decoding.

the most interesting bit being:
"The player will ship as standard with Bluetooth, GPS Navigation and built in Games."
you just get the feeling they mean with the £XXX dock though :\
Also says it should be £379 for 40GB and £399 for 60GB.
the only problem i would have with buying the q5 is that it is not widescreen. To me, this seems a bit backwards since movies seem to be getting more and more widescreen. How many new movies and stuff come out that are NOT widescreen??? when the Q5 does play widescreen movies, how does it look? are there bars at the top, or does it stretch it to fit? if there are bars at the top, does the area of the movie equal the same or more of that you would see on the a2?
Er...it looks like it's widescreen...though I'm not sure if the aspect ratio is exactly right...still, it's definitely not "fullscreen" ratio.

WOW!!! I hope this means its CLOSE TO RELEASE!
This means it has built in wifi as well!! :). I am so freeking happy to see the specs now!
Yes, it seems the long wait is finally over!
I contacted our source at Cowon, when we can expect our review unit.
Our last info suggested sometime this week, but with Cowon you never know.
So, i guess it should be available within a week or so. (There is usually not that much time between availability of review units and retail sales since the units are the same)
I'd be curious to hear who you work for. You say "we can expect our review unit", but you neglect to mention who "we" are.
I'd love to see a review of the version of the Q5 that will hit the US, though.
looks delicious! any chances Q5 can play flv files?
(i heard there is a flv plugin for TCPMP player running on windows mobile systems?)
hehe come on Cowon, bring the Q5 on! :)

I just talked to them as well (using 2 different emails, lol) and they told me that the USA should get the Q5 within this month. I hope this is true[smile]

That plugin only works on ARM devices.

No idea how accurate is this, it is a importer from Singapore
It just looks like a big brother of D2 >.<
There seems to be no mention of DVB-T, Is this still going to be inicluded? If so will the american version have the option? does anyone know?
I'm disappointed there's no mention of navigation for the US. Hopefully this will be available as an add on. Even with out that it's a great list of codec support. I'm pretty sure I'll be picking on of these up soon.
I need a simple answer and I have not been able to find it. Can the Q5 record from tv or do ou have to purchase something extra?
No it can't, even if you purchased something extra....
It's been answered before.
Interesting conversation I just had with live support from Cowon sales:
Marc:
A few months ago I asked a sales rep from Cowon if the Q5 would have PDA/PIM functions (ie. calendar, contacts, to do list) and I was told that, yes, the Q5 would have these functions. After looking through the specs on your website, I do not see any of these functions listed. Are these not included on this device? If not, can they be added somehow by installing additional programs?
Welcome Marc! Your request has been directed to the Sales Department department. Please wait for our operator to answer your call.
Call accepted by operator Technical Support Team 2. Currently in room: Technical Support Team 2, Marc.
Technical Support Team 2:
these can be added
Technical Support Team 2:
but it seems like it is just not displayed in the specs
Marc:
Are these programs available through Cowon? Or han you recommend where I can get them, or what I would need to look for?
Technical Support Team 2:
this should be available in the player through cowon
Marc:
OK, also, is there a way to make this device act as a DVR like the A2/A3?
Technical Support Team 2:
yes it has this capability
Marc:
So I can record from a source like a tv or dvd player?
Marc:
Also, is there a price set for the GPS version that is coming out in December?
Technical Support Team 2:
yes you can record from those sources. GPS is coming very soon
Technical Support Team 2:
in dec
Marc:
No price though?
Technical Support Team 2:
sorry none at the moment
Marc:
Great, thanks for your help!
Technical Support Team 2:
Thank you for using Cowon America's live support service. We hope the information provided was helpful for you. If you have any further questions you may visit our website and browse our Knowledgebase to search for answers in the future.
I find it odd that the PDA functions are not listed in the specs. And this person says that you CAN record from a source like TV or DVD player, but this is not listed in the spec sheet. Wouldn't you think that DVR functions would be a huge selling point?
ill tell you in a couple days, just ordered mine :-)
Can't wait to hear what you think, DSAK77!
I don't think this has been posted yet. It a page form the American site with lot of detailed information.

Other than knowing exactly where you are as you're traveling along, are there other benefits of GPS? I'm trying to decide whether to get the Q5W now or wait for the GPS version. I don't travel that much and when I do I usually know where I am and where I'm going. When I do need help, Google maps usually gives me what I need.

I don't see a kickstand. Please tell me it has one. I must have Cowon devices confused with the Archos devices. If it doesn't have a kickstand, how is it supposed to stand up on its own? Is there an accessory you can buy? I will NOT buy a PMP that can't stand up on it's own and hopefully stand at a tilted angle for hands free viewing.

You can get the Noreve (http://www.noreveusa.com/category/PMP_Cowon/product/Cowon_iAudio_Q5_Tradition_leather_case.html) leather case with built in stand. A little pricey but made of quality products.

Thank you ecardwell1. It looks like the Noreve case might work. I wasn't sure from the pictures I saw whether the stand was solid material covered by leather or just firm leather that was somewhat flexible. I would prefer a solid stand.

There is something rigid in there. Not sure if it is steel or hard plastic. Seems quite stable. I have had mine for some time. Will try it out when my Q5W comes on tuesday the 4th.

Thanks again for your timely response. The kickstand was a real deal breaker for me. As I have stated before, I have had a PDA for years and very unhappy that it won't stand up on its own. I have ebooks and lots of documents on it. My only other concern is whether I need to wait for the GPS. I don't really think I need it unless there are other applications that need it that I don't know about.

Scheduled for UPS delivery tomorrow!!! Woot!

We share a Garmin GPS between our cars - one car has a semi-permanent suction cup mount, the other has an as-needed, weighted mount that uses friction to remain in place on top of the dash. Each mount hooks up to a nearby lighter plug, so the Garmin gets power/charge from both arrangements.
Even though I seem to have a reasonable sense of direction and location, the Garmin is great for seeing a dynamic representation of possibilities when traffic comes about or a change of plans comes occurs while out.
Beyond that, there is never a need to hit Google Maps for directions, anymore. The GPS unit has a very efficient address input method (i.e., it relies on its db to quickly scope down your choices as you enter more data) and getting to a new place is no longer a hunt for signs or "third light, .5 miles . . ." kind of directions. It talks to use while the map moves with our progress, tells us when we're near the next turning point and even spells it out in street names instead of distances. It's vastly more useful to hear, "In point .4 miles turn right onto Pleasant Avenue . . . (.35 miles later, just before the intersection) turn right onto Pleasant avenue . . ." than try to decipher a map that says you should turn right in .4 miles.
Plus, there's times when you just want the fastest way somewhere - we often punch in Home when out shopping or visiting, because it's a saved location and the GPS unit sometimes gets us back faster than our usual routes.
Further, I've used the Garmin's capabilities for lookup to find pharmacies, coffee houses and the like when away from my usual driving range. And, the nice thing is that after finding a place (with a convenient phone number, to call and ensure they're still open), you just hit the "Go" button and it takes you there from wherever you are currently located.
Much of the time it just sits there showing you a dynamic map of where you are, but when you want to use it, it's quite nice to have on tap.

Well,
The Q5 is here in the office with me, it came in a day early!!!!
I have just played with it for about an hour, Ihave some intial concerns.
Butv onto the good stuff.
Build quality: Wow, metal??? Whats this?? Extremely solid build, no chasis flex, feels good and solid in the hands.
Screen: Best PMP screen I have ever seen, hands down, so sexy.
OS. Win CE is fuly functional with way more features that Pocket PC, or windows mobile 6.0. Mouses, usb drives, keyboards all plug and play wonderfully.
Radio reception is fine with the earphone in, unlike some reviews.
Sound quality is cowon like, i.e. super.
Video playback on the 37" LCD is awsome.
More to come....
Cons....
Wi-Fi signal reception is weak, even withantenna extended.
The pop up keyboard on Win CE has a glitch, it doesnt pop up half the time, leaving you stuck with no way to type. It work son some web sites and not others.
Other that those two things, I see not cons thus far.
Hopefully a Fireware update with fix the keyboard issue and wifi issue.
MORE TO COME!

Thanks DSAK77, did you use the component cable to the LCD TV?
Thanks DSAK77, did you use the component cable to the LCD TV?
Yes I did, and it looks great for movies and pictures.
However, when using it to view WinCE the colors are weak and somewhat run together.

Awesome DSAK77, that's great news...I'm wondering if the Q5 will play .vob files, you know the video files you get when you rip a DVD? I doubt it will...sometimes Jetaudio even has problems with them freezing..

The following is a chat transcript I just had with COwon.
The gist is that there will be no "GPS version of the q5w"
GPS is only available as an add on.
So you buy the q5w and then get the gps cradle.
199$
Greetings. Please answer the following as well as you can.
cowon q5w
1) when will the gps version be available? How much will it cost?
2) Will the gps cradle be offered as an addon for cowon q5w?
If so, how much and when available?
Call accepted by operator Tech support team 5. Currently in room: Tech support team 5.
Tech support team 5:
1. no GPS version
Tech support team 5:
2. GPS cradle is what you would need to buy
Tech support team 5:
the q5 is gps ready
Tech support team 5:
cost 199.99 est.
Tech support team 5:
mid to late december release
Kevin:
so you're saying is if I want gps- it will only be offered as an add on and
Kevin:
I should first buy the cowon q5w
Tech support team 5:
yes because the Q5W is GPS ready, so all you would need to buy is the GPS DOCKING/CRADLE system
Update.
The more time I spend with this the more I like it. The Keyboard issue is til there, but there are ways around it, so its non intuitive, but functional.
Standard USB is such an improvement over using the old slower USB host like on my A2.
Bluetooth is only there for stereo audio, so no file transfer, etc.....bummer.
At this point I am very impressed with file support too. I have a bunch of MP4 ipod videos from my wifes Ipod Touch, and drag, drop and wahlah, they play flawless with no converting.
The remote that comes with it is FULL Functional, I mean FULL, you do nearly everything with it, its the best PMP remote I have ever used.
At this point my only gripe with the harware is the wi-fi range, its pretty weak.
I am a little ticked that at nearly 600 bucks I dont get a soft case, or a stand.
My A2 came with a stellar Leather flip case.
Does cowon make a case for the q5w yet?

I have the Noreve case. It is great! The stand is solid and stays put, no need for wedging against something. It fits perfect and you can access any button/port with case opened or closed. I know the cost is pretty high but it is money well spent. Was in coffee shop this morning using Q5W in Noreve case and someone came over and asked if I was watching TV. Told them I was watching Transformers, they were shocked.

ecardwell1,
Thanks for the post. It is good to hear some positive experiences with the device. I haven't received my unit and case yet, so I'm glad to hear they are working well for you.
Some of the negative comments lately(engadget!) were getting me depressed.

I was wondering... why A3 will support MKV and VOB but Q5W won't?
Does anybody knows something about it?
Thanks!
I hope it might come with a future update. Or it might be possible with an unofficial player (like CorePlayer).

Can someone confirm if it's possible to connect a USB keyboard to the Q5W? Have been following the coverage over at gadgetaholic and they say that in their experience usb keyboards don't work, although the possibility of a bluetooth one was left open. Any owners able to shed some light on this?

Bluetooth is for headphones only, if im correct.....
HI
Does anyone know what kind of Harddrive the Q5 has? I know that it's an 1.8" drive but does anyone know the exact Modelnr. of the HD? The Ipod classic has up to 160GB and also has a 1.8" HD but it's 8mm thick. So if the Cowons HD was 8mm thick I think it would be easy to swap them out..
