I just email cowon and I got this response: We are expecting a release in July possibly August if it is delayed.
So there we go not too much longer!

1) It takes longer ..
2) It costs more ..
and it could be a long time between seeing ONE (as in 'a review model') and actually having them in stock at your favorite store.

I think Cowon could at least communicate a little bit about this EU/US version. Can't wait! And no, I'm not going to buy an Archos. I don't like their pay plug-ins and they don't update firmwares (codecs etc) that often.

although I hate delays as much as everyone here, I do not think it is such a bad thing.
I'd rather have a complete working product rather than a rushed one that will probably have more problems because of the fact that they were pressured to get it out faster.. *cough* eg. Vista

Nah I say release it asap and fix anything with firmware updates ala D2. People I know whow are considering this q5 are dropping off, they are loosing sales. Im talking about commitment to a $500 article. These sales lost they will never get back.

The thing is.. this argument would work with something like the X5 which has a lot of competitors. For the Q5 however... I don't think they're going to lose very many sales from the delays because people doesn't really have a choice. The Archos is really the only possible competitor out there, and most people will agree that the Q5 is far more superior.
I think people will wait, but they know they'll be getting the 'best' product. I'd rather wait a few months and get the best player, rather than get a mediocre player now and have to upgrade again in a couple of years.

Well, cmon, let's be realistic... I mean, I too know the X5 is better than anything out there, but the iPod still sells more...

Well August as a shipping date - to which countrys? Worldwide, USA, Europe? Or does this only mean that the player is going to be released in Korea in August, and that we poor Europeans have to wait another three months?
Also: How much will it cost? 500 Euro? This seems a bit over the top for a PMP - but on the other hand: The Q5 IS over the top of the current PMPs.....
Will it be available in various bundles (with GPS, without GPS, with DVB-T receiver, without DVBT, etc...) - which is what i believe.
I want Infos! I want to know how the Packaging will be looking, whats inside when you open it, which goodies are extras, so that we have to pay extra (Argl, Bad Encounters of the Archos-Type)?
Shodan, welcome to the forum, but I have to tell you, we know as much as you. Look at the photos topics to see what it will look like, and the possible specs, but we only know what some people can translate and speculate.
P.S. It's already out in Korea, came out Mid-May.
Well, i'm sitting on the fence regarding the release date.. I would guess its going to be around Aug. which maybe the same time the Archos players hit Nth America.

Im gonna be going to Hong Kong in a few weeks time. I hope to find one of the Q5's for sale there. If I see one I'm gonna snatch it up for sure if it is a 60GB model. Because who knows how long its gonna take for it to come to the US.
At least then I can play with it on the long plane ride back..
I still don't see the point of spending money on features you won't be able to use rather than just waiting a couple of months.

im going to korea and getting it myself! i thought about waiting for it to come out here but i figured i should get it while the love is strong..maybe by the time it comes out, i will have common sense to realise that i don't have that much money to spend on a gadget..but when im in korea, i will be using the dmb function whenever im travelling by myself or im alone..plus i'll be travelling frequently to korea so i don't see the dmb function as a waste. it would be nice to wait for the europe version with possibly wifi built in rather than dmb but none of us know when or whether if this will happen.
Cowon is working very hard on his Q5, so be patient.
Btw, a new firmware has been released today with interesting wince improvements.

I was thinking that there must be a lot of action around the Cowon corridors (and workshop), they have the Q5 the A3 the X7? the iAudio7 various FW issues/upgrades/extras for the D2 (and hopefully an 8GB D2) + all there existing stock :)
Things look pretty good for new players in the near future from Cowon.
*Maybe roscomc mean quince (as in smells fruity like the VisionM dock port)

So you would buy a device that is worse just because the company that makes it gives you more information about the release date? That seems kind of strange.
I'd rather wait a month or two and be able to compare the actual devices themselves based on their specs, rather than decide to buy one or another just because it comes out first.
I just think people are in a hurry before going on holidays.
I think it's stupid to release a product in the middle of the holiday season, it's either you release it in June before the holiday season, or september when they return, but if that's the case, don't expect that many sales...

I've been watching the whole discussion for the Q5 since months. The only thing I can tell regarding the release in Europe and the Us is that there were several players from Korea wich were promised to be released outside Korea but never came. Theres the I-Station V43 with touchscreen and optional GPS. It only came to France as far as I know but only through a company wich importet them and never through I-Station directly. I know for sure that it's a whole lot of work gettin GPS for USA and Europe. But the Q5 will also have Windows CE 5.0. So this two things will push the release date back alot. I really don't know if they ever gonna release it outside of Korea. There were other PMPs, like the Viliv P2 and the I-station T43/S43. None of them came out outside of korea. So I'm crossing my fingers that the Q5 will come out here.

Roflmao, dont you mean 370 euro ??? ?I doubt if that will be true, more like in the 450 euro range i believe.

No, this (370 Euro) seems real to me. Of course, we will have to pay extra for all of the addons (GPS, TV, etc..)
For the A2 they had to invent a new OS - based on Linux (ok, linux is free, but the R&D isnt cheap). For the Q5 they can use an existing System - Windows CE. Even if Windows CE is not for free, I believe that this will cut down the developing costs dramatically.

Take another look, Filip--Just because it's Windows CE doesn't necessarily make it a palmtop (I assume that's what you mean by "palm"). I'm actually waiting to see if built-in organizer software will be available before I decide whether or not to upgrade to the Q5.

I don't speak Danish but from what I can gather it doesn't say anything new about the specs apart from the expected European version with GPS, Downlink Packet Access HSDPA, modem Wi Fi AND Bluetooth. (Yes!)
The main thing is that it is expected to be available in stock for sale on 1st September!
You CAN actually pre-order it if you want, so it is definitely coming!
I'm a bit desperate, Cowon hasn't answered any of my emails and they haven't done any communication about the US/Europe release.
I want to be optimistic, but at the moment I can't...
there are some videos of using cowon Q5 on dailymotion.com
I think that it can be used as a pocket PC(on the videos it looks like so)
and I hope that this device will apear in pixmania(Europe internet shop) as other cowon devices after releasing.

I found a small article about Q5 today in Popular Science. The gist of it is that it will have Blue Tooth and WiFi, and will integrate with cars and everything else. Then, it said that it will be available in the fall.

I read that article as well; got my issue on 7/14 and it was in the "What's New" section. I think it also mentioned some kind of GPS functionality.
I have been waiting (im)patiently like everyone else on this forum, and I have been checking in almost every day for any news on the Q5. Well, I decided to Live Chat with Cowon to see if I could get any answers from them, and this is what I was able to get:
The Q5 will be released late August or September, nothing new there.
Also, I asked if it will have a contact list and calendar and be able to be used as a PDA, and the answer was a definite yes.
I have been trying to get get more info on its PDA abilities since I came upon the Q5, and it was nice to get an answer from Cowon directly.

Well folks – just want to say that I have decided to follow Calcheese's lead and have taken the plunge and ordered (just received) a Q5 (60gb) from Korea. Of course it would have been better to have the European or US version but who knows when it will show up – it looks like September at the earliest.
I must say that first impressions are very positive. The 5 inch screen is superb and battery life very good (although not fully tested yet!)
This is really what I wanted the Q5 for! Watching films and documentaries on long haul flights.
The Q5 is perfect as a portable video player, which is actually what it is meant to be.
If I want to be half serious about internet browsing I carry a 12inch Samsung Q30 (1kg) in my hand luggage. I find that anything smaller than that just won't cut it – letters, numbers and “select” boxes are just too small even on high definition screen UMPCs (ultra mobile pc such as samsung Q1).
Of course Wince OS is limited but it saves a lot on battery, if you want to play some games you can install flash ones like on the Cowon D2.
I was seriously looking at the Archos 605, undoubtedly a nice machine, but only the 30gb version is out at the moment, the Q5 screen is bigger, no accessories until end of July (at the earliest) and then you have to buy all the extra bits and pieces! Mind you, I still might buy the 160gb version when it comes out in September/October!

I did some chatting also with Cowon America last night and was told September, but nothing more specific. I can't decide what I want more.
A. For it to be true, and at least Cowon America has some facts and knows whats going on
B. Its not true, its coming out in 2 weeks, and Cowon America is completely clueless about their own products
GARGH! I'm fed of all this waiting, I want a Q5 now, or I am going to cry :P

I understand your frustration, but -- if you think of it -- it is actually a better strategy.
It is actually not a big science to hire a bunch of people who will put posters everywhere "Our wonder #X is coming". Then people get all excited and rush in buying it, and then discover -- it's all crap. Have not you been there before?
Secondly, once you announced a delivery date, you have to ship it -- ready or not. And this is how a lot of crap gets dumped into the market.
I would rather wait until Cowon worked all the kinks out, then get someone to review the real thing, maybe to compare to some other existing players -- then we will know if it is worth buying.
I cannot believe you already made up your minds by reading the marketing hype... There has not been a single meaningful comparison of Q5 to other players yet. It is completely unclear how it is going to come out.
The fact that they do not have marketing, and are actually working on the product *before* announcing it actually instills some confidence in me that it will come out fine ( and not hurried up to satisfy the hype ).

agree with chattabobs,these cowon people dont know how to market their own products,i think they should take some classes ,otherwise they will be left behind.

I found out about the Q5 yesterday, 15 days after buying the A2. Luckily, I talked to Newegg, and they allowed me an exception, and I'm sending it back for a refund to join the wait for the amazing Q5. So, hopefully, August, September, whenever, just as long as it's not 2008.
you don't need a whole marketing department just to say when the Q5 is a bout to come...

If I was in the business of selling DAPs and PMPs and I had a stock of really good current model DAPs and PMPs, would I be promoting the next generation, which isn't yet available (basically encouraging people to wait), or would I put my energy into marketing the products I already had for sale?
What if I encourage you to wait, and then a competitor beats me to market and you buy their product instead? Would I wish I hadn't encouraged you to wait?

I just had a live chat with Cowon Sales in the US, and I was told that the release date has been pushed back again until the end of September. He also said that he would be posting this in the forums here sometime soon. Man, this wait is getting annoying!

Hi everyone.
This is an update on the Q5 purchased from Korea a few weeks ago.
Having played with the baby for a few weeks I can honestly say that I think it is the best video/audio player available at the moment. I am talking about pure video and audio quality. I can state this as I also have an Ipod, a Cowon D2 and Archos 604.
The 60 Gb disk is one of the largest available, I have about 40 films on it at the moment (160 Gb would be even nicer).
Battery life is decent for videos (6.5 hours)
As far as the menus being in Korean and not having integrated WIFI, I don't see this as a problem myself.
The main controls are in English. For the windows CE 5.0 menus, you can figure out what is going on by using a windows CE 5.0 emulator on any computer.
Surfing the internet is limited in Windows CE 5.0 (there are also very few programs available for CE 5.0). And you need to be an ant to see what is going on, using the stylus with the on-screen keyboard is tricky (see picture). As previously mentioned, in my opinion any screen smaller than 10 or even 12 inches is a waste of time for serious internet browsing.
It looks like from what I have been reading on the forum (quoted from Cowon America) that the release date for the Q5 has been pushed back till end of September at the earliest. If some of you are getting itchy feet you can order one direct from Korea on THIS WEBSITE (http://global.gmarket.co.kr/challenge/neo_goods/goods.asp?goodscode=116020584).

I'm thinking of Viliv P2 or X2 ..... they ain't available in US yet.... but if they all arrive here the about the same time.... choosing between these 3 PMP will bring me a hard time.... I know Cowon's audio quantitly is exceptionally good, while i have Viliv P1 using and its pretty good as well..... and for GPS functionality and durability, Viliv X2 got my attention...... but i would like to get Q5 as my very first Cowon product....i dunno....

All i want from a PMP is simply what i saw @ Cowon Q5 and Viliv P2.....
1. a 4 inch touchscreen
2. USB host function, so i can load up pictures on the go rather than buy another 4~5 pieces of memory cards.
3. SD/SDHC slot (Viliv X2 has)
4. nice audio/video quaility and tons of format supported and upgradable.
5. GPS
6. Removable battery (Viliv P2 / X2)
7. Bluetooth's nice to have, but not necessary

Well Germany will very likely be getting the Q5 at the end of September. Seems the European/US release is partly delayed to get press coverage from the IFA in Berlin.

thats one of the resons i'm getting a cowon q5 rather than an archos 605, they have terrible customer support and thier update are crap and infrequent. though i could have like the cowon q5 to have 80-160gb...... thats the only problem do far the cowon q5 has -- not much space!

uh.... i'm not quite sure what you mean but if it means that you are switching camps (archos), i'm gonna warn you that:
1.crappy customer service
2.in 6 months the'll releases something better
3.lack of codecs
4.pay for internet and other addons
5. made in chins (china quality is crap -- the o4 series had a "staic" problem that happend alot)
---OH.. Yeah, forgot to add that thier the same as apple (ipods. iphones) except in pmp form.....---

Archos is a scam. Not only they make you pay for all software codecs which adds up to the cheap original price, but these losers can't even give you an AC adapter/charger with the Archos 605. Actually, a charger doesn't even exist, you can't plug one on the Archos. So you can't charge it unless you buy a dock + adapter. Talk about cheapness and globe-trotting...

Yup..... Korean PMP / MP3 are indeed very durable and user friendly..... i have to admit China has tons of PMP coming out... but even cost (maybe) a leg more.... i'll still get the Korean PMP (hahaha or if Korean's design, and made in Hong Kong...i'll consider as well)

you'll need a large dock to activate the gps, and the wifi *may* be built in on the eu/us version.

What is the point of making a device out of reach of the mast consumers? just so johnny snot nose rich kids could afford it? Geese!! Thats a lot of money! Say why couldn't Cowon give us a fair bit of warning about this, I'm sure in the 8-9 months or whatever it is they've been dealaying the launch they could have dropped a hint :(
I know people have purchased the Q5 direct from Korea but I'm sure they did not pay this much, and Im sure any extra fetaures that come put our way will not warrant the huge price tag.
