View Full Version : What would you think of a flash q5?

I saw that Archos 5th gen is said to have a 605, available with HD or flash.

I was thinking that it would be great if a flash based q5 was available.

Something like a Q5 with a good base amount of flash (8 or maybe 16 gigs) and a SDHC reader would be pretty cool.

(many of us don't like HD players for their likeliness to get damaged when running like crazy, even though we're aware that they can hold a lot more data...)

Guess I'm the only one thinking about it then ^^

he he i think for something more demanding and seeing its purpose as a video player, music player etc lots more space is requred then you suggest @ 16gb.

now if it had flash memory of around 30gb + then that would be a different case, but very pricy.

tbh nowerdays these harddrives are built for the average action.

Stan, you didn't even give people 12 hours to reply. Please show a bit more patience before bouncing a thread in the future.

Thank you.

I'm not sure I see the point - it's real hard to use a video player, games machine, GPS, etc. etc. while 'running like crazy'. Why can't they just make a (flash based, Yeah 8GB or more would be nice!) G4.

Now a flash based X5/M5, that' I'd buy, if it enabled them to power it off one or two NiMH AA cells (not 4, 6 or 8 though). These days 1 NiMH is 2700mAHr at 1.2v, which is same energy as 900mAHr 3.6v, which is about what you have in a disk based X5.

As someone said, modern disks are pretty tough, although they still wear out. If you're going to replace them with more expensive 'doesn't wear out (much)' Flash Memory then you really ought solve the 'wears out' battery problem too. Ok, colour me green, I just hate to see good $300 kit go to the skip because $5 proprietary parts can't be gotten.

A flash based player at 40+ GBs will cost too much. I wouldn't mind, however, an SDHC card slot on the Q5 (in addition to the internal hard drive).

Flash are great but not for a pmp, unless its 60gb and that wont happen cheaply for quite a few years.

I guess 'will cost too much' depends on 'when' and 'who you are'. If I thought it would really last for many years I'd cheerfully pay 2008 prices for that much Flash (actually I'd probably only need 32GB). Plus, of course, power consumption still goes up the more Flash memory you have, as does size/weight, so I would tr not to have more than required.

Today 32GB (in USB stick form - internal would be cheaper) is going to be about £200, vs £50 for 30Gb disk drive (in UK), but that's probably not even a 100% price premium on the basic player price. I might pay that (and it'll be way lower in 2008) if I thought the rest of the player was suitably bullet-proof, and not burdened with some weird battery type I couldn't get after 2-3 years.

Well originally I thought that the Q5 was flash based (4 or 6 gb) and that made me not want to buy it right away.

When you're dealing with a PMP you need a lot of space. You're going to want to watch movies on this thing and 4gb is just not enough. That'll hold what... 2 or 3 movies? That's useless. What about your music? I have a huge collection of songs and I don't want to have to update my music player every day before I go out. I just want to be able to put everything on it once and never have to worry about it again.

So if anything, the Q5 should have 80+gb on it. But again - that's just my opinion.

I don't run like crazy.

Well, I think 16gb as a base flash storage would do the trick, and the option to put a shd card in it would allow for more storage.

Atm, that would give us 24gb (and 32 in the future) of storage. Let's say you use 16 for your music, that would still leave 8gb of space for your videos, which is enough in my opinion. It's not like you re going to put all your videos on it.

Btw, my reason for willing such a machine is that I use my D2 mostly as a DAP, but sometimes feel the need to watch videos (during 5 hours train trip for example).

In that case, the D2 screen doesnt do the trick. It's wayyyy too damn small to be comfortable.

And I don't feel like buying a dedicated PMP just to play videos. Thats why I feel the need for a DAP that can provide a great screen for watching videos while being.

And indeed, a replaceable battery would be a great addition too...

ps : I used to be in the same "I want to be able put everyting on my PMP/DAP". Then I realized I just didnt needed it cause I would only listen to maybe 2°% of what was on it in a week.

Two words.................MEIZU M8........If everything goes to plan and the pre released specs are the ones that the final release has, the battery is decent and the price is as listed. it will be hard to see anything coming close to it.

Yeah, but sq of that thing is unknown, at best, and the screen isn't really bigger than the D2...

i read somewhere (i don't remember where) that meizu has really good sound quality. i won't expect the M8 to be any different. plus it looks good too...but personally, i like the simple (and original) design of the Q5..

Yep. Thats what i'm waiting for. It will be available in 16GB flash.

Also if the Q5 used flash such as an SSD then the price would be too high. SSDs have just recently been available in laptops and UMPCs.

Also i have yet to see a full blown flash pmp. Like one with a large screen and all the features. That Sandisk one was the closest thing (the View) but that got canned recently.

the Meizu M8 will (supposedly) be sporting a 720x480 3.32 inch display. Personally I think 3.32inch is just about large enough for a decent viewing experience and with 4gb/8gb/16gb options it seems like this could be a winner. Oh yeah not forgetting the fact it's a touchscreen phone with wifi and blutooth aswell as a host of other options. Too good to be true? perhaps
heres a link to the full prliminary specs:

I don't see myself buying loads of flash cards, costs too much. Imagine you want 30gb. depending on the type of card you'd have to spend 100's of dollars to have them. Plus that'd mean keeping several cards with you and stuff. It's just not convenient. Of course, the day they put out a 50gb flash card for 100 bucks... but that's another story.
