View Full Version : Are you gonna buy the Q5?
Just thought id get a feeling of who from this forum is atually interested in buying on of these. There seems to be a lot of interest.
So whats your answer, and any reasons why?
For me it will depend on a number of factors and im sure it will for many others. 1st is whether or not the wifi is implemented. i have wifi in all my homes so it would be a positive factor for me. As well as this is the price, as long as its priced reasonable then BAM i will purchase. I hope cowon price competativly with others like Archos, maybe the 40gb version will be around £290 ish, then the 60gb might break the £300 barrier. There shouldent be a big difference in cost, its only 20gb.
Anyone out there who will just take the plunge and buy it no matter what?

Will buy it def, dont even bother the price, its the wife that bothers ^^
Anyways, ill buy this slick piece of equipment as soon as its available in europe. Made a huge mistake, sold my M3L and bought a Ipod (i know, i know, im cursed for the rest of my life) [blush]
i think i will be selling my M3 as well. i have no need for it. i dont even use it no more, maybe the money can help fund a small amount of the price of the Q5.

I'm going to be buying an X7 maybe - I just want a music player. The sort of places I take a music player, and the sort of things I'm doing at the time, preclude looking at a screen or pressing buttons.
GPS? Nope, got a GPS, designed for the job, with the right mapping for trekking up hills (Garmin 60CSX). Come on Cowon, gimme a music player, not a camera, PC, smartphone, GPS, video player, games machine, pocket TV ...
Yes, as soon as its released.
I currently have a 4 year old M3 which is dying slowly (battery-wise, not performance-wise). Plus I want to be able to watch movies.
I was going to get the A3 because originally I thought that the Q5 was a flash-drive based device, but when I found out that it will have a 20gb+ capacity, there is no longer any reason NOT to buy it.
I just can't wait for this. I don't really care that it's like $500, it looks like its totally worth it. I only really have 2 disappointments:
1. Windows CE. This has to be the dumbest move Cowon has ever made. Why put Windows on a device... ever! Plus, they've always supported Mac and Linux and it just seems like it's a dangerous territory to enter. Windows CE is just not reliable and I'm really scared about what it will do to the performance of the device. If they had put a Linux-based OS on the Q5 - that would have totally blown me away.
2. Wifi not being built-in. Not really a big deal for me. The fact that it has Wifi at all is remarkable, so if I have to use a dongle to use it - not really a big deal, but it would of course be super cool if it were built in.
So basically yes - I will buy it no matter what. I just have to find some way to get it to Canada since Cowon America stopped shipping here.
I don't know how anyone could realistically say they'll definitely buy it when we're not even clear on what the final specs/price will be, or even what's included in the package.
But maybe that's just me. :) I'm _very_ interested in it, but I'm not going to say I'll definitely buy it based on (even well-founded) speculation. I'm haunted by memories of 'The X5 will have a firmware update to enable ID3 browsing.'

With all the new linux mobile projects coming out I really hope that eventually someone gets linux on it. linux would make this thing unbelievable. Ill probably still buy it, but i would double time it to the store for linux
^ im sure someone wil try and boot some sort of linux on it. maybe a dual boot option. I think it would be eaiser to do it on this device as such more than other previous devices like the D2, X5 etc. but im no expert.
I voted depends
which is, integrated wifi. bluetooth, hspda
If none of the above im going umpc
There's a lot of PMPs out there. The A2, IMHO, sets the bar... and sets it pretty high. The Q5, at first, looks like a better A2. But there is a very fundamental difference... and it's not looks, functionality, features or anything else you can observe with the eye.
It's the fact that it runs Microsoft Windows CE. While that doesn't matter to most consumers, it matters much to me and is the reason why I won't be buying the Q5. Now, if somehow somebody ports a Linux to it... sure... I'd certainly consider it again. I'd give even greater consideration if Cowon supports the Linux port (there are some media players that do have that option).
Cowon of course, has been distancing themselves away from Linux... so it's possible that the A2 (we now have 2 of them in the family) is the last Cowon product for me. I may be switching to Archos... we'll see.
As most of you know, Im obsessed by the Q5, I can't wait to get my hands on one. As someone else mentioned, I don't really mind if I have to use a dongle for the wi-fi. I would like the GPS function though. And I also would love to see some sort of Linux OS on it, rather than Windows CE, and at least just a different version of Windows.

I might but then again i'm considering the Archos 404 (30GB) right now...it sells for 1/4 the price of a cowon Q5. Although I love the Cowon Q5, i might wait for the next version that comes out in a year or so.
Another major consideration is the the Quality. Sometimes I think with Archos quality sucks. i am not sure as I haven't done my research. But I am told I have to buy lots of add ons and when it comes to movies and such I have a lot of converting to do which i don't have time for. Cowon has the best quality and that is very important to me which is why i'm sitting on the fence!

Don't even go there, its teeny weeny, and it deffinately doesn't have the "Wow" factor to anyone looking over your shoulder, whereas if you had a Q5 in your hands there would be lots of "Wows"
Depends... battery life is the killer for me. Probably will buy, but remaining on the fence until specs are better known.
Eric
Wow I'm surprised how everyone has completely different needs from a player. Battery life for me is really of no concern. If it works for 2 hours, that'll do for me. Interesting.
Yes its very interesting.
I dont understand why some people dont "prefer" or "like" the use of windows CE on this device?? any reasons?
Afterall, isent this ment to be a PMP and im sure the Cowon GUI plays this roll pretty well.
For me the Windows Ce side of the device has no relavance, the only thing i may use is internet but thats it. Even if Cowon decided to completly locked us out of using windows CE it wouldent matter to me. I think in this case, cowon see windows CE as just the back bone to atually what matters most i.e. the PMP.
On the other hand, are there any special distros of linux which can only be installed on such device or can any distro be used?

I may not be able to actually resist when it finally comes out to glowing reviews, but I'm not planning on buying one.
I'm perfectly happy with my A2 and would like to wait for the next generation.
You know, the UPMC with OLED, 200GB HD, XGA 5" screen, full Windows game emulator and 50h battery life for oh, say 300 quid? [biggrin]

Are they even panning on releasing the device outside of Korea? Dont see anything about it on the global sides of cowon. It would be a shame if they decided not to release it outside korea :(
Yes its very interesting.

Again, I don't think it's an issue for most. It's an issue for me because my life IS Linux. And therefore, it becomes a major selling point. I might not even have an A2 (or any PMP) were it not for the fact that it runs Linux.
It's a matter of principle... Again, I'm not a typical consumer. Most won't care.

For me, this is also the case. Linux is just as much about a principle as is it about an OS. Its about complete freedom. Free to use what you want, free to know whats happening at any level, free to customize everything. Its about knowing that I am in control of the OS

Yes you will read in other threads companies like advancedmp3player in the Uk have confirmed so
As I was using my A2 today I realized one thing: It can be used with one hand only. Not sure you'll be able to do that with the Q5.
It's really handy in a number of situations.
I've just bought a touch screen GPS and I hate what using the touch screen with my fingers does to the screen. I can't imagine doing that on a video machine, smudging the screen like that. I am rather retentive about having a clean screen to watch videos on my A2.
And using the touch screen with a stylus (2 handed) is impractical in a number of situations. Driving for exemple.
Going to have to think hard about if I want a Q5 or not.

For one, Windows usually requires good hard ware. 1 gig of ram will run Windows XP fine, but for Vista you will need a lot more

Yes its very interesting.
I dont understand why some people dont "prefer" or "like" the use of windows CE on this device?? any reasons?
The problem with putting any kind of Windows on a device like this is the fact that Windows is incredibly unstable and buggy (especially Windows CE). It's also much slower than an equivalent Linux-based platform. I'm afraid of something as stupid as having to wait for Windows to load songs and create a pause in between songs. That for me would totally destroy the entire player experience and Windows has been known to cause such stupid things.
From what I've seen though, they've got the music/video player running on their own Cowon system (like all older players) and have Windows installed separately just for Internet/Messenger/etc... Which is fine. It's great, actually. Because then you get the best of both sides. However, I can't confirm this, as Im only making an educated guess about it based on the reviews/videos I've seen.
sgfaulkner said it right too. Windows doesn't have nearly as much freedom. Linux is opensource and it allows individuals to pretty much do whatever they want with their player. Once you put that darn Microsoft monopoly in play - you've created a huge limitation for yourself and your player.
And the thing is that Cowon really has no reason to put Windows on their device. To me this looks like a sign that Cowon is financial trouble and is making a switch to Windows because its cheaper (after some deal they signed with Microsoft). I just can't imagine any other reason for it. Although... even that, doesn't make much sense since Linux is totally free. I'm not sure. I just can't understand this decision.

But wouldent Cowons' own system be running on top of windows CE anyway, therefore having the effects of Windows CE e.g. lagging? (if i understand your point correctly?)

yeah , i wouldn't go that far, but watching the interface videos over and over again really sucks. I just want this to get released! I am almost thinking of buying a D2 just to hold me over, but I must resist!
But wouldent Cowons' own system be running on top of windows CE anyway, therefore having the effects of Windows CE e.g. lagging? (if i understand your point correctly?)
Well what I'm hoping is that they actually have two systems running separately. They have their own OS running for music/video playback and then when you start up the WIFI/Internet interface, it boots up Windows CE. That would be my hope.
But from the standpoint of a company who wants to save money, they probably did build the whole thing on top of Win CE... which would suck. :(
I am definitely buying the euro version if it comes with wi-fi (inside).
so, yup, definitely buy it if wi-fi is inside.
other than this my needs are:
1. divx on the go
2. check my email online
3. chat via wi-fi (skype, msn...)
4. rip video into the q5 (from videotapes... is that possible anyway?)
5. watch divx from my computer on my tv, wifi via q5
i voted "depends"
I'm going to wait for the full US specs to come out, price, then check out user reviews here, then make a comprehensive pros/cons list, why "I really need", or is my current gadgets is enough to tide me over for a while until then next big thing comes out next year.

For me it depends also since $500 is a lot of money for just a toy gadget. For that much money I could buy something more useful like a full blown laptop with DVD burner, HDD, WiFi, 14" LCD, full size keyboard, etc etc. I already plan on buying a D2 so my music needs will already be met and I'm also planning on buying a PSP for my video needs. Both will still be cheaper than a Q5 too even after buying SD card/Memory sticks upgrades. The Q5 just doesn't have much in terms of advantages to command such a high price. For example it will run Windows CE which doesn't allow much programs unlike Windows Mobile.
still not sure, will depend on the features.
Btw, do we know if it supports subtitle files, like .srt, .sub etc?

eric3a, I think you got a very good point about the one hand vs. two hands operation. I sure am OFTEN operating my A2 with one hand only!
Realistically, when would one really use a device like the Cowon Q5?
1. Public transit
IMO the Q5 would be a bit cumbersome to operate (not to mention a tad large) in public.
OK, it'll work pretty well on a train but it would be much more difficult on a crowded subway or a bus for example.
Can't really stand and hold on with one hand while operating the Q5 - which you can with the A2.
2. Airplane
Probably THE best place to use a PMP - except that you'll wish the battery would last longer on a long haul flight.
3. Beach
Not a chance. Sand, water, sun, lots of people (eg. potential thiefs) around = BAD!
4. Outdoors other than a beach
Sure it would work but would you WANT to use it... and if you're lounging around a swimming pool, you got the water problem again.
Besides, sun will make the screen glare.
5. At home
Sure, why not. But you probably got a bigger TV screen there somewhere!
6. On vacation - hotel room, condo, whatever
Yup , great. But if you're going to use the VIDEO OUT connector anyway, you don't need that 5" screen. The A2 would work just as well.
7. At school / at work
Even assuming you can get away with it and it doesn't get stolen, your productivity will suffer.
Hell, my A2 is definitely to blame for wasting countless hours (indirectly including the fact I spend too much time posting on iaudiophile.com! [rolleyes])
Verdict? The Q5 is an impressive machine, no doubt about that.
But I for one would think long and hard before spending that kind of money on it.
I just don't know if I would really USE it that much...

Yes that's where I am at at the moment. The Q5 does stuff I don't need or want -despite being impressive- and doesn't do the core functions that I really use any better than the A2. The function I use all the time is to watch videos on the plane. For that, the A2 excels with its one handed use and battery life. I don't see the Q5 will be better for what I intend to use it for.
I am just back from South America 2 days ago, and off to Europe in 2 days. I need good long battery life.
If my wife didn't want to grab my A2 -giving me a reason and opportunity to upgrade- I probably wouldn't be looking at another machine anyway.I don't know many other machines out there that do better portable video than the A2 for my use And this seems to include the Q5
It feels a little silly to get another A2 1.5 years after I got this one, and I'd probably go for an A3 if I thought it would actually come out... Which I am starting to doubt heavily now.
So I am still at "depends" on the other thread poll question.

For me the Q5 is my first PMP. I think after getting it, I will look for opportunities to use it. Right now I can't see myself using the q5 all the time, but thats the same way I felt about the ipod before I had one. Now can't leave the house without my ipod

Hehe I should've expected that. Actually, Cowon hasn't thought that out properly: most people are RIGHT handed and you need your RIGHT hand to operate the A2... anyway, you get the point. [devil]
I don't mean to put people off buying the Q5 of course. And for people who don't have a PMP yet, it should be a very solid gadget to start with.
But if you already have a A2, I'm not sure if it's worth it to upgrade to a Q5... but again, that's just me. I'd rather skip this generation and wait for the next one.
LOL eric3a, there's nothing wrong with getting another A2. I bought THREE of them (all from the same place, should be getting a rebate [cursing])
- one for me, then one for my gf, then one for my brother... [help]
I would LOVE to buy an archos, but with the lack of informaiton and specs and a real presence in Nth America, I see myself being tempted by the 5th Gen Archos units.. but the Q5 appeals to me a LOT more.. especially as I am a Win OS .Net developer... I see a bit of fun for coding some Win CE apps :)
After some thinking i made up my mind, i dont need the Q5, if i were to buy one, i would just use it for music only, which for me would be a waste, there is no point watching movies on this thing when i have a laptop and a HD hooked up to my tv.
Insted im putting my money to a new imac, which in waiting on for new spec upgrade.
So im gonna skip the Q5 and get the next gen of the X5. Hay i may even go for the A3 if that is ever going to come out.
same here as addz. have decided to hold off on the q5 when it eventually comes out. my current toys can hold me down til the next big one comes out. next year should have a better amped up version of the q5 or maybe umpc's prices will drop considerably and performances improve.
but again, i might change my mind later down the road after reading hopefully many positive reviews and convince myself why i need it, i just might treat myself to an early xmas present.
but right now, im going to pass on it.

1. can install TomTom Navigator on Win CE
2. wifi/bluetooth build in (no external dongles)

Hi :-)
I hesitate between an archos a605 wifi, a maxian d900 and of course a Q5 cowon :-)
My first need is to read a maximum of my videos, expecially mkv . . .
I want to watch my mkv movies and choose easily audio track, subtitle and maybe chapters too :-) [thumbsup]
So far, I don't know if the next archos gen could handle this container, neither if the Q5 or maxian could do it too . . .
But Q5 embedded windows ce so maybe we could install TCPMP . . . [biggrin]
Does the comic book reader sold with Q5 read the cbr file or rar zip file like cdisplay the ultimate comic book reader ?
And the winner is . . . [confused]
TOTORO
Archos gen5 doesnt handle mkv, that one is confirmed
Will definitely buy this!!
Mainly for remote/tv output(portable xvid player) and gps (currently use my vaio tx for trips, hopefully it'll have an optional car dock as well)
I was actually going to buy the V43 2 years ago from digital cube in korea but I decided to settle for america support and the A2 and I definitely wasn't disapointed by the quality and performance of the A2

No I'm not going to buy a Q5 anymore unless I get one for free.
My search has ended. I'm getting a 30Gb iPOD instead. Their giving them away for free these days. NO JOKE! See below. Why would I spend my money. I'll wait it out 2-4 years when Cowon's products become more advanced. Lets face it, the market is still too young and PMP's are becoming better and better on a monthly basis. In addition to that, we have umpc that are emerging right now.

Nah I don't want a player with korean only fonts.
I doubt this is ever coming to America. I fell for the Rio Chroma, I fell for ID3 tag browsing on the X5. I know better - if a PMP/DAP manufacturer says "we'll have this out by this time", and they don't.. they won't.

This is not quite true Thasp. The Q5 is pretty much confirmed for a US release. There are store websites already taking pre-orders for it. They wouldn't do this unless they were absolutely sure that they'll be able to ship it out when the release comes.
It will be released before September 1st. I'm 99.99% sure of it.

Hopefully this isn't like the A2 where the buttons/directions on the joystick stop working after 3-6 months. It'd be nice if it didn't cost $500 to get something of build quality that worked like it did when you got it past half a year, but this is cowon..

Hi :-)
Sure I would take it when I know if it could support mkv with tcpmp thanks to its windows ce 5 embedded . . .
Mkv is really really important to me and most of all I want a pmp that could play any codec or any container . . .
And according to me Mkv container with the last codec supported, multi subtitle, multi audio, attached docs is far away the best movie container . . .
That"s all folks :-)

lol, for me its probably between this, the iriver w10, and the nokia n800. the Q5 used to be at the top of my list, but +$500 seems a bit too much for some extra features i might not use. The n800 and the w10 both support VoIP, something the Q5 doesnt yet, AFAIK. If the Q5 is not released soon in the US, I might scratch it off my list alltogether.
I had every intention of buying the Q5 but after several months now of waiting and watching all the speculation I have decided to go with the Raon Everun. I still think the Q5 will be a terrific unit but I have to wonder why the interminable delays and the less than forth coming information from Cowon America. I think I smell troubles in the cookie factory and have decided to wait no longer. I may be sorry but I guess I'm just tired of being jerked around.

Time for me to have a look at this Everun I thinks [biggrin]
Everun looks cool, but it's a totally different gadget. Firstly... it's huge! lol. I can't put that in my pocket. So, for me - it's out of the game.

I have really been looking forward to the Q5, but after reading a couple of reviews about the Everun my mind is made up. So that makes us three [smile].
I probably would have bought the Q5 out of impulse, but after having all this time to think about it I've come to realise I would rarely use it....

I just checked sizeasy.com and someone already compared sizes between the everun and q5:
http://www.sizeasy.com/page/size_comparison/3853-Raon-Everun-vs-Cowon-Q5
It's bigger alright, but if the dimension are correct I think I can live with it.
If anyone want to read more about the Everun there is a quite good review at http://www.umpcportal.com (http://www.umpcportal.com/modules/news/article.php?storyid=757).
My main gripe with the everrun is its cost...
Do you know a site where you can buy it at a reasonable price in Europe?
I'm also getting tired of waiting for the Q5 to be released, so I'm starting to consider a 605Wifi.
And a comparison of sizes Everun vs Q5 vs 605wifi:

Re the cost, this is a mini computer and for all the extra features its worth the $
Not having to worry about installing stuff with windows ce etc
This guy is doing a bulk buyer order

Hes waiting for first lot of orders to arrive before he takes anymore orders

Am I going to buy the Q5?
Nope.
I just want a 60 or 80 GB X7L.
That's all.
Now that the A3 is "officially" coming out, I think the Q5 is no go for me.
Most likely the Q5 has too many features I don't want or need. No need for HD, insufficient battery life, and I'm not hot on touch screen. Buttons provide better control and feedback for easy operation.
So it'll probably be a 60GB A3 if they do come out.
Eric
I don't need most of the features of the Q5 either, but because it has a larger screen than the A3, it's still going to get my money.
I just want a place to backup my photos/video from my digi cam and also play my .divX .Xvid movies etc. 4.3" screen like the PSP minimum.
So.. Q5, A3 or Archos... what ever works out the best overall package.
Archos 605 - have to buy different plugins.. and Customer Service/qaulity control lacking, proprietory cables, has 80 and 160gb versions though
Q5 - maybe good if wifi built in, nice clean look, mini USB, USB host onboard!
A3 - USB Host on board, proven platform
[confused]

im definetly getting it, so far its the best pmp around! however this will probably be my last pmp purchase next time i get a device its gonna be UMPC -- which by then will be affordable and useable since at the moment its kind of in the beta stages. it will be cool in cowon begins to make UMPC's if they do i'll definetly get one!
p.s i think its better to get the cowon q5 than the everun -- unless your in big buissness and need to lug a laptop around i don't think you'll need it to use to extra's in it since all you will use it for is music and video get the cowon q5
why waste $2000+

Very happy with the A2. But, would also like to have a PMP with a larger screen. Going from 4 to 5" is not that big a change.
So I think I will wait for the Q7 or its equivalent.
My first post! Yay!
I'm an Archos 604 Wifi user and I will be replacing it with the Q5....main reasons....
Archos 604 touchscreen quality is just not that good
Software is awful
button layout poor
No radio
Audio quality average
No flash support
Don't get me wrong, as far as I'm concerned I had the best player on the market until the 5th Gen versions but it's still not the finished article as far as I'm concerned. From what I can tell of the Q5 it trumps the 604 in many areas.

justr a question, but when i had planned to get an archos i had wondered if it had lyric support, can you tell me if it has it?
p.s i never got it becouse of the lack of gb space
@ Mukay.
Not to hate, but who's to say the touchscreen quality of the Q5 will be that much better? I definitely hope so personally since I really want one, but you're going to switch with that assumption that it's better?
The res of the 604 is half that of the 605, I'm hoping that the Q5 is along the same lines, so hopefully much better quality than the 604. I find the brightness is low and the touchscreen gives the image a "matt" look rather than crisp...I haven't seen the 605 screen but it's apparently much better.
Lyric support...really don't have a clue to be honest, I've never tried anything like that.
