View Full Version : Q5 Aeroplane Friendly?
Silly question i know but i have no idea about using gadgets on aeroplanes etc.
I was wondering if we can use such device on a aeroplane? How about wifi and radio; will they need to be disabled first?? Im sure we cant use portable radio players in the air? again i have no idea??
Cheers. lol.

Not quite an answer to your question but there can be issues with the harddrive in portable players when an aircraft is at altitude, i have seen posts in the past (not here) talking about issues with the HD freezing inflight and others with the same device saying they have never had a prob like this.
Info regarding the types of things like use of wifi and radio ect.. should be readily available from the airline your planning to travel on though :)
erm, rather be safe then sorry. But then people do use laptops on flights.
I've used the A2 on planes without incident. Can't imagine the Q5 would be any different.

Yup can confirm this too, with a archos 504
Some Airlines are a bit funny with any sort of electrical equipment. My phone has a "Flight Mode" which means there no signals being sent or received, but the info said that phones were not to be used, even if in "Flight Mode" :-/ Defeats the entire object of Flight Mode I thought :P
Any receiving devices can't be used on airplanes. Radios, TV receptors etc... So as long as you're just listening to your music, or watching a movie that's fine. But officially you're not allowed to turn on your radio or WIFI (you won't get a signal anyway).
^ ahh thank you, yes thats was what i was expecting. As long as we can turn off wifi within Windows CE (assuming we get built in wifi) and the radio is only turned on once you select radio in the GUI menu, i will be happy.

THe airline's policy on no wifi/cell phones are excessive anyways. The odds of wifi or a cell phone crashing a plane is like one in a million.
Myself, I play my psp with wifi on against my brother all the time on an airplane. Those stewardesses can't tell anyways.

Actually, it's probably a lot less than one in a million. Can you think of one incident in the history of commercial airplanes that a radio/wi-fi device/cell phone crashed the plane? I can't... anyone else?
I saw a program where they tested the signal from mobile phones, etc. on a plane to see if it really does effect it. (Got a feeling it was MythBusters). And it didn't do anything, it only effected it when the signal was ridiculously high, which no device has that sort of strength, and it was in a small private plane.
its not so much that it will crash the plane but more that it will disturb the instruments the plane has and will affect how the pilots fly.
Its pretty safe to use anything like the A2, PSP, Laptop, Mobile Phone etc on a plane, the chances it actually interferes is so low its not worth counting, its like saying no mobile phones at a gas station, they dont do anything. Unless of course for some reason theres a wire that shorts your phone and creates a spark while theres enough fumes INSIDE your phone to ignite. But then again theres not enough oxygen in the phone so nothing happens.

It's probably a liability issue more than anything else.
And last I heard, only SENDING radio data could affect anything. Passively receiving isn't gonna interfere with the airplane controls!
At worst, you'll get a chance to eavesdrop on the flight control radio trafffic...
^ he he. ya i think im not to worry. Even so the darn plane is on auto-pilot for the majority of the flight, i dont think anything can affect that anyway.

A number of crashes have occurred in which mobile phones were suspected.
[quote]The official crash report does not mention cell phone activity as a primary cause of the crash, and instead attributes it to pilot error.[9] However, a separate investigation into the cause of the crash showed that the autopilot system malfunctioned at the same time that a passenger's cell phone on board the plane received an SMS message and another received a call. After this information was made public, a number of countries that had previously been reluctant to do so outlawed cell phones on flights (including Switzerland).[10][11][12] Some passengers on any given flight are, however, likely to forget to turn off their mobile devices.[13]/quote]

No crash has been absolutely pinned down to phone/wifi, but a few are suspect.

Another thing I'll take into consideration is whether I can use my A2 chargers with the Q5 since intention is to give the A2 to my wife and upgrade my machine. It'd be nice to be able to use the same chargers (I have 3).
Maxian T600 is looking good too. Or just buy another A2 for me and give the old one to my wife.
Decisions decisions.
