View Full Version : replaced my battery, but discharges overnight
I replaced my battery twice, both times with the LG battery as described in the threads here.
but a after I've charged it (both on USB and normal power), the battery is dead the next day, like it's discharging, even though its off.
can anyone possibly tell me what's happened?

Did you also attach the protection circuit when you replaced the battery? Are these battereis new or used?
1st time i used the original PC, this 2nd time, I used the LG batteries' PC, just to see if the same thing happened.
both batteries were new, from the guy everyone's been buying them from on ebay.

Sounds like time for some standard debugging techniques then...
1) Does it happen if you leave the case open (rules out some shorts etc).
2) Do you have a current meter you can use to see if battery really is providing current when off (there might be a little, since X5 has a clock).
3) If you charge battery and then disconnect it from everything (PITA I know) does it still hold voltage next day? (If not problem is nothing to do with X5) ..
etc.etc.
Sadly I have no meter, but I shall try the disconnection and open case tests.
I'm presently charging to full, then leaving it switched off overnight to see if it happens again.
seems like it discharges only when connect, battery inside or out.
very annoying.
Is it possible to assume that battery is messing up because I let it discharge completely until the X5 shut down after I charged it??
i've ordered a 3rd and final battery, but this is getting depressing [sad] , I think i'll just sell it and get a zen or something, shame, I loved my X5 when it was working..

Order a DS-lite battery - they seem to be working.

The DS lite battery might be working, but it sounds like this X5 may have a more fundamental fault - a short on a circuit board someplace, or a sick chip, or whatever. There =are= bits of the circuitry which are powered even when it is 'off' (like the clock) but it shouldn't flatten a battery over night .. unless it is broken,
well, the battery was very cheap, so I may as well get a DS battery, its still cheaper than a new player [unsure] .

Can you put in the old battery to see if it works? This would help you figure out if it is a battery issu, installation issue, or other problem.

the original battery? I threw it away thinking the replacement was a success.
at least if I do a fresh reinstall of something that seems to be working well for everyone, I can fully determine whats up, at least I'll know the DS battery is new, the HK bought LG battery could have been rotting on a shelf forever..
so, I got my DS battery yesterday and installed it.
I replaced the 2 thin connecting wires in case the problem was being caused by a loose connection.
Charged the battery, and YET AGAIN the damn battery is down to next to nothing after a night of being switched off.

Your X5 must be fried. either because of a component malfunction. You might have done someting awful when replacing the battery. There is not much you can do but try contacting Cowon for support. Sorry.
judging by the other guy that just got his back from cowon, it seems they're just as capable of doing whatevever it is I did, as his does the same..
I guess I need to find an X5 for sale that's had a HDD error and swap some components, or get a lower capacity unit and swap the guts into my 60gb case..
these situations would be non existent if these friggin' manufacturers allowed us to replace the battery in the same way as a nintendo DS..

I'm starting to get a bit tired of the Cowon-hate in regards to the non-replaceable battery...if that's a problem for you (in general, not any specific person) maybe you shouldn't buy the product.
You're a mod and I can't really argue, but this isn't an official forum, and because it IS a forum, I thought that we could actually discuss our opinions.
Had I known that the X5 would be discontinued, and have such high prices to change the battery, I probably WOULDN'T have bought it, but still, I did, and enjoyed it up to the point the battery started dying.
Sadly I expected people to have some kind of rational objectivity above the typical ipod-worshipping glassy eyed zealot-ism that we get elsewhere, I guess not.
The very nature of a non-official forum is that we CAN express issues with honesty without fear of censorship, so you can express your dismay at the people that are critiqueing the battery life, as can we regarding the annoyance we're experiencing, unless that's not the case, and that we must tow the line according to someone who tows the line of a company they neither work for or the company itself knows, nor cares about.
it seems the battery life issue will rear its head a lot more times now that most owners are hitting the mark where their battery is dying or are trying to replace it.
Yes it's unfortunate that mine's goosed, and it's unfortunate for the others that have fried their units, killed their HDD's or simply had to pay way over the mark for a replacement battery, and we have a right to be dismayed, and should be allowed to do so on a forum pertaining to that product.
I'm thankful to the people that have offered assistance to my plight, and i'm sure everyone else is thankful for the advice they've recieved, but don't complain when someone's unhappy with a product in such a manner that sounds like we can no longer express our opinion unless it tows COWON's company line.

If you're suggesting I"m some sort of iPod-worshipper, you're woefully mistaken. Truthfully I don't know enough about them to have an opinion either way. I avoid them for the same reasons I avoid MS products...general but not necessarily quantifiable principles.
AFAIK the battery replacement costs about $50, and I'm pretty sure I read about that on this forum somewhere. Depending on how important your X5 is to you that may or may not be considered a 'high price'. If I could get 2 more years out of my X5 for $50 I'd probably be 'happy' to pay it. It sounds like you had the option to seek out more information and neglected to pursue it, but I obviously don't know your circumstances.
Since you seem to have reacted to my post on a personal level, I will say I was not focusing on your post, and tried to emphasize that "if that's a problem for you (in general, not any specific person)", but rather to the general complaints that I've seen suggesting that it's somehow Cowon's fault that people are buying their products with non-replaceable batteries only to then complain about the batteries being non-replaceable. You know what you're getting into as far as that aspect of it goes, is all I'm saying.
The view I expressed earlier was not intended to be construed as a Moderator-level comment. It most certainly was not an attempt at censoring this thread or any users, though if insubstantial and unproductive complaints were being made on a regular basis I might feel compelled to take some level of Moderator action in regards to those complaints.
It would have been nice if you had asked me on what level I was making my post rather than assuming I was making some sort of attempt to bully you, which is how it sounds. I apologize if I have in turn misconstrued your post.
Though neither I nor any of the admins, nor the forum itself, are to my knowledge affiliated with Cowon in any official capacity, we can, have, and will take _certain_ actions upon their request, such as removing links to drivers they do not intend for public distribution. If you want to consider that censorship...well, consider this forum censored. That is the only instance I am aware of in which we have acceded to a request of theirs, however. In fact, there've been instances where information was relayed in threads that I _personally_ harbored reservations about, but kept my nose out of because I wasn't certain I should be saying anything. I really feel the comment I made in this case was rather low-key, but apparently others feel otherwise.
All I can ask is that the next time you have concerns regarding my tone you ask me what my intentions are rather than taking them as out of proportion as it seems to me you may have done.
I would ask that further posts in this thread be on-topic. Thank you.
