View Full Version : Firmware 3.50 & 1.50 Betas Released!
-Flash support!
-Larger font support in Text Viewer.
-Music selection error fixed.
-Stabilized other functions.
Get the 3.50 Beta here:
http://download.cowon.com/data/C08/D2_3.50b.zip
Edit: Tested and worked on my non-Korean D2, your mileage may vary. A flash player icon appears in the utility menu, but no flash files available in release. Downloaded clix flash lite games and played it on my D2 and it worked! The D2 can either start the flash player with emulated buttons on the screen where the clix buttons would be or with the regular touch screen interface.
Is this the korean version firmware? Is it safe to download on the non-Korean D2?
sweet! pictures?

This may sound stupid, but...what benefits does flash support bring? What kind of flash programs are we expecting to use on the D2?

wow, that's great :D
now I just have to wait for the 2.50, excellent
Wish it will support flash video soon.
Wtf with this "no we wont fix flac support" attitude?
It's been asked for a few firmwares to support 1.1.4, and nothing...

Beaware! It seems like this Beta has some serious issues with the ID3-tagging. Most ID3-tags will not be displayed at all!

I've loaded the new firmware on and I thought I would give you guys my 2 cents so far.
Flash support: I first whacked on some animation files that I have had lying around for quite some time so I tried those .SWF files first. Simple ones (such as that All Your Base are Belong to Us flash animation made years back) work without a hitch, and even some Strongbad ones are not too bad. I tried some more demanding ones and the music just cut out. For games, well, you will probably be disappointed here. I tried a couple of games over 1MB and the D2 didn't like them too much. That's not the only problem. The D2 allows you two options for controls for flash games: free-touch, or a virtual up/down/left/right control scheme. Basically, because the D2 doesn't have controls like the Clix, it's nearly impossible to play most games, as you are required in most cases to press some form of select/enter button. Shooting gallery games seem to fare pretty well.
Larger text support: I had no issues with the default font size. Now you get a choice betwen 1.0x, 1.5x and 2x. Anything greater than the default font size is way too big in my opinion as there's simply not enough room to fit a decent number of characters on screen at once.
ID3-tags: Seems to be all good at my end. Nothing more to say.
Beaware! It seems like this Beta has some serious issues with the ID3-tagging. Most ID3-tags will not be displayed at all!
These issues are now solved! [smile] By removing and reinserted my SD card the ID3-tags are now working again. The ID3 indexing which is performed upon startup must have backfired earlier.
Any link to games, anyone ?

Hi, i have tested some games and it runs fine!
You can choose btw buttons up down right left and touch screen but every game so far was made for clix so touch screen does not work.
Here you can find some clix games:

i've tried some of the iriver clix2 games and they work perfectly. but to exit them you press the "M" button rather than from the game menu. i've tried some of the U10 (predecessor to the clix2 and clix) games and they don't work as well as the clix2 games. if you go to the link mymandarin provided click on the developer's websites and you will find a few more games. i havent really played around enough to report back on whether bugs have been fixed.

I hesitate to even ask....
I'm actually quite happy with this version. Startup time seems to have been reduced by about 50% (3GB of music/vids on internal memory + an 8GB SDHC card full of music), the shuffle seems to be working sensibly, and I haven't had any problems with selecting one track and another one being played. If they've finally fixed these problems then that's fantastic.
nice one. Ive tried playing various flash files, > games and videos. videos work perfectly. Only the very basic flash games work, ive loaded flash games which require more complex buttons then up, down, left, right and they do not load. I wasent expecting much from the flash player, but its quite impressive. i will try and find more flash games apart from the iriver ones which work.

Same comments for me. No problems with mp3 or ogg tags so far. Font size is not very good, it's only resize the font, with a jaggy effect. Some flash freeze the D2, and reset is your friend. For flash games, controls are odd, sometimes barely unusable.
And as usual, take off sd card before updagrading firmware, save your radio.ini, and let enough space on internal memory.
For me : 79.8Mb free after copying music, 65Mb after booting, and 45.9Mb after putting a 1Gb sd card full of music.

Any idea whether this can be updated like the previous (x.45) firmware where recent firmware versions could be updated by just loading folders 1 and 2 on, thereby not wiping the contents of the memory? Or will i have to use all 3 folders (and wipe the memory)?
Here's hoping the shuffle is fixed!
I just used 1 and 2, seems to be fine.

I guess it would be possible, but I think Cowon would have to let developers have access to the system, in which case I think would be unlikely. But who knows? With that kind of access, the possibilities would be endless.

Well shuffle appears to be fixed! Finally! No track order for oggs yet though. It seems they've fixed the "rebuild the id3 database on any file change" bug, which means that new notepad files don't cause a massive boot time next time the player is turned on, which makes this feature usable at last! All in all a big improvement, but not perfect.
Not tried loading any flash on yet but entering the flash menu causes the music to stop playing, so evgesha2jz-ge i guess the answer is probably no...

Judging from these complaints i think i'll wait until the non-beta version comes out.
So apparently you can play games but can't listen to music at the same time? Whats the point then? I can just use my DS and listen to music at the same time. Although, i suppose this is an important feature for some, but i still can't understand why flac 1.1.4 support hasn't been added yet..(All of my music is all flac 1.1.3 now but thats besides the point). They advertise their player as supporting flac then any update that is incompatible should be a priority.

A couple of questions regarding flash games. Some people have posted links to sites with flash games. Although I can try them on-line, I can't seem to be able to figure out how to download a playable on-line flash game as an .swf file. Anyone?
Also, some of the on-line flash games use the mouse as a controller, any chance these games can use the touch-screen for control as a mouse pointer? (I know this is probably too much to ask, but there's a great flash solitaire game with mouse control)

You need to use a flash capture application that downloads the embedded .SWF file where there is no actual link. There's a few of them around such as FlashCapture.

That's up to Cowon basically to emulate a mouse cursor. Doubt it will happen though. Those games with an up, down, left, and right control scheme only work as intended, with the exception of such games as shooting games. If you stick to games made for the Clix, you shouldn't have too much trouble playing them.

you can look at your cache and download it from there.
IE.
Tools -------> Internet Options -------> General tab ----> Browsing History Settings -----> View Files -----> Sort by type -> Copy the .swf file you want.
Mozilla.
type "about:cache" withouth the speech marks into the adress tab. Go to Disk Cache device and search for the swf file. It should have a link on it. Just right click and "save target as.."
Opera.
Almost same as firefox. type "opera:cache" into address tab. search for swf and "save target as..."
Remeber to clear your cache before you do this. It will make searching for the swf file a lot simpler and faster!

Some games do work with the the mouse configuration. be sure to select the touch screen option (as opposed to the four way controller). I'll post a few games soon!

Thats very poor from Cowon. If I could sign up to their customer support I'd politely ask to fix this half arsed attempt to cover basic things like playlists and ID3 browsing. I might upgrade to 2.5b just to see if the .flv videos I have will play though.
Well the flash support seems to work fine (i have only tried clix2 games) but i cant see me ever using it unless you can listen to music at the same time as none of the games are that good you just pick it up to play (except maybe that log rolling game!) it is merely used for wasting time if your waiting for something, on a bus etc.
BTW i have had no id3 browsing problems.
Can anyone write a flash based application that will allow copying of files from the internal memory to a SD card and vice versa ? Is this possible ?

Sorry...that's not possible. Flash was never meant to be a fully fledged programming tool. It does a lot of things these says...but Flash on it's own would have no way of doing that. Besides we're talking the mobile version of Flash here which is a simpler version of the Flash you know from your pc.
Would be nice though...

For the D2's flash player, the limit of one sound playing at a time is a big disappointment for me. It seems a logical limitation of the hardware, given that the D2 was only planned as a movie and music player. But having just one sound playing at a time makes a lot of great flash movies or animations unwatchable.
Maybe the D2 has enough horsepower to downmix multiple sound sources into one.

Doesn't it work like every other site?
I usually view the source code, search for "swf" and look for "<param name=movie>" or something similiar and then copy that value, concatenate the url with the value, google the link and right click -> save as.
Or are you talking about something else?

Just found something that I think some people may like the sound of! While going through the pictures\icons\whateveryouwanttocallthem in the firmware i noticed icons for "Sub - Boundary" , "D - Boundary" , and "M - Boundary"
They arent options "yet" when you click boundary but maybe its a sound for the next firmware? or maybe when 3.50 comes out? Not sure what "D" and "M" are for but we'll see soon i hope!
just thought id share with all!

Good question.
'
I'm using 3.50b and so far so good. I had to re-upload my music because of some id3 tags not reading properly. Other than that3.50b is working fine for me.
I'm sure it is, but after reading about the issues regarding the 3.45 alpha and some of cowons responses i'd rather cover my ass and stick to my regional firmware in case anything should go wrong..
Well the problem with 3.45 was a strange one. After uploading around 20 albums I couldn't start the player. Memory issues I guess. I completely filled my player lastnight, leaving only 10MB and the player still started. :) as for 2.xx vs. 3.xx, I hear you. I myself kinda like having the dictionary so it's worth it for me.
I would love a translator you know, like english to french>italian>spannish>dutch etc that'd make the ver. 3 firmware worth it to me

Mount the D2 as a USB mass storage device on your computer, and then just move all your music folders into a new top-level folder. The D2 will still find them, but because their file specifications will have changed, it won't know they're the same files, and will spend ages re-indexing everything.
I learned this by accident, but you can use it for good, not evil. [smile]

Have you fdownloaded and installed the dictionary files?
The firmware does not contain the dictionary - it just enables the option. To actually have access to it, you must download the dictionary files ( full (with korean pronounciation, ~500 megs) or lite (just the text, ~40 megs) ) and put them in the /POWERDICT folder of your D2.
A link to the files can be found in thr D2 info and tips thread.

I'm guessing you guys already checked the language setting? Maybe the firmware upgrade didn't go through properly?
I'm thinking the firmware didn't go well either. I installed just 1&2 (no zero, although it erased my library anyway[mad] ) and between the two files during the shutdown and fire up phase I got a "colorful" (read; lots of colorful horizontal lines) screen with the prompt to pick a language. I was so worried about bricking the D2 that I just shut down and installed the rest of the package. I never got the language prompt again.
Is there a way I can change languages w/o re-installing the firmware? If someone can give me a step by step (knowing that I cannot read the prompts) I would be beholdin.....
Simplyblue
06-11-2007, 12:18
Well I don't have pictures but here's how you reach the language selection -
Main Screen
- 'Settings' - Bottom-right Icon
- 'Display' - 2nd Icon from the left in the top row
- 'Language' - First option in the list
Though I'd be inclined to reinstall the firmware. [wink] 1&2 wiped out my stuff too so backup would be advisable.
It worked! A big wet kiss in your general direction![biggrin]

I found a bug with 3.50 . When I pause a song then browse the library and pick another song. The song I was playing continues but under the name of the new song. No biggy but annoying.
yep, that bug is in the 2.50beta as well, kinda sucks really.
I dunno if it's just me but has anyone else noticed a change in their FM radio sound quality with v3.5? It sounds worse. I remember when I got my D2 for the first time and the radio sound quality was terrible. Then they fixed it and it sounded great after the next update. But the radio now once again sounds like it did in one of the earlier versions with the warping background noise. I would switch to an older version to check but I don't want to waste time reloading all my files.
Its taking long for the nonbeta [cry]
well, im taking that as a good sign. that means they are trying real hard to fix many problems at once. or at least sort out many big problems. especially since many hear said they've been emailing cowon with special requests like fix main problems first (main advertised functions).
- i think one reason why they are taking long is fixing the flash utility. they are making D2 supported games. but for me, an option to listen to music while playing a game is a plus.
- other is music playback (browsing another song and it wont play)
- as others want maybe newest flac
- notepad, using different templates, etc. its really becoming useful.
- and hopefully, my ultimate wish - gapless playback (which i highly doubt will happen), i'm still using my rio karma (the ultimate player) as my home system because of gapless.
but yeah, its been 3 weeks now for the beta korean firmware. and about 2 wks for international one. hopefully it'll be coming around some time next week or latest 2wks from now. and there better be some major improvements or there will be an uproar.
Wish it will support flash video soon.
Flash Lite 2.1 doesn't supprot video... Flash Lite 3.0 (TBR) will support video, hopefully Cowon will update the firmware when released...
