View Full Version : Which SDHC card provides FASTEST boot-up time for D2?

Hi!

I am considering to get an 8GB SDHC card for my D2, and I'm tossing between 3 brands: ADATA, Kingston, and Transcend

One of the things that's important to me in choosing an SDHC card is that it must provide fast boot-up time for D2. Does anybody know what the actual boot-up times are when each of these 3 different cards are inserted into the D2? I'm assuming that I will be filling up most of the 8GB capacity with MP3 music.

Also, just wondering whether the different classes of cards (2, 4 or 6) would make a difference to the boot-up times.

Finally, I am also happy to hear from anyone with other SDHC brands if they've experienced fast (or slow) boot-up times with their player.

Thanks heaps [biggrin]

I just purchased a D2, and I got a Class2 8Gb SDHC card with it. The boot up time isn't unbearably slow (not the fastest either), but nothing I can't live with.
When I got it last week, and over the weekend I copied maybe 5Gb of music to the card (this was slow). Writing to the player's onboard memory was fast, but since I had a Class 2 card (I was using a USB 2 port and a very fast processor), it still took over 40 min to copy.
After I disconnected it, the initial startup was very, very slow, (again the Class 2 card I'm guessing). After this was done, when I turn it on, it is not super fast, but not slow enough to be a bother. Example this morning, it was fast, but last night, after disconnecting it from the PC, it went through the very slow process of updating.
The copying music to the card was really slow, but Class 2 cards are cheaper than the higher Class cards (although flash memory is dropping in price, so this will change) so I will live, as I didn't want to spend the fortune on the card.
You will notice slow times on a Class 2 card.
Class 2=2MB/s speed
Class 4=4MB/s speed
Class 6=6MB/s speed

I have an adata and a transcend 8gb, the transcend is faster to load but not by much, 15 and 20 seconds respectfully. Once the sd card is loaded and you turn it off it and then back on it loads quickly as the data base is built, the slow loading is only when you take out the sd card and insert it again if that make sense.

Unless your impatient and will be changing data on the cards regally Its worth getting a higher class card, mine are both class 2, i never change much just add every now and then.

Thanks for the responses!

So basically, am I right to say that the ADATA cards, for example, is ONLY noticably slower in boot-up time than the Transcend cards when the database of the card is being built for the FIRST time.. ie. When you just transferred some new songs onto the card.

But after you turn the player off and back on again for a SECOND time, there wouldn't be AS MUCH noticeable of a difference between the two brands, since both cards provide a much faster boot-up response anyway, and the difference between them would become negligible?

Spot on there, I think the differance in price was $10-20 I cant remember but I beleive Transcend have a life time warranty? Check it out

you won't notice any diff with different cards as the benefits of SDHC cards will only be noticed in actual transfers with your SDHC card reader. The D2 is not a SDHC card reader it only be made to recognise SDHC cards via the firmware.

As a side issue i have even noticed the a class 2 (standard) 2gb SD card reads faster in a SDHC card reader.

Its crazy yeah!, I paid $10 or something for my sdhc card reader and this is way quicker than the d2 itself.

Thanks didnt know that!

I finally decided to order an 8GB Class 2 ADATA card for $66 in total including shipping costs on ebay.. thought it was good value.

But anyway, I was just wondering whether it's worth buying a SDHC card reader.
How much faster will I be able to transfer music from my PC to the SDHC card using a card reader, rather than using only the D2 itself??
Is it twice as fast? One and a half times as fast? Or is it barely noticable?
Keep in mind that my card is only class 2, so i assume transfer speed won't be that fast anyway.

And to mikey: which card reader do you have? Do all SDHC card readers have the same transfer speeds if I put my SDHC card in?
I was thinking of getting the following:

Any other suggestions?
Thanks

I bought this one, they are probably twice as fast as accessing via d2, I am abit paranoid about leaving a dap connected via usb for too long, its most likely safe but previous devices ive had seem to heat up so as i said paranoid. [blush] Plus its more convenient for me as all my internal memory is full and so are my 2 x8gb cards and another 4gb card, I have to admit Im over carrying sd cards with me but there is no decent hard drive player out there that has this battery life and is drag and drop so I have no choice, so bring on the 32gb cards[yes]

Basically, I bidded for my card on ebay, and it was lucky for me that I got a good deal.
I guess all you need to do is a quick search for '8gb sd adata' and look for "diamondmemory" as the seller. They have plenty of 8gb adata cards for auction regularly.
Hope that helps [smile]

Isn't there a $4.99 extra charge for shipping costs on top of that price?
Anyway I tried looking at that site, but I don't think they ship it to Australia where I reside in.

Anyway, I received my ADATA 8GB Class 2 card.
I realised that before I formatted the card, the boot-up speed of the D2 was 4 seconds with the card inserted... but however AFTER i formatted the card, the boot-up speed had increased to 7 seconds.
On both occasions, there was no data on the card at all.

Should I have formatted the card in the first place? And has anybody else noticed the difference?

Just as mentioned everytime you remove, add or delete content it will build the data base everytime. Even if its empty
I didnt format any of the cards as they read straight away.

I've got a Transcend 4GB SDHC Class6 card (full) and my D2 will start in 3 sec, ye, really fast [toungue]

currently, my Transcend 8GB SCHC Class2 (with about 1GB free) and my D2 4GB (with about 300mb free) starts in 4 dots.

Just tested my transcend sdhc class 6 on my d2 and it started in the same time as hibell's card. I do think the speed difference is noticeable with the sdhc card readers, that's why when i transfer music to my sdhc I use the media card reader on my laptop

They're all very impressive boot-up times.
I still don't understand why formatting my ADATA SDHC card actually slowed the boot-up time of my player. Now I'm starting to regret formatting my card in the first place. It not only wasn't necessary, but also slowed the boot-up time everytime I turn the player on - (it was 4 seconds boot-up time before I formatted.. and now it's consistently 7 to 8 seconds). I have not yet put any content onto the card, and I have not taken the card out of the D2 since, so allowing time to rebuild the content of the card is not an issue here.
Anyway, just wondering whether anyone has encountered that problem? Is there any way that I can "de-format" my card so that it returns to its original state?
