View Full Version : AC Adapter appears not to be charging the D2?

Hi everyone. I received my D2 a few days ago. I ordered the metal skins & the invisihield full body armor ahead of time. When the unit arrived I applied them on this little virgin unit. I did the same with my A2 & it still looks & runs brand new![smile]

Anyway, everything seems to be running well except for charging using the AC adapter. Nothing happens. The unit doesn't turn on, the adapter does not get warm, & the battery area stays just as cool. I tried leaving it on for 3 hrs (with battery meter showing half a charge). I disconnected the ac adapter and booted it up. The battery level meter didn't budge! BTW; The AC adapter does make the 60Hz hum though.

The manual doesn't mention anything except for saying a full charge takes 3.5 hrs.

Can someone tell me what indications should be showing and/or tell what the hell I'm doing wrong?[wacko]

TIA

your adapter may be faulty.

When you plug your D2 into the AC the D2 will turn on and large greenish battery icon will appear in the centre of the screen, the battery icon will fill and continue doing cycles of filling until the battery is full, then it will remain full and say battery full below the icon.

Thanks for replying so quickly Dominic!

That is what I approximately expected it to behave like also. The description you gave looks like what my iaudio 6 looks like when it is charging as well. There is an animated ''glass half-full'' icon that says it is charging. Then when fully charged it is an animated "glass-full'' icon.

Just for kicks last night, I did leave the ac adapter connected all night. Still no
increase in the charge status. I concur with you that the ac charger is probably dead. I would have checked the voltages myself with a DVM but there is no way that I can get probes in that tiny connector!

I'm going to try to convince COWON to replace the charger ONLY. Wish me luck, because I already placed the metal skin & invisishield full body armor on it. I DON"T want to take that all off to send it in. [cursing]

One quick thought though. I immediately installed firmware ver 2.46 final on the D2 when I received it. Do you think that there is ANY chance that this could be the problem? I am 99 percent sure that this is strictly a hardware problem completely independent of any small firmware changes. But I put the question out there...

Nah, pretty sure you've got yourself a bum charger. I hope you'll be able to get it exchanged.

There could be an issue with the firmware, actually, by pure coincidence when I plugged in my D2 to charge today nothing happened, but then I disconnected the AC from both the mains and the D2, then reattached and it worked fine, so there is the outside chance taht it could be a bug in V2.46...

Thanks Dominic;

I already contacted COWON & got a RMA#. They'll let me send in just the ac adapter after all! [biggrin]

But, I haven't left for the post office yet to send it back. I have tried though the process you had talked about, but no luck.

BEFORE I send it in, I think I'll try to put the original firmware ver 2.21 in it & retest.

I'll let you all know in a little while how this all shakes out. It just may help others with similar problems.

Thanks Again Everyone!

Latest Update...

1) I did try going back to ver 2.41 in firmware.

2) Discharged it to a noticeable level (this took awhile, even in movie mode. Good Battery!)

3) Hooked up the ac adapter. Nothing... Blank screen.

I am 99.9% sure that it is now a defective & dead ac adapter. Happily though, like I said previously, they told me that I could just send them the adapter & keep the rest here. [thumbsup]

Thanks everyone again. When I get the ac adapter back, (in 2-3 weeks), I'll update the result to you.

Bye for now...

I too just received my D2 5 days ago and have the exact same problemes..

Cannot charge from AC wall.

Thoughts?

surely you can read above if your problems are exactly the same?

While I rather share the sentiment, the tone could probably be a bit less snarky. :)

yes it could have been, I apologise.
In future would you mind PM'ing me if you have any issues doniago rather than drawing a thread off topic.
Thank you.

I will endeavor to, though I sometimes think it's prudent to post such one-shot not-harsh messages in public so that people who might believe there's a problem are given visible evidence that it's been addressed. Serious stuff normally does get PM'ed.

'Nuff said? :)

Same problem here :(

Hi guys;

I thought that I was the ONLY one having this problem.

Now from reading above, at least one other of you, (Nandgate), are having the identical problem as me.

Nandgate, Did you try different firmware versions as I did? I tried V2.46 then 2.41.

Charging via USB works fine.

I already sent the charger itself back to them yesterday. Waiting to hear from them.

This may be a bad sign though. I can't believe that 2 chargers are bad on units received this close together. I got my D2 last week. I would have used my DVM to take voltages myself but there is NO way that I could get probes in that little connector!

ANY feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Astro.

I recieved my unit 17 may 2007 from 'MiniDisc' in Sydney Australia.

Have informed them twice about the issue of no AC charge - still waiting for firm response.

Currently using fw 2.46 and a bit hesitant about switching to an earlier fw after reading other posts on this forum...

Hi Nandgate;

Thanks for replying so quickly!

Looks like this might be a "real" issue.

Anyone out there see a similar problem with their D2's?

Hi Guys,

I was the one who originally started this thread.

The AC Adapter REALLY was dead from the factory!

I just received it back, plugged it in, & presto. Unit says "charging". Before, it was just a black screen when connected.

To quell any doubts to this I just wanted to say that I have not changed anything at all with the D2 itself. The firmware has not been touched. It is, & has been V 2.46 all along. So it defeniteley WAS the AC adapter after all!

So heads up my friends to all who have & are going to purchase this unit. It may help you, as well.

P.S.
As a Caveat regarding their service:
I got the unit back with NO paperwork at all. I mean nothing! Just the AC Adapter in a plain box, & that's it. Is this typical? Curious...
BTW: I also own an A2 & an iaudio 6 & have never had to send them in for repair. Well, as of yet, anyway.
