Does 2.46 fix the sync issues with sound/video?
Which guide should i use? I hava the 2.45b version now but i can only find 2 guides, one for earlier 2.41 users and one for 2.41 users. Anybody know which i should use?
if by guide you mean installation instructions, then they're on the linked page above.

tobbis means that there are no installation instructions for Firmware 2.45b.
I'am dealing with the same issue, bricks are for walls ;-)

Maybe I'm wrong, but shouln't the headers for the instructions read:
1.- Instructions for those with version earlier than 2.41
2.- Instructions for those with versions 2.41 "and" later
From my experience using the second set of instructions (content of folders 1 and 2) spares you from having the firmware upgrade process format your D2 using the content of folder 0. Please, correct me if I'm wrong.
I may be wrong, but this is how I believe the installation instructions are meant to be.
If you have a firmware version earlier than 2.41, then new firmware will require a 3-step procedure (folder 0, then 1, then 2)
If you have 2.41 or newer, then it is only a 2-step procedure (folder 1 then 2)
This is the way that I have interpreted the instructions anyway, and unless i hear otherwise, when i upgrade from 2.45b to 2.46 tonight I only plan to use folders 1 & 2.
EDIT: It appears tamanaco and I were typing practically the same post at the same time :)

Took the plunge... Installed 2.46 using the second set of instructions (Content of folders 1 and 2) The D2 firmware was updated and all my content is still there. The D2 was "not" formatted.
Now I'm curious about the "Stabilized other functions" listed in first post.
Arrrgg!... gotta go to work again.
I upgraded to 2.46 from 2.41 using the right installation guide (i think) and it works great but nothing on the D2 was deleted. All my music pictures and movies remained. Is this normal?
the main stabilization I am hoping for is the split-second video/audio synch issue
in 2.45b the audio track of my videos are about a 1/4 second ahead of the video. it's especially noticeable in action scenes with gunfire and explosions
I'll post my findings later on when i get home and upgrade the firmware

I think that's the point of the second update procedure. If you choose the 3-step one everything will get deleted. And if you look at some of the files in this update you will notice that a couple of them are actually quite old so you should have them installed already.
All of my content is intact after only using the 1 and 2 folder files to upgrade my player

I used the method for 2.41 with 2.45b, till now no problems, the booting seems to take longer than before but maybe thats my imagination.

Just did 2.54b > 2.46 with only folders 1 and 2, worked like a charm, still have all my mp3s and system files (but you lose most of your "Setup" settings).
Bootup speed is same as before, 3 dots and then my startup logo.
my start up time is a full circle, using an Adata 8gb class2 card with 2100 tracks on it.... quite slow unfortunately. It would be nice if it was faster. But its not a deal breaker.

has anyone tried going from 3.45 to 2.46 using only folders 1 and 2?
i have done 2.45b to 2.46 with folders 1 & 2
All my music, video and pictures were kept
not sure I would like to try going from the 3.x to 2.x without the full 3 steps though

i was using the version 2.21 and installed 2.46 now , it works but my total space got less. It was 1.85GB before and now seems 1.75GB [confused]
why is it?[surrend]

A VERY IMPORTANT QUESTION,
Which set of instructions must we apply when upgrading from 2.45b ???
If we follow the first way folder 0,1,2 does it harm the D2?
What is the meaning of these ways, why earlier 2.41 and for 2.41
Why COWON makes grammar fault??? EARLIER THAN 2.41 ok but the second way is??? what is it for only 2.41 or later also???

A few members, including me, used the 2.41 method to get from 2.45b to 2.46 without any problems. In this thread are posts with positive results.
It would be nice though if Cowon was clear about this.

You said you lost 100Mb in this firmware...if for Cowon D2 4Gb maybe a little lost, but for 2Gb is horrible..

A bug?? When i try to add a whole folder to the DPL (not browsing folders but in the Id3tags), it does not do anything, no song is added.
Gapless has come, right?? Choosing the option "track" in Skip length..
Why canīt we play a whole folder (which may has others folders inside) when we are browsing folders, whithout the obligation of add it to a DPL??
I think the boot up is a little slower, (I have an 8 gig sdhc card) it seems to take four or five circles till startup... not a real problem though...
I noticed a capacity decrease when I went from 2.21 to 2.41 also.
My "2GB" D2 shows a capacity of 1.77 GB @ 2.41.

What was it before upgrading?
2gb isnt 2gb anyway for anything you buy as 1 gb is 1024mb

I had 2.45b firmware and I upgradedd to 2.46. Everything works fine but ofcourse all data were gone. Try 'clear memory' function and you will get 1800k out of 1845k, which is the maximum you can get with 2.46 firmware and a completely empty D2 2gb.

2.41 -> 2.46 with folder 1 and 2 at the same time...
everything works fine!

I suspect the decrease in available memory is a result of the changes/upgrades made to the GUI/Touch interface between 2.21 and 2.41

no issues here i'm glad to say.

Slow oppening problem (full circle ) but seems stable for other options.
WOW....ID3 tag browsing works now..[thumbsup] ...
Except I still have parentheses with numbers inside them in front of the genre's...weird because I have other mp3 players and genres don't have numbers inside parentheses..just my Cowon players..

Does this version also have dictionary?

No! no dictionary in 2.46.
Anyone else who has problems with deleting files with 2.46?
I always get that messege saying that "delete is not supported whilst in musicbrowse" or simular. Even when I am in folder browse or in video.
Richard.John
05-19-2007, 09:57
I have also noticed that I cannot delete files as well.
"Delete not supported" only happened to me the first time I tried deleting a file, now it's working again.
Bootup time seems only slightly slower than 3.45b - three dots of the circle instead of two, for me.
BTW - upgraded from 3.45b to 2.46 with the second method, the one-step upgrade. Worked fine and didn't delete my files. EQ/BBE and all other settings are lost, however.
--------
Is it only me, or is it really depressing that 50% of the changelog for 2.46 on Cowon's website deals with bugfixes for that crappy notepad nonsense, and they still didn't address any of the longstanding and easy to fix issues, like a 24 hour clock, longer sleep timer than 60 minutes, or a "real" resume function? That notepad tinkertoy certainly isn't the feature why I bought the D2... Cowon firmware codemonkeys, get your act together already!
- Support to use Notepad and Radio mode at the same time (impossible to use Music or Video mode)
- Added the Yellow Pen color
- Support to confirm if you delete a notepad
- Fixed the index error of music/movie after using Notepad

No it is not just you that gets depressed with that fact. It is maybe time to try and get a messege thrue to cowon global with a strong recomendation to them to sort out the problems and annoyances before they spend any more time on extras.
I mean extras are fun, but thats not why I bought it. Music and video is why.

I agree 100%. Most important fixes, IMHO:
1. Gapless playback
2. Make ID3 browsing/playback work same as folder browsing, i.e. obey me if I change boundary. Perhaps also rename "boundary folder" to "boundary album" when in ID3 browsing mode.
3. Real resume, i.e. on startup, resume playback immediately and automatically.
4. When ID3 browsing, sort Ogg tracks by track number, not alphabetically.
I'm still using 2.41, and so far the only new feature that has sounded interesting is the adjustable frequency EQ. I'll see when I get round to updating. I might just wait a bit more.

Write emails to cowon. I dropped them a pretty lengthy email with some of my reccommendations, and they did reply, and said that it has been passed onto the people dealing with the firmware. (And I hope they weren't lying to placate me ;P)
While cowon might not listen to all our suggestions, then they would at least be aware of what the community wants.
On the other hand, showering them with a ton of emails will probably juat make Cowon ignore most of them; so keeping it concise and sticking to the most pressing issues is probably a good idea.
I just noticed a really moronic bug about file deletion.
Deleting folders only works on empty folders on the SD card, but works normally on the internal memory.
When trying to delete a folder containing files on the SD card, the delete-confirmation box pops up, I select "yes" - but the folder doesn't get deleted. After I delete every single MP3 in the folder, I can delete the folder.
On the D2's internal memory, the deletion of folders that contain audio or video files simply works as it's supposed to be...

emjay1, what exactly do you mean "delete the genre tag in the id3v1.1"??
When I open MP3tag it shows all my songs are version 2.3....there are no version 1 tags....?
Those parentheses with numbers in front of the genre really bothers me...if anyone could tell me exactly how to get rid of them it would be greatly appreciated..or even why they are there...
Thanks emjay1...if you could...maybe you could tell me more..[smile]

Whats so important about being able to delete a file on the run?, I see it as you cant add anything to the d2 unless its plugged into your computer, so do it then! Im not criticizing just wondering

I guess it for when you discover you've accidentally synched some Vogon Poetry to your D2 SD card, and you want to make sure it never comes up in the playlist ever again.
Or when you remember you've just recorded this afternoon on the SD card, and your spouse (who was not involved) is going to borrow the player real soon...

I'm asking why it does work on the internal memory - but not on the SD card.
I'm listening to lots of audio books/radio plays stored on the SD card, and I like to delete them as soon as I'm finished with them - so I know which one I still have before me. And it's kinda irritating having to delete 10-100 files, instead of one folder...
There is no reason why this works internally, but not on the SD card - for my usage it's quite an annoying bug. That it's definitely a bug is shown by the fact that when trying to delete a folder on the card, the "delete yes/no" dialogue appears (and not a message saying "deleting folders is not supported on the SD card") - but the folder won't be deleted.

Just installed and removed 2.46 from my D2 because of anther SD card problem. Here it is:
There is something buggy with MTP and SD card support under 2.46. I use YahooMusic subscription music for a significant portion of my portable music collection. After installing 2.46 on my D2:
All my album art disappeared and
My D2 would no longer play subscription music, only music I ripped myself.
What was interesting was everything worked fine when I loaded sample music files into internal memory, but, as soon as I loaded the same test music files into SD/external memory, the album art disappeared and copy protected WMA files would not play.
In fact, I've had the same problem with every D2 firmware release above 2.41b. 2.41b works fine but lacks the FW enhancements found in 2.46. Consequently I just "flashed back" to 2.41b.
I really wish Cowon could keep the stuff that's working well consistent when enhancing their FW with new features. This type of inconsistency really is a barrier to a great player for those less technically inclined! [thumbdwn]
Yep, nothing's write protected...
Does it work normally for you?
only the video files...
New firmware completely stable for me so far.
One thing, can you change the background color in NotePad?

With MP3Tag, you can see if your files have V1 or V2 or both IDTags by looking at the column Tag.
To delete only IDTag V1 and keeping the V2:
* first edit the options, and in ID3 tag, section Remove, select V1 and unselect V2.
* after validating your options, select the mp3 entry and erase the tag (contextual menu or red cross on the toolbar)
Now, the bad news: unfortunately (at least for me) removing V1 information didn't solve the problem.
The problem seems not related to V1 put rather to a wrong information stored as IDTag. I generate my mp3 with mediamonkey V2.5.5 (from FLAC) and all seems OK (in mediamonkey and even in MP3Tag) but, in D2, I got numbers in front of genre. You can also see these numbers in jetAudio.
And to finish, the good news: I rewrite my tag informations with MP3Tag (just select the mp3, reselect the genre and save) and now it is OK in jetAudio. I hope it will be OK on my D2 (not yet tested).
This genre tagging problem with the parentheses and numbers instead of actual genre names happened with my OGG files, as well. (Most of my music is in OGG format.)
My D2 actually hung up on me last night during start-up and after using the pin to reboot, I lost all my files! "No music," it says... Crap. So I'll take it as a sign to reinstall this new firmware... but I really want this genre tag thing resolved ASAP.[cursing]

It won't delete the firmware, as this is needed to boot up the device. It would be a bit strange if a format deleted your firmware as well. Without a firmware, you can't boot. And to perform a firmware flash (whether it's an upgrade or total new one) you need to boot first. Got the picture? ;)
New firmware completely stable for me so far.
One thing, can you change the background color in NotePad?
Not that I know of. I can only find a color button for the pen, but no button saying "more" or "settings". Not even in the Settings section from the main menu.
Does anyone know if the D2 supports the tag called Album Artist? I have lots of movie soundtrack CD's and compilation CD's that I've marked "VA / OST" as Album Artist. The normal "Artist" tag is labelled according to the artist of that specific song. Now I can only browse through the albums within the D2's library, but I need to skip most of them because they're not what I'm looking for and sometimes I mistake a normal CD for an OST or compilation.
I would like to have the option to not pick the artist, but the album artist. When I pick the artist, I will get only one or two songs, which isn't what I want.
It's not a big deal as I can use folder browsing as an alternative, but I would like to use album artist within the library.

Hi.
I'm a new owner of a D2. Had it just 6 days. It came with firmware 2.21 and after getting used to the features on that I decided I'd go for an upgrade.
I now have a D2 that doesn't do anything!
Any help would be much appreciated.
I followed the instructions on cowon.com for "earlier 2.41" users. i.e. 0, 1 then 2
The 0 stage worked fine but after reconnecting after copying the file from folder 1 my computer now says "The disk in drive E: is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" I'm kinda guessing no but what else is there to do at this stage?
I now can't connect to the D2 to try the firmware update again.
I disconnected the D2 again and tried a couple more power-cycles and even a reset to no avail.
What are my options now, please?
TIA

Update: resaving genre information with MP3Tag solves the problem. No more numbers in front of genre information [thumbsup]
Even for OGGs? I realized that the problem, for me at least, is not only the parentheses/numbers coding for genre tags, but that the D2 isn't listing ANY of my OGG files when I search by genre! Only music in MP3 format shows up. Help please?

Enlighten me.....
I use the delete option all the time. I have a bunch of Podcasts that I subscribe to with mypodder, and being able to delete the ones I've listened to is the only way for me not to have to guess which ones I have and have not listened to later.
Yeah, deleting files does work, but it doesn't work to delete non-empty folders on the SD card - that only works on the internal memory (for me)...

Does 2.46 fix the sync issues with sound/video?

I'm using 2.46 and I still notice video sync problems, especially if skipping through it or resuming from a video bookmark
only seems to stay in perfect sync if watched from the beginning each time.

I downgraded from 3.41 to 2.46 and boy do I miss my dictionary. [sad] I didn't want to harm the player by using firmware recommended for Korean models. And I thought that if I were to send it in for repair, Cowon might not do it because I wasn't using the recommended fw. [confused]
Anyway, I feel that a dictionary is more useful to me than a notepad. Maybe I'll switch back.
Hi!
I recently upgraded to 2.46 from factory 2.21 firmware, because I noticed some issues with xvid video files (green "moving" artifacts, etc). It works fine, however one needs to get used to it:
I also noticed that the power up time is only 4 or 5 circles when you change the layout of the Music directory, or delete/add files and I think it is because of the new media library function, and it caches all music data, and when there is no change the boot up is one circle. I first missed the Cowon logo, which is unfortunately cannot be replaced at the moment, because there is no logo file on the cowon global webpage for D2 and JetShell denies to download the logo available on the website. I don't care anyway.
New features work fine, notepad is great fun. As they said you cannot use music player or video player at the same time, only radio.
Advices for 2.21 firmware users.
Use the 3 directory method. I connected the USB cable only at the first two steps, at the final step I powered on the device and then let it do the rest (it doesn't make any difference anyway). I noticed that the FM tuner has better receipt (just a bit, it was ok), noticable via the AutoScan function (i'm in Europe). The Media Library works fine too. The directory for movies is changed, so do not use the auto copy function, because the directory is now called "VIDEO". JetEffect default is now 2 BBE and 6 M3B. I changed it back to 3 and 7. I tried new feauters like holdoff mode and resume, they work fine. Had no experience regarding freezes fortunately.
Things to be concerned about the upgrade(2.21):
the Cowon logo will disappear
bootup time will be slower (full circle, 4-5 secs) when uploading new files on the device (i haven't tried SD card)
bootup is one circle when no change in music files
No noticable space decrease for me(1824 total/1867 theoretically)
equalizer is set to "pop" to default which i think sucks, I always use "Normal", i recommend so
So far I recommend upgrading to the newer version
have fun, enjoy this great product!
