View Full Version : X5 and RAW file format
I owe Minolta A1 and i shot photos only in RAW. I wanna use X5 as storage disk for my photos (of course for MP3 especially :D ). Will X5 be able too show me (on LCD)images saved in RAW file format ?

RAW is (I think) a RAW TIFF Image.
This is not listed as a supported format.
They are: MPEG1/2/2.5 Layer 3, WMA, OGG, ASF, FLAC,
WAV (11/22/44Khz,16Bit, MONO/STEREO),
XviD MPEG 4 Video, JPEG

I doubt it. AFAIK RAW is a very rare/unpopular format. Why btw? JPEG files are so much smaller.

RAW is lossless, but it's such a tiny screen, it won't make any difference if it's in raw or jpg
RAW is very popular among photographers. Jpeg's are smaller but using RAW digital photographers can tune up their images without losing quality and then convert it into JPEG.
En_croute, between Raw and Tiff file format is huge difference. They are not the same.
JPEGs lose alot of quality in their compression. He isn't just going to want to see the pictures on the X5 though, he will want to take it off onto his computer. But you can view the photos on the camera before you load them off the device so I don't see a great benifit in it. However, no mp3 player will support a format such as TIFF or RAW.

I really am not understanding the logic of this questiion. The X5 has a TINY LCD screen so why would you want to view the RAW images on it??? The question would make sense if it was regarding the A2 with it's nice big LCD.
If you wanted to see which images you want to transfer to a PC then just hook it up to a PC and look at them in thumnail form for your USB X5 HDD on your PC monitor.
BTW RAW images can only be viewed by the camera you're using or the software that allows you to view them that came with the camera. Expecting any other device to be able to read RAW images doesn't make any sense at all.
Damn guys, before making his question seem silly, try to think through with his logic first. He probably wanted to use the USB on-the-go feature to off-load the raw pictures onto his x5, and THEN view them on the x5 if possible before he loaded them onto a computer. This could be useful if he were taking pictures at an important event and other people wanted to see the pics he had taken in the morning or something. It just so happens that right now that whole situation is a technical impossibility... Cut'em some slack though...

That still doesn't make any sense. First of all you wouldn't be able to see much on that tiny little LCD. Second if you wanted to transfer pics from the X5 to the PC then you'd have to hook up the X5 to a PC anyway. In that case you'll have access to all the pics on the X5 anyway and can actually see detail on the PC monitor. I can understand if you wanted to see the pics without a PC so that you can immediately delete them from the X5 and save space but with 20G who cares about space? Even a PC cannot read RAW images without the correct software so expecting a portable MP3 player with a tiny screen to do what a PC cannot do does not make ANY sense at all.
it's a good question- it would still be nice to see the image as a reminder regardless of whether or not it was much better than seeing it on the lcd of the digicam. once you've offloaded hundreds of images, it's still nice to see what exactly is what. i doubt this feature will be available on the x5 because the market for people who need it is too small.
as a side note, there are products like the epson p-2000 that are designed specifically for storing and viewing RAW photos (compatible with most high end cameras). they have much larger and better lcd screens for viewing and even can play mp3's and other media (although not their strength- don't plan on giving up your current mp3 or pmp player for it).

Can't the M3/M5/X5 store unsupported file types? So you could transfer RAW files to it for storage.

Yes but the question was if one could view the RAW files on the built-in LCD.
im going to buy X5 for MP3 listening and fotographics files storing. Showing these files on LCD will be for me an additional function. It's not the main reason for buying X5...
Shit happens.. i can live without it :D

Thanks for that, I tend to use JPEG, so never really investigated RAW.

What would be possible is...if this is truly a storage device then you can store any file format on the device however not be able to view it or use it untill is is downloaded to you computer.

I know :-)
The whole point was being able to view the photos, raw or not, on the interim between moving them from the camera (to make more room to take more photos) and putting them on the pc(the final destination). The point is to view them in the transition, just to be able to review your overall shots, like say if you were going to be out all day and only got back to your pc late at night, but wanted to see a 9am pic at 4:30pm...

You can view them if they're in JPG, BMP, etc. format.

I didn't know it supported BMP.
Surely you could review them before moving them to the X5 for storage???
