For both I5 and G3
1. How many characters are on the I5, G3 displays?
This Question stems from the fact that my filenames are sometimes longer than needs to be.

2. Does the display scroll when there is a large filename? Does it scroll in Browser Mode?
Like when you file browser it, do the filenames scroll? It doesnt matter if you have a 4 line display if you can only see.

Not very informative.

3. is the new A5 chipset different from its brethren? I need to know these chipsets: A5, any model; the G3, 1 gig and 2 gig versions.

4. Can you use the Usb storage in these devices without a battery?

Please Answer if you have the G3 or I5 in 512, 1 gigabyte, 2 gigabyte models.

1. About 15. The font used is not monospaced.
2. In play mode, scrolls only the song name.
It scrolls whatever is selected in browse mode. So if you have multiple folders with similar names (I've now gotten lazy and began using '/Artist [Album/Disc]/Number Song' for one less folder level to navigate), you can wait a couple seconds and see which one you're on. One of my nit-pick gripes of the player is that, IMO, they should have made it a 256x64 display, for somewhat better browsing.
3. No. The I5, U2, and G3 use the same chipsets, AFAIK. The display, controls, size, and battery should be the only differences of any kind between the U2, G3, and I5.
4. No. The player needs a functional battery to boot up, even in transfer mode. I've had no problems using a battery when it complained of low battery, though, so I'm guessing it doesn't take much power to transfer, OR it uses the USB for power after boot.

There's two different chipsets for the G3 and the U2
check this (http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1218)

U2 has their NAND flashes side by side. G3 has one on the top, and one in the middle.

4. You DO NOT need to have a battery in the player to use it has a flash drive or to transfer music files for that matter.

Erasure4ever: have you noticed any problems with settings w/o the battery? If I use it w/o the battery, it forgets some files transferred to it, and changes settings back to defaults. :-/

Well I don't use it as a UMS very often without the battery so I can't say. I just know that you CAN use it without the battery since the user manual doesn't say anything about requiring a battery.

I haven't done so much, either, but had to try, just because... :)
