Hi,

I'm getting a bizarre problem with the music on my wife's D2. The music library seems to have an issue with the Genre list. On seemingly random albums or tracks set as "Rock" (ID3/2.3) show up under a numbered genre on the D2 - eg "(17)" instead of "Rock". Yet the remaining albums and tracks appear under the correct genre.

Our music library is maintained and organised with iTunes, and I have double checked the ID3 tags using other software, but I cannot see why certain songs get assigned to these odd numbered genres on the D2, whilst others with identical genre tags work correctly.

Has anyone else had this trouble? This is firmware 2.45b, and I have tried it from a completely fresh install (formatted, firmware re-install etc).

FWI, this problem was discussed in another thread. Unfortunately, I can't remember where, but I do believe it was resolved. I think you might find it by searching either "(17)Rock" or "(19)Rock" (perhaps with a space), but I'm not 100% certain that I am remembering that correctly.

Rename the genre again and save it, You might have to change it to something else, and save and then change it back again. That usually fixes it for me.

In the tag info the genre is saved as a number. Then in media programs and players they take that number, look in a list and then view the genre that is equal to the number. And sometimes programs like winamp have their own genre list, and mayby thats why the D2 display the number to.

Scroll down to A.3 to see the genre list

Here is the other thread in which this discussion about genre tags comes up, but it's not dealt with very well:

I don't think I'm getting proper genre tags on the D2 simply by re-tagging them (I use MediaMonkey) - they still come up with the number codes when I search the D2 by genre. Am I missing anything?

In the tag info the genre is saved as a number.

That's true for MP3, but .OGG (and .WMA?) is much saner about it all. I have tracks tagged with genres like 'New age ambient rock' and my Rockboxed M5 displays them just dandy.

Next big leap is getting multiple genres, and artists, on a single track supported.

That genre number as I have understood it comes from ID3 tag version 1. Mp3 files nowdays can contain both version 1 and version 2.x tags at the same time.
If you use a ID3tag tool and make sure that you only have version 2.3 tags and remove the version 1 tags you should be OK.
(There is a newer version out aswell (2.4). But it is rather new and its wise to wait with that version until all the players have catched up to that version. Or at least wait until your D2 supports it properly.)
But laborate on a couple of files first before you do it on all of your files so you get the hang of it first. I use ID3-tagit http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Audio/Other-AUDIO-Tools/ID3-TagIT.shtml
But I know that some others here recomend another editor which I canīt remember the name of.

However ID3-tagit works for me. Just remember when you do changes on alot of files at the same time with ID3-tagit the GUI can stop to respond until its done, just leave it alone until it is done and then the GUI starts to respond again.

Here is another list with the ID3tag fields and its use in different versions of ID3tag http://www.sno.phy.queensu.ca/~phil/exiftool/TagNames/ID3.html
