I swear to whatever you pray that I have been more gentle with my D2 than any other piece of tech I own or have owned. My very first mp3 player was a CW300 and at the time it was absolutely perfect in my eyes, all other players be damned. But one fateful day 7 months after I purchased it, my puppy found it an managed to turn it into a very expensive chew toy.
Needless to say I thought what a lovely hat she would make after I skinned her. The mourning period passed and, disillusioned, I filled the void with a 2 year old second-hand ipod mini. It served its purpose faithfully for a year, until the battery started to give and I figured it was time to start looking for a Real player.
I spent months researching players for the perfect blend of cost, specs, and the spoo-in-your-pants cool factor. My search ended with the arrival of the D2. It is not the perfect player, but it was as close as I was going to get for the next year or so.
I don't even treat my gf with the care and consideration I give to my little D2. It is never placed in any danger, (stupid dog) and the second I stop using it, it is wrapped in a lens cleaning cloth and placed oh so gently in an altoids case. Whenever it is out of my line of vision I can tell you exactly to the cm where it is.
Tonight, however, tragedy struck. In a fleeting moment of klutziness, I knocked my precious out of my hand. In that short three foot fall, my nerdy life flashed before my eyes.
When I examined the accident scene I noticed that I had tripped a couple of the snaps holding the front bezel in place. Holding my heartbeat I snapped the front back into place and prayed to the valley of silicon that D2 was safe. I experienced a minor stroke when I tried the power button and found it did not work, in fact the friction to it was all wrong. It slid too easily in the on position and wouldn't click to the hold position. I had dislodged the switch from the inner mechanism.
I spent several tense minutes carefully reversing my folly, silently cursing my parents for not finding more suitable genetic partners.
Thankfully I was able to return the button to its proper position and my D2 is once again in working order with only a few minor scars.

I humble myself before you, and beg that you don't judge me too harshly. [blush]

[laugh] Amusing story. Good to read that your D2 came out with minor damage and is still fully functional. Think about investing in a better case? Maybe a silicon based one would be good to try to prevent another accident [thumbsup]

Haha! Great story as it has a happy ending. Being a D2 owner, I held my breath reading the post, hoping that sort of drama won't happen to me. Thanks for sharing!

For what it's worth, I'm the opposite - I treat my D2 like my cellphone. Just toss it in my pocket and walk around without a care. I have a leash attached to the hole where the stylus goes, and for the most part, I pull the leash to get the player out of my pocket, and I swing the player in the air and catch it in my hand. When I'm working out, I'm slapping the screen with my sweaty fingers to change videos, and I often tap the screen with my knuckle to bring up the clock. I store the D2 in a soft zippered headphone case. It's rarely in there, though, as I'm almost always using the player. Also, whenever I'm holding the D2, I have a death-grip on the leash [smile]

I highly recommend getting some sort of leash. I have the Cowon necklace (it came with one of my older players, and is available on Jetmall's site) but any sort of lanyard/cord will do, as long as you can feed it through the slot on the side of the player.

FYI, My D2 has the metal stickers and the Shieldzone full body shield. They offer scratch protection, but won't save the D2 from a drop on a hard floor. Hence my patented LDG aka Leash Death Grip (TM). [smile]

Since I'm carefree with my electronic devices, I have a Verizon Casio G'zOne phone, which is the equivalent of a Casio G-Shock watch - you can drop the phone in water, use it in the shower, a heavy rainfall, etc... and it can withstand drops on hard floors. Now if Casio teamed up with Cowon for the D3....

Just pimping the leash, as I find it's saved my D2 from many a tragedy!

Johnny, I hope your D2 never falls again, and congrats on your emergency room procedures to save it!

My D2 also took a fall once, luckily only abut 2 feet and onto the carpet. After what happened to my cellphone last summer, I praise screen protectors for all its worth: i was at work, early in the morning, working in the outside area of a museum. there were some stray sheeps, so me and my colleague drove our mini tractor to where the sheeps were and i parked it to go chase them away. i put the keys in my pocket, with my brand new SE k750 cell, and ran to chase sheeps.... 5 min later, the screen had a MAJOR scratch. Thats the last time i ever put anything sharp in my pocket with anything that has a screen. ^^
Now the cell has gotten a brand new golden casing and screen protector, and the D2 has both screen protector and i have it in a camera case.

Captain, you're the man when it comes to daredevil stunts with your D2! [biggrin]

When I check out the pictures and videos of your awesome custom cases and mounts for the D2, I figure if anyone will damage their player, it's you. So as long as your D2 is in nice working order, that makes me breathe easy that I can be so easy-going with my own device. The day you say "I was working on a new jukebox display, and I accidentally scratched my D2 placing it in the mount" then I'll treat my D2 more gingerly [smile]

Just gotta love the R2-D2 and the jukebox!

Blah, I had my D2 only for a few days and I was listening to it in the car. When I finally got home and parked the car in the garage, I picked up my bag which was right next to the D2 and lifted that out of the car first. Apparently the wires in the headphone jack got tangled onto the bag somehow and after pulling my bag, my D2 came hurtling out of the car, landing on the dirty garage floor. I carefully picked up my D2 almost about to cry, then I tried the power button. To my joy, it came on in my first try, I was so relieved. Luckily the screen took no damage but the stock screen protector it comes with did get beaten up a little bit. Also several of the corners of the D2 are slightly damaged as well. The smooth shiny back of the D2 has also been scuffed a bit. Later that night I ordered the full body shield from shield zone. I still need a leather case though.

LOL
Well I have a screen protector ^^
Nevertheless, one of the reasons i didn't fully complete the R2D2 was that it strained the jack too much, but I havent had any DIY-related incidents with it (yet), though i wish i had a plastic model to test size issues with instead of using the real thing, it has no place in my hobby room :S too many destructive tools

Sadly this issue brings up one of the two things I actually miss about my ipod experience. The non-related one was the playlist versatility, particularly the smart list (e.g. four/five star songs only). What I miss the most though is that ipod is so popular that there are practically limitless accessories, especially cases. My speck toughskin turned my powder blue mini into a bada*$ lookin player and saved its life so many times. That mini saw more falls than I dare say.
I have also been trying to come up with a diy metal box to take the place of my altoid tin which would allow room for my headphones and greater protection (i would love to just toss it in my back pocket and not worry about squishing it).

It took a lickin' and kept on tickin'! And it must be minty fresh, too! [laugh]
