IMHO:

It would be nice, but since there is no know Recovery Mode for the D2, Rockbox most likely will not try anything with the D2.

Of course there maybe a Recover Mode and Cowon is keeping it secret. I wrote and asked them about a Recovery Mode and the reply was there is No Recovery Mode for the D2.

Hard and expensive to reverse engineer firmware if there is no Recovery Mode.

You just end up with a bunch of "Bricked" D2's, if you can not reinstall the old firmware.
