I see that the new Sony - the nw-hd5 will be out in May and a limited number of 30gb available. The great thing about this model is that the battery can be replaced. Its an ordinary rechargeable Lithium ion battery. A great stroke.
What I have read about the m5 had me interested, then read about delays for the 30gb M5L, then there'll be loads of omissions, like no cradle etc - so I am going off it at the rate of knots. The Sony sounds a good replacement for my lustings !

Sadly, only german which is a pig - getting babel fish to translate was a joke....:)

Well spotted sir ! No prices though. I gather it will be very much cheaper than the grossly overpriced glimpses thus far of the M3L....

Remember you have to use SonicStage for any Sony product, and while they have improved it significantly, it is no where near as intuitive as drag and drop.

You can drag and drop with the Vaio music transfer program. I use it to drag and drop mp3's to my HD3. Straight from MY MUSIC to TARGET DEVICE. Of course the MP3's still get wrapped in their pointless little DRM blanket though.

Yeah I have a NW-hd3 as well. While the Vaio Transport utility is a good alternative to SS you still need SS to delete files and such things. There are some other inherent problems with the device and software as well which may or may not be remedied with this player.

Still it is extremely small and has semi-good battery life.

Keep in mind that the batttery was probably tested with very low quality ATRAC files.

HD5 looks extremely lame, however, I very much dig the REMOVEABLE battery. COWON needs to SERIOUSLY consider a REMOVEABLE battery in their future HDD products especially the A2!!!

Phil K

Well, while I concede it isnt the best looking thing imagineable, I certainly don't think its "lame" but beauty is in the eye of the beholder of course.
Sonic stage is indeed appalling and that Sony continued to use such utter s*** as their software doesnt say much for Sony's management. Of course their obsession with copyright protection is the problem, but if they are so obsessed why build the hardware to copy, then try to stop it copying ?????
Still - the fact remains that I believe Cowon/iAudio are going to shoot themselves in the foot overpricing the M5 as they seem to be doing, while trying to remove as many of the pluses like remote and cradle as they seem to be. I know I have been put off personally. I refuse point blank to pay a ridiculous near £300 for the M5 without a remote or cradle. God knows what they will try to charge for the 30gb M5L (why the added delay for this ?) Nope, overpriced and NOT over here - thats the problem.

Where do you get the UK pricing info from Phil K?

And IMHO it is sensible of them to remove the remote seeing that many people might not need it and it would just drive the cost of the unit higher if it was included in the base package. The no cradle is exactly the same as with the M3. The M3 also has no cradle in the base package.

300 dollars for the X5 20GB sounds very reasonable from suntec. I know that the UK gets really shafted on electronics, I feel sorry for you guys. How involved are cowon with regional pricing? I thought the regional price increases were from taxes and distributers, not the manufacturer.

I like the fact about the Sony player that its only 125g light, and that wit ha 20gb hdd! Its almost as light as a iPod Mini!

imho i seem to like the hd5's looks. it looks kinda querky with the layout of the buttons an stuff. its nice to see that the same trend aint being kept, unlike the ipods, and creative micros, and the next 20gb version of the micro shape. oh yea and not forgetting the iriver h10 family.

dunno the look of the hd5 appeals to me, however the use of sonicstage, not being able to transfer from more than one terminal (i think thats the case), just little limitations which turns me away.

i would personally like all dap's to atleast come with a remote, but thats just me, however i can still live with buying a remote seperatly. dont think i could use a dap on a daily basis without a remote.

just a thought, why dont cowon do an iriver, having a "lite" version of their daps, or maby like how the base package doesnt include a cradel, another package could be made which contrains both cradle and remote, just a thought.

why would sony only make a limited edition of 30gb's? surely if they had 30gb's running without a limit supply, they would sell loadss, but then would depend on how much it costs. ah well.

They probably did some market research and don't think that 30 GB versions would do as well. Not everyone has the same needs as you.
Also, by having a full package for the X5 cowon risks not selling them all, if someone wants the cradle and remote they can buy it seperately, but if they don't want it they wont buy the combo package. By offering a package they run the risk of overstock.

nw-hd1 is the greatest looking hdd player around!

btw it seems like the hd5 doesnt need an adaptor for usb.. but the design is just too common.

They say 40 hours using ATRAC (like you would do that....) and 30 hours for MP3

The removeable battery, size and weight are the 3 things that mean I HAVE TO HAVE ONE!

Exity - just from the German pricing in euros, euros to pounds and a (I admit) adding for a possible cradle - not including a remote, which I have heard from some IS included, from others it ISNT. Also, the same with availablity of the 30gb long play - some say at same time it is announced others a couple of months later - pays yr money, takes yer choice, but looking at the worst case scenario is rarely proved wromg ! :D
Maybe I am off on this - I sincerely hope I am. But when I saw a price of 419 euros on that german site for the 30gb, my jaw dropped in horror and all of a sudden my fancies turned to the Sony ! But as for no inclusion of cradle and remote along with the ludicrous price being about right - do you get one free, mate ? :D

You're quite correct - no.

is it plausible that there's also coming an nw-hd-5 with colourscreen and usb-otg/ an improved vaio pocket?

Actually, atrac plus is fine - just it takes a ridiculous amount of time to convert and not certain of doing it in the first place (I had a cd walkman that did atrac3 plus and you could select a full cd's worth and then go out for an hour, come back and it STILL wouldnt be finished - also it may have problems with ONE track and pull the plug on everything it had done to that point) but the big [problems with Sony is their obsession with copyright protection. It is what has cost Sony a lot of sales I think. What use a copying thing if its made to NOT copy ?

just wait till end of the year and sony will release a new player.. hd7 or whatever. usb otg is not very possible since drm blabla. imo this feature is a bit overrated tho..

yeah, found an new sonyplayer at www.shopping.com. the sony hmp-a1 will probably be the new vaio pocket. there will also probably be a new iriver h330/300 with 30 gig. and a bit different looks. but that will probably be discussed in another forum or another site.
I will probably get the x5l 30 gig, wonder what the first reviews will say about the thickness of this beast.
thanks anyway

Just hope it is not larger than the iRiver H300/30. My friende has one it and is huge but cool, square but sexy, ugly but sensual.

this player is really tiny (read the specs!)..no competition with iriver!! sizewise its more in the 5gb players league. if it works with vaio music transfer and there is no eu volume restriction (or at least a crack to solve it) then it will be awesome (no need for any kind of adaptors to use it!). the lip-4wm battery still is more on the expensive site (49$ at audio-cubes)

btw looks good in black

X5 still looks better and I'm sure 99% of non iPod DAP heads will agree.

well further reviews will tell. imo battery life cant be enough in those hdd driven daps ..therefore sony!

does anyone know how much of the sony nw-hd5h(30 gb.) are going to make?and when it's going to be released in the U.S.?
I'm still searching for some nice reviews, if I find some, I will post the link offcourse.

04-25-2005, 16:31
ow, forgot to ask: will there be a remote for this player?
Is the nw-hd5h(30 gb.) the same size as the nw-hd5(20gb.)?
I thought I read that somewhere, that would be really nice.

JoeY2k
04-25-2005, 16:40
the nw-hd5h (30gb version) will be a bit larger than the normal nw-hd5.
judging from the existing pictures the player can be used with those new remotes.

Gameboys are nowhere near that ugly.
Looks like a cheap pirate knowckoff gameboy.
