View Full Version : Battery Pack.. ?
Hi =)
I know 52(..) hours is pretty much and I love it. But:
I'm going on several trips this summer / fall and won't have the chance to charge it.. (backpack-travelling / bike tours)
So I was wondering whether anyone out there has thought about a battery pack?
We, as a team, could realize this, right?
Would be great =)
Looking forward to your replies
Jendrik
all you'd need for travalling is something like this: http://www.makezine.com/blog/archive/2006/08/how_to_build_a_4_x_aa_usb_batt.html
it would allow you to charge your D2 without needing the mains....
if you don't wanna make one there's this http://www.cdw.com/shop/products/default.aspx?edc=846054
Hmm, thanks =)
Should've thought about a usb thing.. just thought about the other port of the D2.. but what for? You're right.
Thanks.. I think I will try to build one myself.. for the fun of it, will keep you posted.
please do, i'd like to see a build in progress by a 'real' person, i.e. not someone who's built these 100 times over :D

I was thinking of getting one of these for future backpacking advdentures: www.solio.com (http://www.solio.com). Lot of adapters (extra option) as well as generic USB-adapter. Can be charged by a wall socket if you have one around, as well (ie, traveling in most civilized areas :P)
But a AA/AAA batterypack would help as great deal as well as there is no "double" charge time involved (although I could theoretically use the Solio even if I were in the middle of the Himalayas) - I'd bring both of them, I guess. :P
Oh, by the way, I've seen in some product descriptions of batterypack in regards to the iPod that it will only be able to *run directly* off it and not charge the internal battery. Does anyone know if that is true (both in regards to the D2 and the iPod, as I have both - mostly interested in the D2, though, as that is my main workhorse)?
I think the solar chargers are a really good idea, but grossly overpriced.
Regarding you "run directly" query, this can be true, some dap/battery packs combos will only power the unit and not charge it, but it all depends and I highly doubt that would be the case with the D2.
they are way too expensive..
however.. i built a little "charger" utilizing a 9V battery.. works well.
BUT: My D2 tells me the battery is full when i plug it in :x
Any idea?
ps: pictures will follow ;)

THe D2 will charge on the USB, but won't run of it. You can only charge & use with the AC adapter.

Yeah, the Solio sure expensive but if I were to travel in places where wall sockets was absent I think I'd get one since it would also be my emergency charger for other things such as mobile (uh...make that satellite phone as I doubt my regular mobile would work) and such. Though, purely as a D2-charger it'd be an overkill purchase, yes. :)
Glad to hear the needles pointing towards "highly probable" in regards to D2 actually charging from the battery pack, though.

Both your linked external battery packs look good, the latter looking fantastic and the one I may consider myself.

Btw, what do you think of the pics? Made a lightbox for taking these shots yesterday, out of a cardboard box, some paper and 24 white LEDs
