Hi there,
I went on product.cowon.com web site and the Q5 is annonced.
It's going to be out in 15 days.

And Damned, the WIFI is not inside the machine, we'll need a USB wifi key...
It's a shame.

Battey time : audio :14 Hours, video 7 hours.

And something I didn't understand is that we may need to buy the "plus" version of WINCE pro to be able to use the office viewer.

But the device look very nice.

have a good day.

Thanks for info, but can you expand what this means, like do we need a usb wifi stick or...........[confused]

edit looking at the pics yeah looks like we will have to carry a usb wifi stick around and with this, battery life, and no removable battery id be hard to convince to buy this now.

wow, great news the Q5 is finally making its way.

It's a pity the wifi is not internal. hopefully the US/European model will me slightly changed to adopt for this. The Archos have wifi built-in so it should be possible.

want one!!!

Is that May 15th Global or just Korea? By the looks of the site there are two packages you can get, one comes with more added extras than the other.

Hmmm... some disappointments.

Looks like the navigation software "Mappy" is only available for Korea. (http://www.mappy.co.kr/) Also, does it require that ugly windshield mount to work?

Also, the WiFi not being embedded is a big disappointment. Aren't there chips nowadays for WiFi that extremely small? I'm sure they could've found room inside the device.

It seems that if the device doesn't come with GPS or DMB in the US and there's no embedded WiFi, it should be less expensive. $500 is a lot. At least it comes with all the cables (tv/out-in?) and a remote.

edit: oh and look, maybe it comes with a case. See picture 15 here: http://product.cowon.com/product/product_Q5_photo.php
and see the headphones in picture 11. Noise cancellation? or...

Yeah, I'd really like to know what the differences are.. the translation I get back from babelfish and google language tools is pretty much, "Inside is empty [syen] the package".

From what I've seen elsewhere, "empty syen" seems to be used in conjunction with GPS. So maybe the GPS is the extra feature on the higher-end version.

I am also disappointed that the Wifi is not built in..

Well good news it will finally be realeased to bad about the wifi though having a usb stick in just does not seem to be very practical.

I guess you can get something like the link below instead of that large usb wifi adapter. Who knows how range is though...

If us Cowon freaks dont like the doggle imagine what the reviewers are going to say, this is such a bad backwards move. Ive used the Raon Vega umpc and have misplaced the wifi doggle for this so many times. Oh well there is always Archos.........

wifi implementation sucks [thumbdwn]

lets hope in US version its replacing the DMB

:-(

I see the GPS is SiRF III CHIP - hmm nice - I feel thats an external module as well :(

see http://product.cowon.com/product/product_Q5_nameof.php

I think the GPS is part of the cradle - the HUMP part of the cradle on the back..

see here :
http://product.cowon.com/product/product_Q5_feature.php

<SIGH>

maybe the A3 will be better..

omjeremy
04-30-2007, 17:14
It also looks like GPS will be Korea only... see the button for DMB on the cradle.

Also, I looked up Windows CE 5.0 Pro Plus... It is an addition and, get this, it only enables viewing of office files. Yet, I still couldn't find a place to purchase it.

C'mon Cowon...

It's strange, this (http://product.cowon.com/product/product_Q5_nameof.php) page states in the specs "wi-fi" and yet there's no wi-fi usb key in the package list. Of course we all know the offending picture. My theory: They decided to show off USB hosting with whatever was on their desk.

We desperately need a korean translator.

Edit: I just saw this (http://product.cowon.com/product/product_Q5_feature.php) page and all hope is lost.

Looking forward to some reviews about its capabilities and fuctionality as well as SQ, not long to wait :)

well, I guess the lack of onboard wifi is not a deal breaker..but only if the base unit is competetively priced. I wonder if the A3 news will be released soon.

I want a PMP to back up my Digital Cam photos/video, and playback avi, divX Xvid etc mainly

Hi,

I am a fluent Korean/Englishspeaker as some of you may know...

I will clarify/confirm a few things:

1. WiFi is external and Cowon will be selling a seperate USB WiFi Stick for the Q5. This is a compensation for the ultra thin chasis and the very long battery life (come on, which is more important? you have to stop complaing and understand cowon's position.)

2. GPS is external and a different map software is planned for America (other countries not announced). Obviously, this is another compensation as point 1 + only car drivers really use it anyway.

3. Q5 will come out in June 2007 in america/international with a price tag of 499Usd for 40Gb and 549Usd for 60Gb. This release date is for korea only.

4. HSDPA will be availabe externally via USB.

5. The headphone picture is not a noise cancelling headphone but part of the headset with a buil-in mic for use in msn audio chat.(must be bought seperately)

6. You need to buy Windows CE Professional Plus from Cowon to enable office viewer.

Overall, Raon's VEGA Ultra Portable PC is much better and it was indeed worth buying it - waiting was pointless as Vega has full Windows XP for unlimited possibilities.

Thanks for your translation Jennifer.
I'll have to wait for the price point to see if I might agree with your conclusion.
So far I don't.

This is a complete dissappointment, was very excited to get a Q5 but now, i hear all this I won't be buying one, it's not going to be worth it if I'm going to be having to buy all optional extras, including the OS to even run applications, ridiculous and very dissappointed in Cowon. Lets hope the A3 will live up to the hype.

i guess i would have liked this much better if it ran like a PMP and not some PPC. i don't like the windows GUI at all! the external WiFi and extra cost for maps don't bother me. i would buy the product if it was a little cheaper(which it will be in the future).
on the other hand having a hot (literally) gadget that eats all the battery is not my idea of portable multimedia.

sorry about all this emphasis about the vega, but I am completely taken over by it...it is at least 10x better than the q5.

If you want outlook, (i can really only emphasizethis), there is cufrently nothing better than the vega which runs full Outlook 2007 at a very reasonable speeds.

Something I love about is the ability to play all emulator games...N64, Gameboy Advance, Playstation, SNES, MAME....the list is endless.

And I still cant believe I am running Need for Speed Hot Pursuit and Fifa 2000 on my Vega.
The 3D graphics just looks awesome with high frame rates thanks to AMD's 3Dnow! technology and Intel's MMX technology. PSP users are jealous of the vega...

And I really doubt whether you can do any of that on the q5..(running firefox on the q5 would be a miracle in this community while vega users are running firefox 3 by a simple download & automatic install....)

This external Wi-Fi excuse is BS. The PSP and DSLite both have built-in Wi-Fi, it doesn't use a lot of space on the PCB. What the hell is so special about a PMP that requires so much board space??? There is MORE circuitry inside of a PSP than this PMP. Sure the PSP doesn't have a HDD but it has a UMD drive. The battery life excuse is BS too. Why not allow you to turn on/off the Wi-Fi functionality when you use/not use it for power consumption? This is a HUGE disappointment.

Man... why does this kid always come here and say things like that. VEGA is a COMPUTER and Q5 is a MEDIA PLAYER. You have doubt about that Q5 huh?
I doubt how fast does your VEGA can rip a dvd movie, how well could it run PS2 and GC emulator.
Could it play COD3, DOOM3 with high setings?
you know that a UPPC is not cmparable to a laptop/destop. I hope you know that a MEDIA PLAYER cannot be compared with a UPPC in your ways, either.

Just a bit of news, maybe. I live in Korea, and I've been checking the online shopping sites for news of the Q5. Well, it's been listed for quite some time, but they don't give a price meaning you can't buy it. However, they've updated some of the information about it. It's now showing 2 flavors, a 40gig model and a 60 gig model.

Geeze only 13 hours of audio per charge? I guess that's the spinning hard drive to blame. I assume it would be significantly less than 13 hours with the screen on as well.

Couldn't they have made this an all flash memory player for roughly the same price? Like if it had the equivalent of 4 8GB SDHC cards internally? 13 hours is not terrible by any means, but I'm going to wait for the all flash memory driven Cowon Q6 that I just made up in my mind.

Well... that would be good news. I wonder how long it'll take to be available in the U.S.? Also on the 15th?

I've been going nuts needing a reliable 60GB+ media player... and I just may become certifiable and buy this (if available) rather than wait on the A3.

A bit off subject but I owned an Archos 504 for a week. Beautiful screen & plays everything I had but junk quality. The unit would intermittently freeze from static, then lock or have the screen go black and be unresponsive. Happened 3+ times a day under heavy use. Can't be good for components. Archos C/Svc = useless. Common issue. Well documented. No solution. Sent mine back for a full refund. Also signal to noise ratio horrible. I never would have believed their quality control was that bad considering how nice they look. Creative is not an option... or not a good one.

Just don't know if I can hold out until 60gb A3 arrives. I really need the space.

I'm interested to know if the Q5 will have hardware driven EQ and Jeteffects (in FW like the D2) or if they will be software driven (like Jetaudio) or possibly a combo of both and what type of outputs the Q5 has line-out, bluetooth, A/V ect (mainly for the US/EU release) but the korean release i suposse will answer a few Q's :)

It looks like those prices are higher than the US versions. They're selling A2 30gb for 330,330 won = 356 dollars. It's about 50 dollars over what they're selling for in the US. Probably the Q5 will be less than it is over there once it hits our shores.

Questions I can't find answers for:

While I am mostly interested in the A3 the fact that the 60GB unit is coming to the market late is making me seriously consider the Q5.

What aspects of PMP does the Q5 not do that A3 can do? Recording? Codec support? etc.?

Is it possible to extend battery life of the Q5 by shutting off wi-fi or is it always on?

What db sound level is the Q5 audio output set for? (is it as loud as Creative W or as quiet as Archos 04?)

When can I expect English reviews?

Kodai
05-15-2007, 08:44
From what i have seen in these forums, the A3 will be able run MKV and OGM video files. I have also seen nothing about the Q5 being able to record video.

It appears that the wi-fi capability of the Q5 will be in a seperate module, so yes, it can be shut off.

Cnet has had their first look review up for a long time.
For indepth reviews, you'll need to wait at least a month or 2.

Signal to noise ratio is supposed to be 95db.

You should also look at the video that was posted recently.

Hi there,
I went on product.cowon.com web site and the Q5 is annonced.

CLié.[biggrin]

Actually wifi will be built in for the US version eliminating the dmb feature.

When can I expect English reviews?
who do you think these guys (forum members) are? cowon employees?
we know almost nothing about this device, other than what is posted on the official cowon site and these forums.

now, to answer your questions:
1. u will find out when the Q5 and A3 come out in the US
2. You can test it yourself when the Q5 comes out in the US
3. You can test how loud the Q5 is when is comes out in the US
4. You can expect english reviews when the Q5 comes out in the US

Get it?

Yes. Very helpful. Now I know when you post you know nothing I need to know about the Q5 or A3. Thanks.

all this news makes me think about it,

so for me it's really expensive, the battery is 1/3 of what i have now (sort of )
(IAudio X5L), WiFi isn't built in but i don't give a damn about it. I'm thinking about waiting until the A3 comes and i hope it's worth waiting for. but if i do get the money i'm surely buying a q5 because it's nicest PMP i've seen

P.S. For everybody loving vega: if you want to spend money on a uppc buy an OQO model O2 check this: http://www.oqo.com/products/model02/specifications.html

So is there any news from South Korea? Is it already possible to buy the Q5 over there? I haven't heard anything about it yet...

Uh... how about:
http://shop.cowon.com/products/ishop_product_detail.php3?CateCode=20/98&ProCode=1178860234

Seems like you can order it online anyhow. There's a 60GB model link on their store as well.

It should be out in the wild by now, but I haven't seen any reviews or even comments on it yet. I'm anxious to see what people think of the Q5.
I'm actually considering importing one rather than wait till September, as I plan do do a lot of flying this summer, and my A2 just ain't cutting it.

Actually for flying -I do a lot of that, mostly long flights- the A2 is probably better than the Q5 as it has better battery life.

I'm tight sometimes on the 9 or 10 hours I get for video on the A2, so one of my big questions, since flying is the main reason for having the A2, is whether I want a Q5 or not.

truly weird there is no review around, even a korean one.
plus the other weird thing I read somewhere on the net is a "end of Q2" us release. would that mean end of june?
