This might have been asked before, but I can't seem to find it.

Personally I use 160kbps video and 64kbps audio. The videos usually have subtitles, too, but they seem to be fine on the D2. The file size ranges from 40 to around 60mb.

What encoder are you using? Both the video bitrate and audio bitrate seem very very low....what is your source video's bitrate and resolution?

Source is much higher. I'm using iRiverter. For some reason I find those bitrates very much suitable. No problems hearing or reading anything on the screen.

Ok Schalldämpfer, I've never even heard of anyone using that low of bitrate...
When I use a dvd a source I can't even stand to watch it at 512kbps...
But it's fine if it doesn't bother you...atleast your saving space...[laugh]

But I'm obsessed with video quality as much as I am with sound quality...if my source is dvd the video bitrate on the D2 usually ends up being anywhere from 768kbps to 1.6mbps.

For video I'm always at 1500 kbps or above because space is rarely an issue.

For audio I always use the original source audio without recompressing, whenever possible. The only time I have to recompress the audio is when the source is AC3 or OGG or something other than mp3.

VirtualDub is great for encoding in XVID or DIVX and keeping the original audio of your source movie. Synch always comes out perfectly, that is unless I pause the movie or skip around too much. But I often have that problem with JetAudio's converter as well.

I wish they would address audio/video sync in a firmware update.

Very surprised to hear that you guys are using bitrates as much as ten times as mine. I really can't find fault with 160kbps video. The audio at 64kbps is lacking, but I'm not too concerned about it when I'm staring at such a small screen.

I got my D2 4 days back. For D2, I reencode the divx files at 500 kbps video and 128 kbps audio and it looks quite awesome.I tried the setting of 160kps video and 64 kbps audio, but with this settings the audio seems fine but the video has lots of blocks and is not clear.

I am using WinMEnc with 2 pass & Very Hig quality option selected

I use at least 768kbps. 160 on my footage would look like a splodge of different colour.

i currently use 768kbps. its becasue i like the sound quality and as well as the video quality to be very high and excellent so that i can fully explore the full capibilities of my D2's. its a shame though if it only had the amoled screen if cowon are planning to make a 8GB model version of the next D2 it should have at least replaced the screen to the new amoled version it looks pretty sweet in different angles. would look awesome on the D2 [thumbsup]

Schalldämpfer, I encode 192kbps vid - 128 kbps audio and I am extremely happy with it.

Your 160kbps vid is OK for me, I have even used it once in a while. But your 64 kbps audio is below what I like. I used 64 only for some physics lectures for which quality was not that much important. But for general encoding I suggest you improve to 128.

I agree with you that sub 200 kbps video is very good on such a small screen. I don't understand how people notice the difference. Anything over 512 is overkill.

I tried 900 ,768 and 700 for video with divx 6.5.1 codec and xvid 1.2 @ 320x240 full screen and 192 for audio always the video is slow. How do u guys use 1500 K ?

edit: ı tried iverter, jetaudio with huge bitrate like 1.5 mbit and have no problem but why have i got performance problems with Virtual Dub? Doesn't D2 support divx 6.5.1 or xvid 1.2 because of features like qpel or something i do not know.

I'm using iRiverter and for bitrate I've selected 500 Kbps for video and 128 Kbps for audio, and I'm very happy with the resulting quality [yes]

I use AVI auto normal quality in JetAudio and I must recommend it, because a encoded file is smaller and nicer than that one with bitrate 512kbps...

just like Snorreh above, I also use iriverter 0.16

It's really easy to use, and makes dvd rips a piece of cake

originally i set my audio to 128kbps and then ramped up my bitrate to 768kbps or higher, since i read the D2 is happy all the way up to 2000kbps!!. However, i began to notice a loss of audio sync with those videos, so i dropped the bitrate back down to around the 500 mark and it's much better now.

When i say its fine, there is still a very slight sync issue --maybe 150ms or so-- but it takes a really well trained and critical examination to notice this.

I did some really precise tests with a video of a handgun firing, using all different bitrate settings. At the higher bitrates the sound was always ahead of the video, sometimes up to 1/2 second, but below 550kbps it's close enough that you don't notice a problem. I tried to use iriverter's audio sync tools (which let you +/-100ms) but that didn't seem to help at all, i noticed no difference

so my advice for iriverter 0.16 settings:

< 550kbps video bitrate
128kbps audio bitrate
leave the default audio sync settings (which is auto)
finally i recommend normalizing the sound levels

Unless you mean video I'm really confused as to why you'd want 768kbps 2 channel audio...
