Thought I'd share some pics of the stand I threw together for the D2 I just received last week. I was tired of the D2 falling over using only the stylus as a stand while I was synching with my desktop.
The tripod itself is a Merkury tabletop camera tripod I found in a Microcenter bargain bin for $0.99. The clip on top was fashioned out of a spare PCI-slot cover panel, wrapped in electrical tape and bent into shape with pliers. It screws onto the tripod by means of a single nut superglued to the bottom and wrapped in more tape.
The tripod stand is flexible but quite stable, and lofts the D2 a good 5 inches off the table - perfect for watching videos on a nightstand or alarm clock mode. It can be angled up and down by adjusting the tripod legs. It comes with a pocket clip that I'm going to try to mount a small external speaker onto in the future. When I eventually get a silicone case I'll have to readjust all the angles to accommodate the thicker profile.
Total cost: $0.99; total production time: 30 minutes; total weight: ~1/2 that of the D2.
The case I've been using is a Lowepro model, also acquired at Microcenter for about $6.50. It's soft fabric so I don't really worry about scratching the D2 case, and has two pockets perfect for storing SD cards and the stylus. The D2 goes in the large webbed pocket (I'd cut out the clear plastic from the D2 retail box as a free screen protector until my shieldzone arrived yesterday). You can't really make out much on the screen through the webbing, but I set it to hold mode and can manipulate the +/- keys through the side of the case when it's closed. Eventually I'm going to pick up another of these and cut out the webbing, maybe replace it with some plastic.
The only thing that I don't like about this case is the attachment loop on the back is held on with velcro, so it could be snatched easily were it on a belt or a backpack strap. I suppose that's because these cases are meant more for backpackers storing cameras than urban use. Still, it's a nice cheap case and holds plenty of D2 accessories. It can even hold the clip for my tripod, though the tripod itself is too big to be attached anywhere.
I'll update with any more mods as they become available. [biggrin]
