I received my D2 toady, and decided to upgrade to firmware 3.41. After installing the second file the player won't turn on, and isn't recongnized by windows. All i get is Found USB Device, and is asking me for a driver (I am running Windows XP), any Help is appreciated, thanks.

Have you tried charging it fully? Give it all you can with the ac/dc-charger and then see if it doesn't help. I had a problem with my D2 at some point where it wouldn't start and this is what the Danish distributor advised me to do before sending it in. And it worked. Hope it's any help!

thanks for the reply, the device was fully charged before it died as i only used it for 10 minutes, makes me sick to my stomach (waited 2 and a half weeks for shipping just to send it right back) i think there was a problem istalling the second firmware file, that's when it got stuck, it's possible it doesn't have any firmware installed right now that's why it's dead. If i could only get it to be recongnized by windows i could put the firmware back on, thanks anyways, going to get an RMA number.

I just tried it, lots of hope but no luck. When i plug in the Usb cable in WindowsXP, i get Found new Hardware wizard, it asks to install driver. Supposedly cowon has some kind of service driver which allows them to install the firmware in case somebody bricks their mp3 while screwing up the firmware upgrade....it just sucks they don't offer it to their consumers, as i could easily fix this, now i got to ship it across the continent and let them do this simple process. Anyways thanks for your input.

I agree with you.

The Found New Hardware Wizard appears because the Operating System for the D2 is no longer driving the chip in the D2 that the USB cable plugs into. This is most likely caused by a failure during the firmware upgrade.

Because of that failure you end up with a Bricked D2.

It seems that most of the other Cowon Players have to be in the recovery mode to install firmware updates.

I have not been able to find any instructions that tell you how to enter the Recovery Mode for the D2.

The Sansa e2xx has a recovery mode that lets you install firmware if you brick their player. When you enter the recovery mode (lock the player, hold record button, turn on player) you can see a hidden 16MB partition where the software is that controls the player.

I am sure the D2 has a hidden partition also, as none of the files you can see using explorer are large enough to be the operating system.. The largest file in the system folder is the logo.ilb.

I think we just need to figure out how to view that partition or get into the recovery mode. I would guess that it has to be a combination of using the reset, power button and one of the "- M +". Then connecting the D2 to the computer.

Then it should just be a matter of dropping the contents of folder zero into that hidden partition and restarting the player.

Here is the chat I had with Cowon Tech Support after posting this:

Technical Support Team:
There is no recovery mode for this player
Technical Support Team:
Is there an issue with your player?
Roger:
No. It was just a question in case I bricked mine applying a firmware update like others have.
Technical Support Team:
Updating firmware should not damage the player. If bricking happens it is more than likely because the user did not follow the installation instructions exactly as described
Roger:
Ok...Then the only way to get it fixed is to send it back for repair? How much does that cost?
Technical Support Team:
D2s are new products, unless damaged they are covered by the manufacturer defect warranty
Roger:
Ok.. Thank you for your help.
Technical Support Team:
You're welcome

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

i had that too.

D2 wanted a driver the whole time... it happaned becauseit was on when i sticked the Usb cable in order to put the second firmware file on it!

it also did not wanted to start

after few resets and "on" and "offs" i put it on then turned it of and than put the usb cable

Result: no more driver hardware wizards!!!!

YOU REALY NEED TO ENSHURE THE DEVICE IST OFF when usb connecting!

I should have read this thread before trying to upgrade the firmware of my D2... Like species, I wanted to upgrade to version 2.41. First file went fine, but after I had uploaded the second file, the D2 wouln't start up anymore. Maybe I haven't unmounted the D2 properly before turning it off.

Does anybody have an idea how long it usually takes until Cowon sends the fixed player back? Are there repair centers in Europe?

Isn't the 3.41 firmware only for DMB models? I recall seeing somewhere that the DMB firmware will only work for DMB models...so could that be the problem?...though at the same time one of the guys here said they got it bricked when they were trying to install the 2.41 firmware. I installed the firmware no problem at all. I always "safely remove" all hardware just in case you have a data overflow that'll mess up...well the data.

I guess version 3.41 was a typo, it should probably be 2.41. I guess I bricked my player because I didn't "safely remove" (forgot to umount the device after loading up the second file).

Species, good to hear that the customer service works quickly. Does anybody have experience from Europe?

...the D2 wouln't start up anymore. Maybe I haven't unmounted the D2 properly before turning it off.
A couple times when I've been messing with language settings, or popping different SD cards in and out of the player, I turn on the D2 and it's either got a garbage screen or the player won't turn on at all. Pressing the reset button doesn't fix it. What works when the player won't turn on is to hold the power switch in the 'off' position for about 10 seconds. Apparently the player is on but the screen isn't, and holding the switch to off actually turns the player off. Then hitting the switch again turns the player on and things are fine.

Maybe that would work when you're upgrading the firmware and the player seems to not want to turn on?

As for the garbage screen (in case anyone wanted to know) the problem is solved by popping an SD card into the player. Sometimes I test so many SD cards at work that I confuse the D2 and it's trying to find files that aren't there. Putting in a card causes the D2 to read the card, and that seems to refresh the player and make it work OK again [smile]
