I am rather tempted to upgrade my player to the current 2.41, however I want to ensure that I can downgrade it in the future if I have issues. My player was shipped to me with firmware 2.21, however I can not find this firmware on any official cowon site, ie. cowonamerica and cowonglobal. I would really only feel confident loading firmware from an official source in the off chance that it bricks my D2.

Was my player shipped to me with some ghost firmware that was never released? Is there any way to back my current firmware up on my PC somehow in case I wish to revert back to it in the future?

You can go back. I upgraded to 3.41 and them returned to 2.21. There is a link on here to the 2.21 firmware but the 2.20 is the same. They installed the 2.21 on new 4GB units I believe.

Nope, players in Europe has been shipped with 2.21.
And returning to 2.21 is easy. advancedmp3players.co.uk is hosting it. You can find the link in another thread here.

Yes, I am aware that advancedmp3players is apparently hosting firmware 2.21, but it just seems peculiar that Cowon wouldn't have it available on one of their official sites.

Mostly I fear bricking the player and then having Cowon tell me that I should not have installed an 'unofficial' firmware.

Fear not:) When I went back to 2.21 from 2.41 beta, I used the AMP3 link and it worked fine. Only thing was that the menu showed in Korean. So when installing it it would be a mighty good idea to remember where to change the language setting ;)
I do agree that it's strange that Cowon doesn't offer the 2.21 from their site...

i didn't have any trouble either 2.21 to 2.41b

then went back to 2.21 using the file from Amp3
