I'm using ubuntu 6.10 and amarok (very new to both) and was reading that amarok should easily recognize my X5 20Gb. Well Ubuntu does and mounts it automatically, however amarok doesn't seem to see it at all. Is there something additional I need to do to get amarok to recognize the player?

Are you sure that you have configured support for the VFAT filesystem in your kernel? If you haven't, the drive will mount, but the operating system will be unable to read the files on the drive.

I'm not an Ubuntu or Debian user, so I don't know the exact procedure for these distributions. I use Gentoo, and the installation procedure is entirely different.

Using amarok 1.4.5 (not sure what Ubuntu is shipping), go to Settings->Configure Amarok, choose the Media Devices tab. Click "Add Device", choose "Generic audio player" and enter the appropriate name and mount point. After that amarok should detect it whenever you plug it in.
