I'm surprised no one mentioned this yet.

video looks like its done for a high school project.

"sd expansion slot allows for up to 2GB more or whatever the largest capacity is"? wtmf?!?!?!? cnet needs to fire this "reviewer".

cNet is overall a pretty worthless site. I use it for looking at new products because they have a decent database, but once I find something, I immediately look elsewhere.

This is barely even a review. Honestly, they hadn't even tested the battery yet. Pathetic.

the power of the d2 can be summed up as thus:

ridiculous battery life
superb audio quality / codec support
expandable SDHC memory (1, 2, 4, 8+)
touchscreen
montage of other features (pic, txt, vid)

whats this about the player being 'weighty'. i doubt it is that heavy as to call it weighty.

yes the competition has 8gb versions for around the same price or less, but uhh, do they have expandable memory? or anywhere near the battery life? [honestly, i dont know. do they?]

I feel the only use of CNET is yeah, they have one the biggest collection of reviewed gadgets which means more people are able to review a product once CNET has. Because CNET has this feature, it gives you a more accurate perspective of the reviewed product as others usually spend more time with the product before making an opinion and thus point out all the highs and lows rather than just gloss over the finer details.

The Cowon D2 offers a sleek and compact design dominated by a lovely, touch-sensitive screen.

a solid and compact player dominated by a 2.5-inch screen

The D2 is dominated by a 2.5-inch color screen, which makes it look

The reviewer must love being dominated in bed.[laugh]

Yeeze
03-03-2007, 23:27
That was one of the most crappy videos I've ever seen on cnet...
It was DOMINATED by the same pictures over and over, and it was DOMINATED by the same words over and over, and it was totally boring...
It is very inaccurate, and reminds me kind of on the video clix vs D2 made by cnet, where was no battery life mentioned, not even the 16Million color screen, I think cnet somehow don't likes the D2....
One quote: "it makes blind control almost impossible" is completely BS there are the customizable buttons, they work soooo perfect... damnit...
And another one: "expandable memory up to 2GB" OMG What The FRACK ;)
I will probably do my own D2 short video review where I will do a video matching the D2's specs, instead of just saying some random stuff...

Trust me, that won't be it. Most people have just gotten behind something that does the job just fine for most people, but definitely not us (people who frequent this forum and who have purchased a Cowon product of some kind). That's why us guys on this forum hate the darn thing because we want a device that has certain things that the iPod can't offer (long battery life, open file formats, etc). This is why people still praise it, well, IMO anyway.

I wouldnīt say so, Ipodīs are a big deal for a huge amount of people out there and this folks would get very pissed if someone tells them that they arenīt that great as they think they are. So in conclusion the media just gives them what they want, you canīt really blame cnet for that.

Probably because they use the damned things instead of slobbering over specs. The D2 has plenty of rough edges.

Usually cnet Asia and cnet have similar ratings, but in this case cnet Asia gave the D2 an 8.4 (http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/musicplay/0,39050463,39312461p,00.htm), while cnet gave it an 8.0 (http://reviews.cnet.com/Cowon_D2_4GB_black/4505-6490_7-32309446.html?tag=prod.txt.1)

I don't actually like that reviewer, but nevertheless I'd say they have a far better shot at a fair review than 99.9% of you guys.

Hmm... I think they are focusing on the wrong things...
When they give the nano 8.4 or whatever than they maybe looked at the good things of the nano, and didn't mention all that stuff thats not that good, I cannot call that fair, or am I misunderstanding you??

So what makes a Nano better than a D2 overall?

I was told that the "smart key" or the "hot key" can be customized to any function you want to but is there any other way to blind control without using the touch screen?

iPods are overrated. It pisses me off how they always get so much praise. My brother has an iPod, and the thing runs out of battery fast, and extra accesories are overpriced (iPods are overpriced, too)

goatherder
03-04-2007, 15:53
So what makes a Nano better than a D2 overall?

There's no generalized overall - the two are quite different in what they offer. The nano is absolutely tiny in comparison, it has better music access functions if considered as a system of hardware and software, and a host of accessories to extend functionality to fit in to whatever you're doing. If those things are more important to you than fiddling over technical features, (many of which may not work as well as the Nano if those features are on offer on the Apple player), then the Nano is a better choice for you. On the other hand if you want all the features the D2 offers, well the Nano is not your thing.

I may have referred to getting my 'greasy-haired nerd on with the D2' before and that is the sort of demographic the D2 will appeal most to: Geeks, nerds & gadget hounds. The Nano will appeal to people who want a very portable music player that just works. CNET may be staffed by geeks but I'm sure the tone of the reviews they'd want to project is to appeal to the technologically interested but non-nerd.

iPods are only popular because of the Apple stores and fancy commercials. People get iPods when they just want an MP3 player. For most people, iPods are the only MP3 players, so they think that they are the best. Common mistake that people make.

You can customize the Menu button to previous track, play/pause, or next track
In the 3.40b firmware you can customize the volume buttons too, but only for the hold mode.
I have it like this:
When player is not in hold mode volume buttons act as volume buttons mode as mode button, in hold mode, volume button are previous and next track and menu button is play/pause.

Just wanted to let everyone know that the Senior Editor at CNET James Kim died in December last year. I think he did most of the DAP reviews in the past at CNET. I believe he is Korean. I think the staff over at CNET is still feeling the loss. We really should give them a break.[sad]

03-04-2007, 22:09
Yeah I know that was sad. I saw quite a few reviews of his before he went missing, and even quite a few afterwards.

That said, CNET reviews are mostly totally crap. They don't go into any meaningful details and their pros and cons tend to be very very subjective, and they're not very knowledgeable. This last D2 one was awful.

Alot of people didn't know him personally but they did watch his reviews/shows etc. and they were very saddened by his death. What you just said is very ignorant. So you don't care that a person dies because you didn't know them? I didn't know the world revolves around you.[thumbdwn]
