Is it just me or is a dictionary the most pointless function ever on a dap?

It is NOT just you. I don't get it at all. It is a waste of space in my opinion. [thumbdwn]

Oh come on, it doesn't take up that much space. 'sides, it would be useful if you're gonna read e-books on it (ok, maybe u aren't, but i could see myself doing that)
Is there any chance that UK models have dmb capability hidden? it seems the dictionary is replacing the dmb capability at the moment, I mean come on, dmb just pwns dictionary for usefulness, even though I don't know much about dmb other than the fact it's huge in Korea...apparently there's trials goin on here in the UK....should I banish any hope of ever receiving dmb on my D2? haha :P
However...I've been struggling to think of what I'd rather have instead of the dictionary function if not the dmb....haha, ermm.... any ideas?
No D2 players that ship outside of Korea have a DMB antenna. So, even if you install firmware with DMB capability, there is no way you will be able to get a signal.
You would have to order a D2 straight out of korea to get DMB functionality.
At least, this is what I've gathered elsewhere in these forums. I may be wrong. [smile]
I thought as much, but I've seen photos of someone's dmb cowon d2 on the cowon forums, and there was no evidence of an antenna.....although I'd expect it would need one.
i would like to see Russian :/ so i could learn it more... i only know it a bit... i would think its a popular language? should be easy enough too?
i think the headphones are used as antenna... same as fm radio
btw how different is HD radio? could it be done with this player or would it need a whole new chip? i would think that since its just encoded but transmition is the same is it not? still on fm bands?
There must be always a receiver, the D2 has an FM receiver, and the DMB models have additional a DMB receiver.
But I think there are ways, to get receiver and plug them in the usb port for example, the player just needs to support that than in the Firmaware...
To go ON TOPIC again, I want to install the Dictionary, but FAILED...
I just copied the downloaded folder "POWERDIC" in the root folder, but it won't work, it says "FAILED TO LOAD FONT"...
Any Ideas how to fix that?
Edit: never mind, for some reason, it didn't copy all the files...

Keep in mind that Cowon's Dictionary feature was exclusively designed for Koreans, not for you or other people in the world. If you actually read the information, those dictionaries were made from Korean companies, not from other foreign companies.
And I don't know how it is in your country but in Korea, we are obsessed with learning English. We do whatever we can to improve ourselves, and if a DAP had a dictionary function, it would certainly save a space because 80% of Korean students carry electronic dictionaries separately.
Before labeling someone else's effort as 'pointless', it's a better idea to perceive the situation from that person's point of view first. You do know the following ENGLISH proverb, don't you? "Don't judge a man until you've walked in his boots"

Why have a dictionary? I say... Why not?
I tried the pronunciation feature. As far as I can see, it is only english pronunciation... I don't need that ;) more useful would be Korean pronunciation for me.. ;) so I will disable it, because it takes up almost 400 MB...
But the dictionary is fine, so in school I just say: "What? That's not an mp3 player, that's my translator ;)"
So thats a great excuse for me xD

Um...you stink?
Ok. Now that i got that bit of adolescence out of the way, I think that ANY added feature to our beloved D2 should be treated with appreciation and respect. Coming from an archos background, where we have to almost beg for new features, I think Cowon is atleast trying to look out for it's core users.
I am all for add-ons that promote productivity and personal advancement on the go. As a matter of fact, it would be even nicer if they also added these features:
1. A nice 'PDA' or Organizer feature that uses the touchscreen for phone numbers and calendar.
2. A neat little file browser that allows for copying, renaming, etc. for files.
3. PDF reader. (This might not be possible.)
4. Of course, some touch screen games. (take game ideas from the Nintendo DS.)
5. The 'Holy Bible' on the D2. (Hey, why lug the 'Big Book' to church? Use D2!)And, that's my 2 cents.
:jamming:
The things you mentioned are nice, but the bible???
I think that would cause problems, not everybody is Christian, I am, but I definitely don't need/want the bible on my D2...
Btw: You can post those things in the "what do you want to see in the firmware" forum

The Bible idea sounds awesome...but I'd only want it if it had mutiple versions of the Bible...
Sorry Yeeze...my favorite iaudiophiler..[biggrin]
actually, you could just type the bible, and safe as "bible.txt" and there you go ;)
Hmm... I tried to download the trial dictionary for symbia, but it does not seem to use those *.dat files...

This is true Yeeze..[smile] ..You wouldn't even need to type it...there are tons of Bible web sites where you can just copy and paste the entire Bible and there's lots of translations.[smile]
it's probably the cultural thing..being korean myself i kow these things...by adding dictionary functionality..it'll appeal more to the parents since it can aid their english study*cough*
