View Full Version : Can D2 play AVI or xvid without conversion?
Hi,
I have an A2 which is awesome because I never have to convert my downloaded video files. AVI and xvid files just play on A2 if I drag and drop the downloaded file.
I have been wanting a flash based PMP that is smaller/lighter than my A2, and D2 with and SD card sounds like a perfect device.
I have read a few reviews on D2, and all of them mentioned the AVI conversion using jetaudio. If I download a tv show in AVI format, does it need to be converted to D2 specific AVI format using jetaudio? or would it just play like it does on my A2?
Thanks in advance for the help!
i think its fine as long as its 320x240 res or around there... i havent really tested what happens with different sizes... all i know that if its not the right size it will not play... just black screen while in play more or it resets/crashes
The following is conditions of files that D2 can play.
AVI : MPEG4 ~ 2Mbps, 320x240, 30fps, MP3 audio
WMV : WMV9 ~ 768kbps, 320x240, 30fps, WMA audio
Unfortunately, almost every file you download from internet does not fulfill the conditions.
For example, the file '24.S06E11.HDTV.XviD-XOR.avi' that I've just downloaded has 608x336 of resolution, so it cannot be played with D2.
nah a lot of low quality stuff is at the 320 level, and ya i think it means max of 30fps... that might not even be true but you wouldnt even want to have more fps on a video clip O_o in fact i have a mov that i converted high quality that was 25fps and it works with 25fps at 320 as far as a nice converter try SUPER it seems to have everything, you can convert things that like say vdub cant read like mov to a high quality avi and then edit and recode it in vdub... although you could just get away with using super all the way seems nice and has more then enough options, just no custom bit rate? but rather in steps o_o
I've tried a few Anime episodes on my D2, and it wouldn't play - just a black screen as suggested above.
For some reason when I manually convert a video file using VirtualDub even at low video bitrate - it would chug on my D2, but with the JetAudio software - it would be fine. I've even replicated the JetAudio output settings in VirtualDub but it still comes out with jerky Video and unsynced audio. [confused]

I've got a couple of XVid podcasts to play, but with very dropped frames.
Pretty useless - just about everything seems to need conversion.

What profile did you use in the Xvid encoder when using VD?

Selecting profile in Xvid encoder doesn't mean much. It just disables some of the options.
You still have to set all the other options manually.
I'm using Clonemobile it uses OpenDivx to encode , I have not had any Problems playing, vids are Smooth and play file , I encode to 320x240 765kbps/128 Audio

Eh?
The profile selection has a major effect on the encoding results and the options that can then be tailored.
The reason for the question is that I was getting missed frames when using profiles other than handheld on xvid - almost like it was missing a field from my interlaced footage. This made it 12.5 fps in PAL land.
I got the same thing with divx although I haven't tested many profiles to see what I need to do to cure it.
So, there was a valid reason for the question[wink]

I think I was very clear. You still have to set all the options manually.
Try converting a movie clip using the handheld profile and then another profile. See if you get the same frame issue I had. In my case all selectable/greyed out options were the same but I still get a different result i.e. it seems there's more to what the profiles do than just the options you can select.
Would be good to see if it's just me and/or the issue is with interlaced footage.
PS I'm not arguing by the way - I just want to know more about what is going on and how I can get good quality videos without using Cowon's software.
