removing a screen protector that uses adhesives can easily damage touchscreens.
if you want a great screen protector that DOES NOT use adhesive, check out:

http://www.nushield.com/products.htm

they don't make one for the D2 yet, but if you put in a request (like me) and we get enough requests, they'll create one for it. i use one of these on my laptop and the screen is still in perfect shape.

you can find the request page here:

http://www.nushield.com/screen_solutions.htm

dimensions:
Diagonal Screen Size: 2.5 in.
Width of visible screen: 2.0625 in.
Length of visible screen: 1.5625 in.

head on over and let them know you want a protector that doesn't use adhesive!

ps they sell klearscreen and microfiber cloths too - imho the best lcd cleaner around

Yeah I want a D2 screen protector. Cowon New Zealand does offer screen protectors for the D2, but that's the only place I can find them (here (http://www.cowon.co.nz/store1.php?product=CW-D2-SCRN)).

great news - got an email response from nushield:

"Since there is some interest in this device, we will attempt to
develop a film size for it. Just so we are clear, you are telling us
that the visible screen size is 2 1/8 X 1 5/8". Is that correct?
If you are willing to work with us, we can send you films for
testing. Thanks."

Awesome company - this is the weekend.
Thanks to anyone that requested a screen protector!

So - will someone double-check my measurements?

I don't own one yet but remember it's ok for it to be just a shade smaller than a shade to big. Not only that it makes it a little easier to put on if it's a shade small. And the very edges of the screen never get touched anyway.

these films are a little different. because there is no adhesive, the edges are slipped under the plastic frame between the frame and the screen. check out the installation video:

http://www.nushield.com/images/nushield_insert1.mov

so the measurement needs to be exact. the film needs to be slightly larger than the screen. thats why they want to know the exact size of the visible screen.

so it's a 2.5" screen - (2.0625*2.0625) + (1.5625*1.5625) = 2.5*2.5

Anybody can verify the visible screen size for me?

i get 2 1/8" X 1 5/8"

yep - they have a sample coming to me in the mail - want me to try it out and let them know the deets on how well it fits, if it moves around during use, etc.
i will definitely respond to them right away and hopefully the first one is just right, then you can get them from their web site - i think its like 12$US for 3 films, but those three will last a lifetime - you just pull them out, clean them and replace. hopefully the test film will arrive today! what's really sweet is that the film is designed specifically for touch-screen devices - should be perfect for D2

I'm currently using the screen protector, that came with it, and I used sometimes my fingernails or other small thin things, and so damged the screen protector, aro those better protected or is it just not made to use fingernails or other thin things to push something?

yeeze - i guess you can ruin anything if ya wanted to, but from the film i have for my laptop, there isn't a scratch on it yet. it's not a touch-screen, but i'm sure there's been some junk over time that would have scratched the film. From their website:

Long lasting protection against dust, scratches and gouges.
Abrasion and chemical resistant to protect the LCD screen.
Highly transparent film provides added screen contrast and brilliant colors.
Patent pending technology requires no adhesive and prevents optical distortion that reduces clarity.
No adhesive means no air bubbles or sticky residue on your screen.
Super thin writing surface gives pleasant feel and excellent character recognition.
Installs easily in seconds, can be removed, cleaned and reinstalled for continued use.
Filters out 99% of UV light from reaching your screen or reflecting to your eyes.
Excellent value for the money; three films can last the lifetime of your device under normal use.

I have found from my use that they, in fact, do not hamper the look of the screen, and do diffuse some reflections, so that is a nice bonus because the D2 screen is kinda shiny to me (if i am back-lit, i can see my outline on the screen - kinda annoying)

The first film i got from them for my laptop didn't really work well (something about the chemical coating on my Panny lcd), so they sent me a new one for free - here is their guarantee:

If you are having any difficulty installing or using NuShield screen protectors, please Contact Us.

We will work with you resolve the problem. If we cannot fix the problem or you are still unhappy with the product or its performance, you can return your NuShields for a full refund including up to $5 of shipping costs.

Thanks a lot. I do think that it would match my 2.5" D2. However, I do not understand how it work.

The NuShield film rests on top of the screen. It is held in place by having "wings" designed into the shape that slide under the case at the sides as well as slipping under the case at the very top and bottom. This means that the film needs no adhesive and yet is held securely by the bits of film that are captured between the case and screen. The film "floats" on the surface and provides excellent scratch and abrasion resistance without possibly damaging your screen with adhesive.

since a touch screen is made up of many layers, i would imagine that when removing a protector that uses adhesive, you could separate one or more of the layers. You may want to contact them - they have a live chat, i got the information from their faq

"NuShield screen protectors use no adhesive that can cause bubbles or could even damage your screen if you removed them too vigorously"

anything is possible i suppose

You should also ask the makers of "Invisible Shield", to make one. They make really good shields that do not scratch at ALL! I have one for my psp that I have had for 1 year, but still no scratch! IT IS AMAZING!

That sounded a bit too strange, like a way to sell more or something. I mean, the adhesives on screen protectors isnt excatly like ducttape, sticky fingers would be just as bad

Sometimes the IS or BSE people will test the compatibilty of there skins for the players, so this may help aviod the 'I killed my players screen' dramas [yes] I would like to put a BSE on mine but not until I'm 100% sure it will not damage it when installed or removed.

If you want a quality screen protector, you really should get a Best Skins Ever.

their site is www.bestskinsever.com

They make the best, and cheapest screen protectors around. They are made from the EXACT same material as the protectors which you get from invisble shield at www.shieldzone.com/ . But, they are less than 1/3 the price, and they are usually cut more accurately, so they fit the device better. Plus, shipping is very cheap.

I have one on my Blackberry and my girlfriend has one on her Motorola RAZR. I know several people who have years-old iPods that are pristene because these shields work so well.

Here's a review of them, with a video of a guy trying to scratch the protector on a Zen Vision:M:
http://aphnetworks.com/reviews/best_skins_ever_zen_visionm_total_body_skin

They don't make a protector for the D2 specifically, but you can order a DIY kit from them.

will these skins (or any other for that matter) hinder the touchscreen performance in anyway? since i'm assuming that the screens are pressure activated?

personally, after looking around at some different protectors, this one really stood out to me. This page has a link to a bunch of reviews if you're interested. http://www.pdascreenprotectors.com/reviews.htm as can be expected, they don't have one for the D2 but i emailed them and got this reply

"the G3 uses no adhesives and stays on by tucking under the
bezel.

We need some information in order to cut and send you a test sample. You
will need a metric ruler, a piece of plastic film (like a photographic
negative) and 5 minutes of your of time.

Here's the information we need to determine the size:

- Width and Height of opening of screen area (edge to edge):
- Amount of tuck-under* of top edge:
- Amount of tuck-under* of left edge:
- Amount of tuck-under* of right edge:
- Amount of tuck-under* of bottom edge:

*Simply tuck the film under the edge and measure how much went in.

Once we have these measurements, we will be able to send you a sample."

I'll be doing this as soon as my D2 gets here this week. hopefully tommorow[yes]

I am using a BestSkinsEver protector on my D2 and I love it...doesn't hinder the performance of the touchscreen in any way...and I actually feel much more comfortable about using the stylus on it now ;). Also put some on the backside, don't want it to scratch until my Noreve case arrives. They don't have any precut for the D2 yet, so I just got a DIY sheet and cut it myself..works like a charm :)

so i finally got to take off the original protector and install the test film.
the one they sent was really easy to get in - except for the last side - so they will need to cut off 1/16 of the long edge.

this thing is awesome - film doesn't move at all, doesn't distort the image at all, and seems to repel grease like no tomorrow. i use my fingernail, stylus, and finger and there is not a scratch at all nor a fingerprint. yay!

i now have no fear at all of just dropping it in my pocket with my keys and change and running out the door

did notice one thing - y'know how if you tip the top of the d2 toward you, the image doesnt' go out of color for a while, but if you tip the top away from you, it goes out of color rather quickly? - well, it now takes longer to go out of color - i can tip it further now without losing the image - very impressive. also, it seems the contrast is actually better. the screen is just as glossy as it was, but the differences in shades of black seems a bit better, might just be me, but whatever - overall quality of the film is fantastic.

gonna email them right now and let them know that they need to trim the length a bit, and they should be ready to take orders very very soon.

btw - packaging was great - film is in a little zip lock and there is a protective backing on the side that goes against the screen of the D2. just grab it with a piece of tape and it comes right off. there was a thick piece of cardboard there too to prevent my lame newman-like mailman from bending the film. Also -the instructions are clear and easy to follow. just read them before you install and follow along

So if it doesn't use any adhesive, how does it stick to the screen? Doesn't it fall off if you shake the D2?

it is slightly more reflective in sunlight. without the film, i can't see a damn thing in direct sunlight anyway, but if i am in the shade on a brightly lit day, it is no different with the protector on.

no, it's not a static film. the film is pretty rigid. because all the edges are between the screen and the bezel, the film does not move at all - i tried to push it to slide it around, and it takes quite a bit of force. it's a little challenging to get it installed in that respect, once it's in, it doesn't move at all - you could shake it all day. In fact, you don't even know it is there - you see no edges, no indication that there is a protector on it.

all of the edges are under the bezel and that holds the film against the lcd.

They look very bad when applied to the screen, the screen is all hazy and it's impossible to apply without bubbles. Also, the package promises that it comes off clean. This is a lie! It leaves the whole screen full of glue residue. It's a nightmare, I just spent 10 minutes polishing with a microfibre cloth to get rid of it, the screen is clean now. That was a wasted 1/3 of €8. Seems the screen protector mentioned in this thread is a far better option. I also wonder about the quality of the Cowon screen protector for the D2 that's available in New Zealand...

does anyone know of a screen protector or case for D2 that would have some raised bumps or marks on it -- so you could feel where the "Play/Stop/Skip song" controls are -- by feel, when it is in your pocket?

I'm using D2 for mostly audio only -- and I'd love to find a screen cover like that. I've seen them for other mp3 players...

Hmmm. or maybe I could buy a pack of regular screen protectors and try to make my own bumps on it -- perhaps with liquid silicone, or something. yeah, i know -- I'll be careful.

I'll bet something like that would sell well -- a lot of people want something to help them control D2 in their pocket, when they want to.

The best would be a cover like that, that slips off easily for when you want to view the screen more.

Anyone know where to find something like this or ideas on how to make something like that?

When you install the NuShield protectors make sure you follow the instructions on the plastic bag and not the ones inside the folder.

NuShield gave me this reply by email.

"As mentioned, please ignore Step 1 of the instructions on the card and follow the Step 1 instructions on the paper label affixed to the film bag. We have some old cards that we are using up and they refer to an older style of film that we no longer use. Please feel free to post this information on the iaudiophile.net forum."

NuShield gave me this reply by email.

"As mentioned, please ignore Step 1 of the instructions on the card and follow the Step 1 instructions on the paper label affixed to the film bag. We have some old cards that we are using up and they refer to an older style of film that we no longer use. Please feel free to post this information on the iaudiophile.net forum."

thankx for the update Blackroom... really appreciate that dude...once again thankx[thumbsup]

I bought a custom shield from shieldzone.com was $15 with a lifetime warranty on it (they replace it any time without any hassle). It works really well for me and I use their products on every electronic device with a screen. I highly recommend them.

I currently have the NuShield protector, but I have the Shieldzone one coming in. I'm happy with the NuShield, but I was blown away by Shieldzone's video demos. So I'll use my NuShields until they're worn out, then I'll slap on the Shieldzone [laugh]

The shieldzone ones are really nice. I did the key test and seriously not a scratch! The only thing with them is that you can kind of see the texture of the skin on it when your screen is black (totally invisible once it's on) as long as you put it on right. I found from first had experience you really need to follow the directions to the letter and beware of pet hair! :-)
If you don't get it on there the first time perfectly, you can always take it off, rewet, and reapply. And if you tear it (somehow - I tried tearing the left over parts of the film from the cut out and fount it impossible!), you can always get it replaced for free. Some truly amazing material.

anyone use the wipes they try to package in with them? I picked up a 3pack since it was only $2, and mainly because I'm a sucker.

I'm guessing they're not reusable at all or anything, much like a handy-wipe...anyone know?

Hmm I got a spare official Hori Nintendo DS screen protector around for the touchscreen which is like 3 inches across. Do you think I could somehow chop this into the right dimensions? (you'll probably laugh but we got a big evil looking meat cleaver in the kitchen I think might be more than sharp enough to do the job, but I'm kind of hesitant to try in case I ruin the protector)

Unfortunately, the Shieldzone protectors aren't idiot-proof and I pretty much destroyed mine within 10 minutes of getting it in the mail (it being Friday the 13th I guess I'm lucky the D2 still works!). The warranty doesn't cover installation errors so that takes care of that. I put the Cowon temporary protector back on and will lick my wounds for a couple days before deciding on my next step.

I also destroyed the first InvisibleShield I got, so I ordered a second one and that one did not fit. It was to wide. I destroyed it trying to get it to slip under the bezel.

I emailed Shieldzone and they sent me a replacement and that one was defective. It had bumps that made it looked like a grapefruit skin and even had a scratch on one end.

I called Shieldzone and talked to Katrina C. She told me that it was from a defective batch and she sent me yet another replacement shield.

Just got it today and it fits great. They changed the design. Rounded the corners a little and made it a little smaller.

I had to send them the other two shields that did not fit/work, but they sent me a self-addressed stamped envelope.

Try calling them and maybe they will send you a replacement. I guess they have had a lot of complaints from D2 owners.

All-in-all, I am happy with my shield. I wrote them and told them I would even be happier if they sent me a full body shield for free to make-up for all my troubles.

I received my invisibleSHIELD about 10 days ago. I'd never installed one before so I was very cautious (and a little hesitant because of the liquid) during the install but it just wouldn't fit the D2 screen. After spraying it with the solution and applying it to the screen, I realized that it was too wide (by ~1.2mm) to fit without forcing it under the bezel. So I e-mailed them and, like you, I got a response from Katrina C. asking what the measurements of my shield were. I sent them to her and she responded by saying that they could only conclude that I must have "stretched the shield when I was removing it from the backing because their measurements are very precise". Then she went on to say that they'd send me a new shield (and I need to return the first shield in their postage paid envelope). I'm pretty sure that they know their original measurements were incorrect or some kind of manufacturing defect occured. Hopefully this new shield will fit better than the first one did. Unfortunately, I won't get to find out for several more days because this shield was also sent out via the free shipping method which somehow takes 2 days to go from Utah to New Jersey and then like another 10 days to reach me in Northern Virginia.
