I e-mailed Cowon's tech support a couple of questions yesterday. I wanted to make absolutely sure 4gb SD memory would work with the 2gb D2, since thats the only model I can get now in USA.

I emailed their tech support 2 questions. I'll just put the Q & A verbatim below.

Questions:

1. What is the maximum size memory card the 2GB D2 will work with?
Will the 2GB D2 work with a 4GB card, giving it a total of 6GB?

2. When is the 4GB D2 going to be avaible in USA?


Cowon's tech support answers:

1. Currently works with up to 2GB SD cards, next firmware update
should have support for greater capacity SD cards.

2. We've been told possibly April, no official ETA has been given.

What does everyone make of this? I've heard that many people are currently using the 2gb D2 with an additional 4gb SD memory. Are they just saying it will only work with 2gb SD as the official answer(thats what they will support), or something?

Also - yes -- note -- April for the 4gb in USA. I guess I made the right decision by not waiting to buy the 4gb. No way I would want to wait that long with no player -- its worth a few bucks just to get it in the mail already.

Incidentally, I checked all 8 or so websites that Cowon points to for buying their products in USA -- newegg.com, chiefvalue, amazon, etc -- they were all sold out of the D2, (if they ever carried it at all--I know newegg & chiefvalues have had it in the past).

So I went back to Jetmall to order it. But they were sold out too. I finally ended up being able to order a D2 from Jetmall -- in a bundle package with additional 2gb SD memory. $219 for that package -- not that great of a deal, but I was tired of waiting -- my iRiver died about a week ago, and its . . . been . . . really . .. diffikult, you know?

Its like cold turkey. My friends say my face is twitching involuntarily, and I don't realize it. I need sleep, or music, or something

We have not had a post here from any user saying a 4gb sd card does not work with music at least, one person had a problem with video but another with the same card didnt. (so maybe as you say its not official)

In hind site I should have waited for the 4gb as the battery life is halved using sd cards, (the battery life was my prime reason i wanted the d2), but 25 hours is still ok, but not bragging rights! We in Australian can get the 4gb one now so mines on the way, lucky I have a friend that wants my 2gb.

haha, you did the right thing by not waiting :) there are ppl here who are holding out for the 4gb version and, i feel bad for them.

there is a thread here with a list of 4GB SD cards that work!!! no worries.

keep in mind that support told me it'd be a few weeks before the D2 2gb came out. I got that message 3 days before it appeared on Jetmall.

I will totally hold out for the 4gb model. It's one thing if all of Earth had to wait for it, but America is about the only place left that doesn't have it (I think). Just to know it's available in other countries, but not in my native USA, I don't think it's right. I'd be in a bad mood everytime I played with my 2gb D2 knowing that there's no good reason why a 4gb model isn't for sale right now.

Also, April's only 2 months away. It seems like torture now, but by June, when most of us have had the 4gb D2 for a couple of months, these pre-4gb days will be a faint memory.

It's not much, but I have my U3 to watch videos on until then, so I will definitely wait.

And like Rockin Amigo14 mentions... the 4gb might appear sooner than later :)

When I talked to cowon about a month ago they told me at the end of February for the 4gb...
So I really expect to see it sooner than April....but no matter what I'll wait for the 4gb...I really should wait until the 4gb is avaliable on newegg...but that's "ATLEAST" 3 weeks or more away.

I originally wanted the 4GB player. Then I did the math: 4GB SD card, Noreve case, new headphones, protective screen film.... In addition to this, I have the i6 and still have over 1GBs of space left. Basically, 6GBs is working for me.

Yeah - thats kind of how I figured it also.

If I take that $25 that I save by buying the 2gb model vs the 4gb, and just put it toward a larger memory card, I will come out very close to the same.

I'm planning to use that 2gb D2 + the 2gb memory, and hold out with that until the support for 8gb+ cards comes out. As that happens, the difference between the 2gb vs the 4gb becomes more negligible (ie 2gb + 8gb = 10 gb; 4gb + 8gb = 12 gb total -- not a huge difference).

I've been living so long in that 1gb cramped closet of my iRiver -- heck 2 or 3 gb total will seem like Freedom Incarnate! (for at least a week or so...) :jamming:

meh waiting's not that bad, since I still have my ipod that I can use for music right now....it was hard to wait for it to even release in the first place (back in jan) when I found out about the existence of the D2, but the lust for it has died down a bit so I can live quite well without it =p.
